I stayed up for Jay this time.
When he came in, he studiously avoided my eyes while he unchained everything. I stumbled onto my feet, struggling to see in the light, as he quietly swapped out the lunch boxes and closed the door. I finally made it over to the door and gripped the bars. My voice wouldn't work. I touched his fingers with my fingertips, straining through the bars. I silently pleaded with my eyes but he only wrapped the chain around, padlocked it, turned around, and walked away.
