"You..."
Riesling was almost spitting blood due to Edmund's retort and couldn't utter a word.
The expression on Mrs. Conner and Arend's faces changed, realizing that they were the one who had orchestrated the opportunity for Milburn to take advantage of Merlot.
Edmund's accusation of their actions being inhumane was akin to a slap in their faces!
Cathan and Rose quickly understood what had happened the previous night, and they were enraged.
Indeed, Merlot didn't have much time left to live, but no ordinary parent would want their child to be demeaned before death.
They hadn't expected Mrs. Conner and Arend to stoop to such levels.
"Edmund, what do you think you are to lecture my sister? As a son-in-law who just married into our family, you're quite arrogant! You're nothing but someone hired by the Conner family to guard Merlot's tomb! You should remember your place!"
But Brentton, Riesling's brother, immediately jumped out and scolded Edmund.
"You're Brentton, right? Both you and Riesling should call me brother-in-law, don't forget your manners."
Edmund looked at Arend and said indifferently, "Uncle, the Conner family is considered a prominent household. Brentton and Riesling spewing nonsense. Are these the manners you've taught your children? If the child is not taught, it's the father's fault."
His words seemed to freeze the air.
Because he had thrown back at Arend the insults Riesling had hurled at his in-laws, turning it into a direct confrontation.
A son-in-law being this assertive was rare!
The atmosphere in the hall instantly became extremely tense!
Merlot's face turned pale instantly.
Cathan and Rose had not expected Edmund to start a conflict with Arend, Brentton, and Riesling right upon his arrival, even directly targeting Mrs. Conner.
Although Edmund's words were satisfying for them, they had offended everyone present.
"Edmund, stop showing off your eloquence here. You, a person the Conner family pulled out of prison, dare to talk to me about manners?"
Arend spoke with a gloomy expression, "Keep spouting nonsense, and the Conner family will no longer cover your sister's medical expenses. You were the one who spoiled our plan last night, and Milburn is very angry. The only way to make amends is for Merlot to apologize to Milburn at the Phantom Group. Otherwise, you'll suffer the consequences too!"
"You still remember that Merlot is your niece, huh? In this world, is there such an uncle who only talks about interests and has no familial affection? Don't tarnish the word 'uncle'! It seems that Brentton and Riesling's flattery is inherited from you!"
Edmund took out his phone, sent a few messages, and coldly laughed, "Milburn bullying my wife, and I'm supposed to just watch? If I did that, would I still be human?"
"Milburn has to pay for his actions last night, and I will take care of my sister's illness myself. I don't care for your charity of medical expenses!"
"As for pulling me out of prison, I'll repay that favor today. But if anyone else helps outsiders to bully my wife and my in-laws again, don't blame me for being ruthless."
Arend and Mrs. Conner's faces turned even darker.
"Stop talking nonsense." Merlot quickly tried to stop Edmund as he became more unrestrained.
But in her heart, she felt a hint of warmth because at least Edmund cared about her, unlike her grandmother and uncle who were heartless and only thought of using her.
Cathan and Rose also signaled to Edmund.
Although Mrs. Conner had no affection for them, they dared not completely break with the Conner family, as the old lady was a formidable figure with many means to deal with them.
They were no longer hot-blooded youths anymore. For some matters, they could only endure.
"Edmund, you're quite bold." After Mrs. Conner's imposing gaze lingered on Edmund for a long time, she finally spoke.
Her authoritative gaze swept over Edmund and then turned to Merlot, "The Conner family's decline is all because you brought bad luck to us. What's the harm in spending a night with Milburn for someone about to die?"
"Dignity means nothing in front of the family's rise and fall. If you don't apologize and secure the contract for the Conner family from the material supplier, I will completely blockade your mother's small pharmaceutical company, leaving you no place in Heavenhill City."
Upon hearing Mrs. Conner's words, Merlot's legs gave way, and she almost fell to the ground.
Fortunately, Edmund quickly supported her.
Mrs. Conner and her uncle, Arend, treated her this way. She should sever ties with them. After all, she was a dying person and had nothing to fear.
But what about her parents?
She was a filial daughter and did not want her parents to have no space to live after her death.
Cathan and Rose were also pale.
"Mom, do you really want to be so ruthless towards us?" Cathan finally spoke, his voice trembling as he asked Mrs. Conner.
"Cathan, it's not that mom is heartless. The interests of the family come above everything. The Conner family and Conner Corporation cannot fall. Therefore, Merlot has to make some sacrifices. The Conner family has raised Merlot for twenty-three years, it cannot be for nothing."
Mrs. Conner said coldly, "Now, you go back and persuade Merlot properly. Mr. Milburn said that today Merlot must go to the Phantom Group alone to find him. There's still room for negotiation. Otherwise, Mr. Milburn will also deal with you. As for Edmund, you also need to manage him. Don't let him cause any trouble."
Cathan sighed, unable to say anything.
He was ready to leave with Merlot. He was the eldest son of the Conner family, but he had completely lost hope in this family.
"It's ridiculous, truly ridiculous. I've seen many shameless people in prison, but none are as shameless as you. However, Mr. Milburn is nothing great. With one phone call, he has to come and apologize to my wife for last night's incident!"
But Edmund had no intention of leaving just yet.
"I told you to shut up. What are you freaking out about? Hurry up and go." Merlot became more anxious, pulling Edmund to leave.
Merlot, Cathan, and Rose all regretted bringing Edmund to the Conner estate. It was simply wrong.
This guy had no filter, offending everyone he spoke to, causing trouble, and boasting.
"Don't rush to leave!"
Brentton immediately stopped Edmund and Merlot, saying, "Edmund, you really know how to boast. How about we make a bet? If you can get Mr. Milburn to come and apologize to Merlot, I'll kowtow to you ten times. But if you can't do it, I'm sorry, both you and Merlot must follow my grandmother's arrangements."
"Mr. Milburn coming to apologize? I think he's delusional," Riesling also mocked.
These two, previously offended by Edmund to the point of nearly vomiting blood, seized the opportunity to fight back.
"Are you siblings sure you want to bet with me?"
Edmund looked at Brentton and Riesling, indifferently saying, "Just don't refuse to kowtow when it's time, after I've slapped your faces. Don't blame me for being merciless!"
"With someone like you, do you think you can slap our faces? You really think too highly of yourself," Riesling said disdainfully.
"Let's make it quick if we're going to bet. We can't always be waiting. You have at most half an hour," Brentton coldly huffed, still very cautious.
Edmund took out his phone and made a call, simply saying, "You must arrive within ten minutes!"
"Edmund, you still put on a good show, but after half an hour, you'll be exposed," Arend also thought Edmund was just putting on an act.
"Fine, but within this half hour, I'd appreciate it if all of you helping tyrants to do evil would keep quiet." Edmund sat down in the living room, found a chair and sat down.
Before making this call, he had already sent a text message to Mr. Milburn. Mr. Milburn, not wanting to appear weak, not being fired from the Phantom Group by Portia, and not wanting to go to jail, was already on his way and about to arrive.
"Cathan, the three of you, don't leave either. Sit down and wait."
Mrs. Conner coldly spoke, "Let's all see, with Edmund's big talk, how capable he really is."
Cathan, Rose, and Merlot, of course, wanted to leave, but at this point, with Mrs. Conner speaking, they had no other choice but to sit down and wait, anxious.
If they tried to forcefully take Edmund away now, and Mrs. Conner became angry, their days would become unbearable.
"Mrs. Conner, Mr. Milburn has arrived..." But in less than five minutes, a servant of the Conner family quickly entered the living room and reported directly to Mrs. Conner.
"Mr. Milburn came so quickly, he must be here to cause trouble. You and Merlot are in for it," Arend, after a moment of shock, looked at Edmund and huffed coldly.
Not just Arend, everyone thought that Mr. Milburn's arrival was not for an apology but to cause trouble.
Merlot, Cathan, and Rose all turned pale, looking as if disaster was imminent.
"Uncle, you're so sure without even seeing Mr. Milburn? Are you a worm in his stomach?" Edmund replied with a calm smile.
"Edmund, you're still saying such things to my father now, wait and see how you die," Brentton glared at Edmund.
"Please, let Mr. Milburn in!" Mrs. Conner immediately ordered the servant.
In less than a minute, Mr. Milburn, led by a servant of the Conner family, arrived in the living room.
