"Mr. Richard has arrived, please, have a seat. Edmund is utterly clueless and loves to spout nonsense. Please, don't take it to heart."
Mrs. Conner saw Mr. Richard and quickly stood up.
"Young man, you are quite the sharp-tongued individual, aren't you? But how could you mock someone like me?"
Mr. Richard sat down on an armchair, glanced at Edmund with a chill in his eyes, and snorted coldly, "When I say someone will die at midnight, they won't last until dawn. The fate of the Conner family still relies on me for a dragon vein, securing a sacred resting site for your wife. This, in turn, ensure her spirit is elevated after seven days of rituals. Otherwise, the Conner family's fortunes cannot be changed, and your wife will only become a lonely ghost, unable to transcend eternally."
"To change the Conner family's fortunes, you need to do more good deeds."
Edmund laughed, "Old Taoist, as the saying goes, it takes three years to find the dragon and a decade to locate its vein. You may not have the ability to find such a geomancy treasure. I've said my wife will not die, so even the King of Hell wouldn't dare to take her."
"Young man, you're truly arrogant."
Mr. Richard's face turned angry, "If Merlot does not die within seven days, I will jump into the grave pit I have chosen for myself. But your reckless blabbering could lead to divine punishment and sudden death. If you die, being buried together with your wife would make it easier for the Conner family's fortune to change. It seems, by then, we might need to dig two graves."
"Old Taoist, your curse is useless on me. Only those who do evil will face divine punishment. In seven days, we'll see who belongs in the so-called geomancy burial site you found!"
With a cold laugh, Edmund grabbed Merlot's hand and walked outside.
"Young man, no one in Heavenhill City has ever dared to speak to me like this. You will regret it."
Mr. Richard waved his dust brush, his anger carrying a hint of killing intent.
But Edmund couldn't care less about this old Taoist, leaving the Conner family mansion with Merlot, Cathan, and Rose.
He and the old Taoist would settle their account in a few days!
...
"What exactly happened today? How did Milburn suddenly listen to you? He was so arrogant last night, without any restraint." Back in the car, Merlot couldn't help but ask Edmund.
Cathan and Rose also looked towards Edmund, eager to know the answer. After all, the sudden turnaround was unbelievable.
"In prison, I learned some medical skills. After Milburn left last night, I went to the hospital to pick up my sister. By chance, I encountered the sudden illness of Portia, the owner of the Phantom Group. I saved her life. She knew Milburn was up to no good. To thank me for saving her life, she helped me."
Edmund said, "Your grandmother and uncle are people who prioritize benefits over family ties, showing no affection. We should keep our distance. I can make the Phantom Group cancel the cooperation with the Conner Corporation at any time. They probably won't trouble us anymore."
His words were a mix of truth and lies. If he told the complete truth, claiming he had received the Flaming Inheritance, opened his heavenly eye overnight, and became a master of both medicine and martial arts, no one would believe it.
"I didn't expect you to be so considerate for Merlot and us. Edmund, it seems you are a good person. Alas, it's a pity. What Merlot has is not an illness’ it's her fate. Otherwise, you two could live a good life, having children. Both your father-in-law and I would have been happy."
After a long silence, Rose wiped away a tear.
Cathan also sighed.
They believed Edmund's words, as they had thoroughly investigated his background. If it weren't for the chance of saving the owner of the Phantom Group, they doubted he could have resolved today's issue.
"Don't worry, Merlot will be fine. I will find a way to cure her," Edmund thoughtfully said.
He knew that his in-laws originally looked down on him, but after the recent events, they had accepted him. It seemed not all families disregarded their sons-in-law.
Moreover, his in-laws were clear-headed people who had decided to break away from the Conner family.
He felt fortunate to have a wife like Merlot and such reasonable in-laws.
But his words were met with no response from Cathan and Rose, and the car fell silent, enveloped in a faint sense of sorrow.
He understood that his parents-in-law felt that Merlot's days were numbered. As parents, their hearts were filled with sorrow. They did not believe him when he said he could cure Merlot.
...
As soon as Edmund, Merlot, Cathan, and Rose returned to the villa, they discovered a Mercedes GLS parked at the entrance.
They had just gotten out of the car when the doors of the Mercedes opened, and an elderly man in short-sleeved traditional Chinese attire with youthful-looking white hair and a woman in her mid-twenties with long hair draped over her shoulders stepped out.
The woman was strikingly attractive, standing at a height of 175 cm, with skin as smooth as jade and eyes as clear as autumn moons. Her beauty was almost on par with Merlot's, but her temperament was vastly different.
Her figure was exquisite, with curves in all the right places, and a waist that could be encircled with a single hand.
However, her face always carried a cold expression, like the eternal snow on a mountain peak, creating a stark contrast with her fiery figure and adding to her allure, making men feel an urge to conquer her.
Merlot only spoke coldly to Edmund when he attempted to make a move on her, normally she was very pure and charming. But this woman seemed to be cold all the time.
Upon seeing the elderly man, Cathan was visibly excited.
He immediately went up to greet him’ "Dr. Jensen, Uncle Jensen, you've finally arrived. I've been trying to contact you for a long time without success."
The elderly man in traditional attire stroked his white goatee and said with emotion’ "Cathan, twenty years ago, your father and I arranged a marriage between Merlot and my grandson, Emerion. Upon hearing that Merlot was gravely ill, Emerion insisted that I come to Heavenhill City to see her. If he wasn't currently training in the Mount Kinefall and unable to leave, he would have come with me."
"Uncle Jensen, this must be Miss Jensen, right? I didn't expect you to remember the marriage arrangement from all those years ago. Please, come inside for some tea. With you and Miss Jensen here, there's hope for Merlot's illness."
Cathan became even more excited and, along with Rose, welcomed Dr. Jensen and Miss Jensen into their home.
Dr. Jensen was no ordinary person’ reputed to be a descendant of the legendary physician Perry Jensen, his medical skills were said to be unparalleled, earning him the title of "Saint of Medicine."
And Miss Jensen, his granddaughter, had inherited his medical expertise. Despite her young age, she was renowned for her medical skills and was known as the "Jade Lady of Medicine" for her beauty.
"What's this? My wife has a marriage arrangement with someone else?" Edmund was stunned and then became angry.
The Conner family had such arrangements?
Could marriage arrangements be issued like that?
Once everyone was in the living room, Cathan and Rose warmly invited Dr. Jensen and Miss Jensen to sit and served them the best tea.
"Sister-in-law, you truly are breathtaking. My brother, Emerion somehow got hold of your picture and was smitten at first sight. He keeps saying that once he completes his training and descends from the Mount Kinefall, he intends to marry you." Miss Jensen was observing Merlot all the while. She took a sip of tea and said.
Even her face, usually as cold as a thousand-year-old glacier, showed a smile.
She and Dr. Jensen were full of confidence, seemingly believing that there was no illness they couldn't cure.
"Miss Jensen, who are you calling sister-in-law?"
Edmund couldn't hold back any longer and coldly snorted at Miss Jensen, "First, your grandfather mentioned a marriage arrangement, which I already found intolerable. Merlot and I were married yesterday, so please stop bringing up those outdated topics."
"You must be Edmund, the lucky guy who got out of prison early. I know about this. However, you should be very clear why you were able to marry Merlot, right?"
But Miss Jensen contemptuously said, "I could tell at a glance that Merlot is still pure, so you and Merlot aren't truly husband and wife. Merlot, with her beauty, is only suited for a peerless hero, not someone like you. Once my grandfather and I cure her illness, you can get lost. You're not even worthy to carry shoes for Emerion, who is a disciple of Kinefall. Of course, the Jensen family can compensate you with a sum of money, an amount you could never earn in your lifetime."
"But I'm not interested in your money. Merlot and I are already married, so Emerion's supposed marriage contract can only become a piece of waste paper."
Edmund scoffed, "Of course, if Emerion disagrees, he's welcome to come find me!"
