Monica had once warned herself not to be weak anymore, not to shed another tear for this man. Yet, at this moment, she couldn't hold back.
These six years had been unbearably hard for her, and all of that suffering was caused by the man before her.
Without looking at Ethan again, Monica turned and resolutely walked toward the door. As she stepped out, she reached up to wipe the tears from her cheeks.
Surprise appeared on Ethan's face, but it quickly faded.
In that instant, he realized that something must have happened over these six years to change Monica's personality so much. But now wasn't the time to ask about it.
Quinn froze, slightly stunned by Monica's unusual behavior.
The famous "Ice Queen" of Westford had never even shown interest in a man before. And yet, here she was, visibly shaken because of an unremarkable-looking man—it was almost eerie.
Ethan, who had been sitting, suddenly stood up and strode after Monica. The cold handcuffs fell to the floor, abandoned.
He quickly caught up with Monica, and Quinn, brimming with curiosity, didn't try to stop him. Even if she'd had the chance, she wasn't sure if she had the ability or courage to stop this man.
Though Ethan's Nascent Soul was damaged, he could still stop Monica with ease. But he didn't. Instead, he followed closely behind and called out, "Monica, I can explain."
"Explain?" Monica suddenly stopped, turning around to stare at him with icily. She scoffed, "There's nothing more for us to say after you left me."
Just as Ethan was about to speak, Quinn caught up with them, holding the broken handcuffs. She nodded to Monica. "Ms. Lyson, if you wish to leave with him, you may post bail for him."
Though she said this, Quinn's curious gaze kept flicking between them, clearly intrigued by their story.
Monica, having regained her usual cold composure, seemed to realize she shouldn't have lost control in front of others. Without looking at Ethan again, she nodded slightly at Quinn. "Yes, Officer Zorn, please inform my assistant to handle it."
Clearly, Monica wanted Quinn gone. But Quinn's curiosity was ablaze, and she snapped her fingers, signaling a young officer who'd been watching from a nearby office to run the errand.
Though the young officer looked reluctant, he didn't dare disobey Quinn and quickly ran off.
Monica managed to suppress her anger, but she no longer acknowledged Ethan. This man had hurt her too deeply. She turned and headed toward the main entrance.
Ethan knew there was a misunderstanding between them but didn't know how to explain it. He could only smile bitterly and follow Monica outside.
His bail hadn't been processed yet, and leaving now seemed a bit improper. But no one dared to offend Monica as she came from a powerful family background.
Besides, Ethan had taken down nine vicious robbers in an instant all while being alone, so he wasn't someone they could afford to offend. Since even Quinn had no objections, naturally, the other officers didn't dare interfere.
Quinn was unable to follow them as the two walked out of the police station. She narrowed her eyes, musing, "Who exactly is this man? Why did he give me such an overwhelming sense of pressure and fear? His records are entirely ordinary, nothing remarkable. He'd been missing for six years, without a trace, and now, out of nowhere, he reappeared."
In this information age, it was nearly impossible to remain hidden in a city for so long.
And what was the connection between Monica—who'd always looked down on even the most exceptional men—and this unremarkable-looking man?
Quinn furrowed her brow, thinking, "Ethan, I won't forget you. I'll get to the bottom of this."
By the time they stepped out of the station, the sun was setting.
Walking in the dusk, Monica kept her head down. The more she thought about it, the angrier and hurt she felt.
When she reached her red Cayenne parked outside, she abruptly stopped, turned around, and looked at Ethan.
Ethan paused, intending to speak. "Monica…"
Somehow, a bank card appeared between Monica's fingers. She held it with a trembling hand and said coldly, "Here's a million. The PIN is six zeros. From now on, I hope you never appear in front of me again."
As she spoke, it felt like a knife was twisting in her heart, almost making it hard to breathe. No matter how much she hated him, buried memories of the good times lingered in the back of her mind. Her heart was breaking as she offered this bank card and said those words to Ethan.
He hadn't expected this from her. Was her hatred due to his silent departure years ago?
The man felt conflicted. He was hardly the most expressive person and always struggled with saying the right words in matters of the heart.
Seeing him stand there motionless, Monica bit her lip, threw the bank card at his feet, and stumbled away.
Money?
A bitter smile tugged at Ethan's lips.
Would Lord Stellar, ruler of the Northon Starfield, even care about money?
As someone who once commanded absolute respect and wielded supreme power, why would he have any concern for money?
Ethan almost wanted to laugh bitterly at the irony—after all the hardship he endured to return to this planet he missed, their reunion had turned out this terribly.
But he couldn't laugh. All he could muster was a pained smile.
As Monica reached her car, Ethan reached out and grabbed her wrist.
At that moment, a figure shot toward him from the side.
Without even looking, Ethan waved a hand, sending the figure flying back.
That figure was none other than Anya, Monica's assistant.
Anya forced herself to endure the pain in her leg and glared at Ethan, her mind in turmoil.
The man in front of her, with his plain looks and ordinary clothes, would easily blend into a crowd. Yet, he radiated a sense of danger—unseen but so powerful it was suffocating.
Anya had never felt this level of fear in her life before.
Though Ethan appeared as an unremarkable young man, to her, he seemed like a monstrous force of nature. Even without knowing his background, she had the distinct impression that if he moved his fingers, he could destroy her instantly.
