Encountering the fierce light in Zane's gaze made Kate feel as if she were being hunted by a mythical beast. It sent a chill down her spine, prompting her to hide behind Bristol.
After all, the once-famous prodigy of the Khidal Empire was threatening her. Though his legacy was a thing of the past, it still intimidated her.
However, she quickly reminded herself, "He's powerless now. Why should I be afraid of him?"
Bristol was visibly upset. She gripped the sword in her hand, which emitted a blue glow and radiated strong spiritual energy, making it hard for her to let go.
"Zane, how can you be so shameless? You want to take back what you gave me? You promised to love me for a lifetime! You said you'd never let me be sad and never let me suffer even a little! Look at you now!" Bristol exclaimed, filled with indignation.
She was reluctant to return the gifts Zane had given her, especially the Frozen Saber, which was crucial for her upcoming academy tournament in half a month. It was her only way to enter the Holy Land, and she couldn't do it without the help of this weapon.
A Heaven-Level weapon was something even the big shots in the Misthaven Realm would covet.
"Heh..." Zane let out a cold chuckle. "Didn't you say you wanted nothing to do with me? Those things are mine, marked with the Casson family emblem."
Zane's eyes narrowed, his voice cold. "I'm not joking or negotiating! If you don't return them, your Greaves family will become mortal enemies with the Casson family."
The words caused an uproar among the onlookers. Everyone looked at Zane in shock.
"Oh my god, is this the same Casson family heir who was afraid to raise his voice at Bristol a year ago?"
"Tsk tsk, Casson is quite domineering now. Let's see if the Greaves family dares to go against the Casson family."
"The Greaves family isn't worthy of that. The Casson family is a first-class family with the power to back it up!"
"Still, if they're breaking off the engagement, returning the gifts is reasonable, right? Didn't expect Bristol to want everything without giving anything in return. How dare she?"
Bristol's expression grew even more somber amidst the mocking words of those around her. Her eyes flickered with fear, and her hand holding the saber turned slightly pale.
"Heh, Zane, you're just a powerless man now, and you can barely protect yourself! Do you think you can still be the Casson family heir? What a joke!" Bristol laughed, having torn down all pretense.
In her view, Zane, who had no cultivation, would definitely be stripped of his heir position by his family. Moreover, countless clan members would openly and secretly try to harm him.
After all, in Grester, and even in the entire Khidal Empire, the struggle for family heirship was a common occurrence.
"The words of the young master are the attitude of the Casson family!" At this moment, a cold voice suddenly arrived, causing Bristol to shudder.
Everyone turned toward the source of the voice, seeing a tall, imposing middle-aged man striding forward, followed by dozens of excited young men.
They approached Zane, bowing respectfully.
"Greetings, Mr. Zane."
"Greetings, Mr. Zane!"
The booming voices and the fervent faces were genuine, stirring the crowd with their intensity.
The surrounding onlookers retreated, their faces filled with astonishment.
Zane smiled slightly, looking at the newcomer, and greeted him respectfully, "Greetings, Mr. Roman."
The man was none other than Roman Casson, one of the nine elders of the Casson family.
"Hahaha, Zane, you're finally back! That's great. I knew you wouldn't die so easily!" Roman declared, waving his fists in excitement. "By the way, where the hell have you been for the past year? What happened?"
Zane chuckled. "Mr. Roman, it's a long story. We'll talk about it later."
"Hahaha. Sure!" Roman exclaimed, then turned his sharp gaze towards the pale-faced Bristol. "Bristol, if you're breaking off the engagement with Zane, you must return all the treasures he gave you. That's what I say. Do you disagree?"
Roman's aura was terrifying, and his piercing gaze made Bristol stagger, her face drained of color.
"Hmph, a dignified elder of the Casson family and a Misthaven Realm powerhouse bullying a young woman?" At this moment, another middle-aged woman strode forward with an air of hostility.
"Ms. Lashbrook!" Seeing the woman, Bristol seemed to find her backbone and immediately stepped forward, greeting her respectfully.
"Mom." Kate also approached. The pressure from Roman on her body suddenly lessened.
The newcomer was Yaretzi Lashbrook, Kate's mother and Bristol's master.
Seeing her, Roman snorted disdainfully. "No wonder Bristol has the gall to want everything without giving anything in return! You've clearly taught her well. Tsk tsk. What an eye-opener for me!"
"Watch your mouth!" Yaretzi glared at Roman, her face filled with anger.
"Get lost; this has nothing to do with you!" Roman retorted bluntly, turning his gaze back to Bristol. Menance filled his eyes. "Will you return Mr. Zane's things or not? If you insist on keeping them, I'll head back immediately and bring the entire Casson family to declare war on your Greaves family!"
These words were like a thunderclap, leaving everyone present in a daze, their minds buzzing for a long time.
Zane's threats might not have carried much weight, but Roman was a force to be reckoned with.
"My god. As expected of Roman from the Casson family. What a fiery temper."
"Tsk tsk, his explosive temper and bloodthirstiness are well-known! Even the king has to give him some leeway."
"Who would have thought the number one beauty of the Khidal Empire would be so shameless? She wanted to break off the engagement, yet unwilling to return the gifts given for marriage."
"Yes, she may be beautiful, but she's quite manipulative."
"That's right. She now despises Zane for losing his cultivation, probably wanting to attach herself to some Holy Land heir. But she can't bear to part with the gifts Zane gave her. Tsk tsk... what's her mindset? So off-putting!"
The crowd murmured and pointed, their words piercing, making Bristol wish she could find a hole to crawl into.
The turn of events had taken her by surprise.
If it were a year ago, Zane would have begged her not to leave, continuously giving gifts to win her favor. Who would've thought he would become a changed man now?
"Hmph, I knew no man is any good. They're all damn fickle! He said such sweet things back then, and now he's like this!" Bristol thought indignantly as a pitiful and helpless look appeared on her face. Tears also welled up in her eyes.
But instead of evoking sympathy, her demeanor drew more ridicule from those around her.
"My god. Did you see that? She's acting aggrieved."
"Wow, she looks pitiful enough to evoke compassion, but her previous ruthless attitude makes me sick to think about!"
"Damn, she's so pretentious, acting like Zane bullied her."
"Exactly, Zane said they could break off the engagement if she returned all the treasures. How simple is that?"
"Maybe she wants the treasures and reputation."
The words of those around her pierced like needles, making Bristol wish she could disappear into the ground. Gritting her teeth, she had no choice but to throw the Frozen Saber to Zane.
