At 3 AM in a small hotel next to Coton train station. Peter Zorn pushed open the door, ready to finally get some rest.
The room cost him 5 dollars per night. The environment was average, but this could be considered a luxury single room compared to a ten-person cell.
After all, he had been out of prison for several days now, visiting the families of his former cellmates and assisting them. Although he gained a lot from these visits, his energy was nearly completely depleted.
However, as he lay down, a series of urgent knocks echoed at the door. Peter frowned and reluctantly got up to open it.
"Good evening, boss. It's a long night. You weren't planning to sleep alone, were you? How about I arrange some fun for you?"
Peter looked puzzled, not quite understanding what was being offered. "Fun?"
As soon as Peter voiced his confusion, the other person chuckled. "For a little cash, you can save a beauty. There are mature women and youthful students. Wouldn't you like to do a good deed?"
Anyone with experience would give this guy a thumbs up. He was definitely a marketing genius. But for someone like Peter, who had just been released and was still confused, it was all a bit perplexing.
"Uh? Well... bring one, then!"
"Alright!" the person exclaimed excitedly, "What price range do you want?"
"Price range?"
"Forget it, I don't understand even if you explain. Just give me the most expensive one." Peter didn't bother to think it over, simply opting for the priciest option.
"Alright, I'll arrange the 180-dollar package for you immediately!"
After sending the person away, Peter walked to the window. It faced the large sign of the train station. The red letters spelling Coton were quite prominent.
Five years ago, his ex-girlfriend was harassed by the company boss. In a fit of rage, he confronted the boss and beat him up. But the boss was not to be trifled with and hired goons to deal with him. He had no choice but to leave, hoping to lay low for a while.
After leaving his hometown and moving to a strange city, he called his ex-girlfriend, informed her of his location, and assured her of his safety. To his shock, she betrayed him by giving his address to the boss. Ultimately, the boss sent people to find him, intending to break his legs. Fortunately, a passerby called the police. Although he kept his legs intact, he was sentenced to five years for mutual assault.
Today was his third day out of prison.
During those five years, every time he thought of his ex-girlfriend's feigned pitiful face, he felt a wave of nausea. As his mentor used to say, the best way to forget that ugly face was to fill the void with other women.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The sudden knocking at the door interrupted Peter's thoughts.
"Coming!" He sighed, turning to the door and unlocking it.
"Come in!"
The door opened, and a graceful woman stepped inside. She closed the door behind her and, as she turned, asked, "Do you want a massage first or a bath? I..."
"Massage? Bath?"
In that instant, Peter finally understood what was happening. But what surprised him the most was that, although the room lights were off, the light from the train station's large sign was enough for them to see each other clearly.
Peter, hearing the familiar voice, looked at her in disbelief. The woman was tall, wearing a tight purple dress, with a good figure and graceful demeanor. He realized her exquisite face looked familiar upon closer inspection.
"Whoa, it's you," Peter exclaimed instinctively.
The woman was none other than Mila Moore, the wife of his childhood friend. Five years ago, Peter had been the best man at their wedding. After the incident, he lost contact with his family. He never imagined their reunion under such circumstances, with such intentions.
"You... Are you Peter?" Mila asked, regaining her senses. Though she hadn't met Peter often, she had some impression of him.
Peter smiled awkwardly and said, "Yes, it's me!"
"By the way, how come you're here? Where's Owen?"
Owen Zorn was a few months older than Peter. They grew up together, sharing a deep bond. Owen had bought a truck and was doing transport work. He was supposedly leading a decent life. Yet, now Mila had ended in this line of work.
"Owen..." Mila sighed. "Two years ago, Owen had an accident on the highway. The driver fled, and Owen's truck was destroyed, leaving his legs disabled. I've taken him to many hospitals in these years, but they couldn't find the cause. His legs often hurt inexplicably, sometimes unbearably."
"So I have to keep him hospitalized for care. At least when the pain is unbearable, doctors can administer painkillers. But... hospital stays and special medication aren't covered by insurance, costing two to three thousand a month."
"I've sold everything we could. Recently, seeing him in such agony, with hospital fees unpaid and unable to use medication, I was left with no choice but to..."
Before she could finish, tears welled up in Mila's eyes and trickled down her cheeks.
Peter gritted his teeth and forced a smile. "Well, isn't it a coincidence?"
"Mila, I haven't contacted you guys these years because I've been learning medical skills from an old divine healer in a remote valley. I can definitely cure Owen's legs!" Peter didn't mention his imprisonment, simply fabricating a story.
Mila nodded with a smile, wiping her tears away, "No matter what, seeing you will surely make him happy!"
Peter smiled.
The atmosphere grew more awkward. They sat on the edge of the bed, unsure of what to say.
Mila seemed to remember something, hurriedly taking out a QR code from her purse.
Blushing with embarrassment, she said, "Peter, could you... could you scan and pay first? The people who brought me said guests need to pay upfront, or they'd think something happened and... and they'd barge in!"
"Sure," Peter agreed without hesitation. He took out his phone and transferred 180 dollars.
Once the bill was settled, Mila seemed even more awkward. The red light from the train station shone in, and the atmosphere took on an awkwardly intimate vibe.
"Do you... want to take a shower first? After all, you've paid, so I... I have to stay here tonight!" As she spoke, Mila lifted her head, her face flushed. It was hard to tell whether it was from her shyness or the lighting. Her cheeks, rosy and enticing, added to the moment's allure.
