Half an hour after Walter left, the site was cordoned off by the police.
Several forensic experts were meticulously collecting evidence, while a rookie officer crouched on the ground, vomiting.
The scene was ablaze with flashing lights.
A motorcycle sped to the frontline of the cordon and came to a stop.
A woman in leather jumped off the bike, her graceful silhouette striking against the chaos. As she removed her helmet, her face emerged cold yet stunning.
Her long hair cascaded down like a black waterfall, releasing a faint fragrance.
There was a mix of aloofness in her brows, and her eyes sparkled with intelligence.
"Edna, you're finally here. It seems the Blade Demon has struck again. The scene is horrific. Thirty-seven people are dead, and none of the bodies are intact," a detective greeted Edna Thompson.
"That's a lot of bodies. Looks like a gang war gone wrong."
"These bastards! Find out who they are, and I'll take them down!"
Edna remarked, glancing disdainfully at the vomiting rookie.
She lifted the cordon to enter the scene.
"Edna, you'd better not look at it, I'm afraid that..."
One of the officers kindly offered a reminder.
"Oh, you think I can't handle it?" Edna retorted.
"Do you think I'm fresh out of the academy and haven't seen bloody scenes?"
She strode inside the crime scene.
Seconds later, Edna bent over and started puking.
"Edna, have some water," an officer chuckled, trying to suppress his laughter.
"Dammit, this psycho! The killer is brutal. I'll catch this monster and make him pay!"
Edna declared, glaring at the officer before gulping down some water.
"Edna, there's a discovery. The car's dashcam has some clues. There was a shootout here half an hour ago, with a suspicious figure."
As someone called out, everyone gathered around.
Due to the angle, only audio was captured.
After the screams and pleas faded, a lone figure in mourning clothes appeared on the dashcam and disappeared into the dusk.
Everyone gasped in disbelief.
"A single person killed thirty-seven people?"
"How is this possible?"
"A monster?"
Even Edna was left speechless, her shock mirroring that of her colleagues.
...
Meanwhile, at the Greenhill Hospital, Walter hurried into the hospital's emergency room.
The corridor was packed with people.
Many patients were lying in the hallway due to a lack of beds.
The cold draft was slightly chilling.
Walter rushed to the room where he'd admitted Freya, only to find her sitting in a wheelchair against the wall.
She held an IV bottle in one hand while receiving an injection with the other, trying to avoid the passing crowd.
She looked timid, not wanting to trouble anyone. Holding the IV for so long made her arm tremble with fatigue.
Seeing this, Walter's eyes filled with tears.
During his three years in prison, he'd endured countless hardships without shedding a tear.
"If our parents knew, they'd be heartbroken. What a useless brother I am, letting Freya suffer like this."
Walter lamented.
He walked over, took the IV bottle, and Freya turned to him, her tense face breaking into a smile.
"Walter, you're back. You must be tired. How about we rest on the bench outside?"
Her maturity was heart-wrenching. She was only eighteen.
"It's my fault for letting you suffer. I'll find you a room to rest in," Walter said, gently shaking his head and touching Freya's nose.
"No need, Walter. The ward is too expensive, costing twenty dollars a night. This place is fine."
"Besides, I'm okay now."
"Can we go home?" Freya pleaded.
Walter choked up, unable to speak.
Freya grabbed his wrist, blinking her eyes "Walter, take me home, please."
Walter couldn't refuse.
He nodded, smiling. "Alright, I'll take you home."
After completing the paperwork, they headed outside. The sky had darkened.
Just as he was about to hail a cab, a red BMW X5 sped up and stopped before them.
The window rolled down, revealing the face of a woman, Lisa.
She even switched to another luxury car.
"I finally found you. Lost your nerve, huh? I waited for you at the hotel all day, and you didn't show up!"
Lisa taunted, flicking her hair.
"I don't have time for you. Leave me alone!"
Walter replied, turning away with Freya.
"Walter, who's that pretty lady? Do you know her?"
Freya asked curiously, peeking back frequently, only to have Walter gently pat her, making her stick out her tongue playfully.
"Adult matters, don't pry."
Walter said, his face showed a fondness that softened his stern words.
The car followed slowly, keeping pace with them. Lisa leaned out, waving.
"Get in, I'll give you a lift."
"It's hard to get a cab here, and it's inconvenient for you to walk."
"Is that your sister? You might be willing to suffer, but why let her suffer too?"
Lisa's keen eyes and high emotional intelligence zeroed in on Walter's vulnerability. Her words made him stop.
He picked up Freya as Lisa opened the car door.
Half an hour later, the car navigated through several alleys and stopped at the entrance to Walter's home.
Walter settled Freya inside before stepping out.
"Get in, we need to talk."
Lisa said, opening the door. Walter hesitated briefly but then got in.
"If you want the dragon pendant, you can leave," Walter said coolly once inside.
"So, you've decided to oppose me, Walter? Do you even know what that pendant means?"
Lisa asked, lighting a cigarette, her demeanor turning serious.
"Of course, it has meaning. It's a sacred token from my master."
"You can only take it by killing me," Walter replied, his eyes cold and determined.
"It seems I misunderstood. You don't know what that jade pendant represents. Your master is quite capable, making you the future son-in-law of the Lyson family."
"If he hadn't saved Mr. Lyson, the dragon pendant wouldn't have ended up with you. Don't think you can marry into the Lyson family even if you keep the pendant."
"Irene is the heir of the Lyson family and the CEO of Sovereign World Corporation, a leading enterprise. You're not worthy to marry her!"
Lisa declared, flicking her cigarette away.
