The news of Jane's awakening quickly spread among the elite circles of Jenos City. Many former suitors rushed to visit her, only to be sent away by Cecelia, who declared that her daughter was already married and advised them to stop bothering her.
During this period, Jane repeatedly asked for a divorce, but Cecelia scolded her harshly each time. With no other options, Jane turned to Terry.
"Terry, you're a decent man with responsibility, but we're just not compatible," she said after investigating him further. Despite his somewhat meek nature, she found him to be of good character.
If she were just an ordinary heiress, marrying someone like him wouldn't be a bad match. But given her special status, she was destined not to be with a regular person like him. Forcing them together would not only be loveless but could also harm him.
It was a harsh truth, but still the truth.
Terry nodded. "Divorce, huh? As long as Mom's on board, I'm okay with it."
Jane was frustrated. "You've seen my mom's attitude. Let's put divorce on hold for now. I called you here to tell you that from now on, we're only married in name."
"Once I've convinced my mom, we'll get divorced immediately."
"In the meantime, let's not interfere in each other's lives. You can date other women, but my only request is that you don't bring them home."
"I know this might sound a bit..."
"Sure," Terry agreed immediately, thinking it was quite a lucky break. He had been worried about what to do if he came across more with a special constitution.
Cecelia had been kind to him, and finding other women seemed disloyal. But now, with Jane's offer, any future issues would be no concern of his.
Jane was surprised by how quickly he agreed. Wasn't he worried about her seeing someone else?
She knew men could hardly tolerate infidelity, even in a nominal marriage. "Is it my lack of charm, or is he just spineless?" she wondered, recalling Terry's background.
She concluded it was the latter.
Terry was a bastard son who had taken the fall for his brother and been sold off by his family without resistance. If that wasn't spineless, what was? Her disappointment grew; clearly, such a man wasn't part of her world.
As Terry descended the stairs, Silas met him with displeasure. "A grown man hanging around the house all day? Don't you think you should be earning a living? Or do you expect the Jackman family to support you forever?"
"Silas, did you have a bad morning? What money are you talking about? Is our family lacking funds?" Cecelia retorted loudly, then turned to Terry. "Ignore him."
Terry smiled. "Mom, Dad's got a point. I should be working to support the family."
Cecelia quickly changed her tune. "Yes, that's my ambitious son-in-law."
"Let me think. What vacancies are there in the company?" She pondered, and then Silas suggested, "Isn't there some debt that needs collecting? Why not let the kid give it a shot?"
Cecelia immediately disagreed. The debtors were tough nuts to crack, and Terry, a young man, would struggle with them.
Silas nonchalantly replied, "This kid's done time; maybe he can handle it."
Before Cecelia could argue, Terry interjected, "Mom, Dad is right. Let me give it a shot."
Silas supported him, "See? The kid agreed. Don't crush his confidence."
"Go ahead, Terry. I'll have the list of debts sent to you shortly."
Terry nodded and headed for the door. Cecelia called after him, "Terry, don't push yourself too hard. Just do your best."
"Got it, Mom."
As Terry stepped outside, his phone rang. He ignored the call, but it rang again soon after. With a stern expression, he answered, "What is it?"
Harley's voice came through, "Terry, I heard Jane is awake. Could you ask her if I could meet with her?"
On the other end, Harley was filled with regret. Had he known Jane would recover, he would never have sent Terry. He would have chosen his second son instead.
Jane wasn't just from a prestigious family; she was young and accomplished, and most importantly, she hadn't been disfigured. The woman was the jewel of the Jackman family.
A daughter-in-law like her was a rare find, and aligning with the Jackman family would ensure his elder son's future in the Yale family.
Ever since that incident years ago, Pierce had been displeased with the main branch and had been grooming the second branch.
Upon learning of Jane's recovery, Harley immediately wanted to visit but hesitated, knowing he had looked down on them by sending Terry, the illegitimate son. So, he decided to have Terry test the waters.
Terry almost laughed in disbelief at the request. Did they really have the audacity to ask for his help? It was the epitome of shamelessness.
"I don't have time for this. Don't call me again. I'm done with the Yale family," Terry said, hanging up immediately.
Harley was furious. "Damn it, how dare that ingrate hang up on me?"
Molly added fuel to the fire. "Ha, he thinks he's got the Jackman family backing him. That's why."
"He wouldn't dare," Harley fumed.
Theo scoffed. "He's just a live-in son-in-law. The Jackman family would never take him seriously. He's just a conceited ex-convict."
Harley tried calling again, but Terry declined. After several attempts, Terry blocked his number entirely. "
That ungrateful wretch blocked me!" Harley's face turned an angry shade of blue.
Isaac grew anxious. "Dad, what now? Our cooperation with the Jackman family is crucial for my future."
Harley was at a loss. He had no idea what to do.
Molly's eyes gleamed sinisterly. "I remember that little bastard had a close friend from school. We could use her as leverage. That sentimental fool will surely cave."
The three men's eyes lit up. Theo said, "Dad, I'll take care of it right away."
Harley nodded. "Make sure it's discreet. We don't want any trouble."
