"Mrs. Lopez, could you let my mom stay here for a few days? As soon as she finds a new place, she'll move out immediately," Idris Langston pleaded, bowing his head to the middle-aged woman before him.
The middle-aged woman sneered at Idris. "This is my house, not ours! The Barker family may not be the richest in Longburg, but we have some reputation here. How could we just let an old hag stay under our roof?"
"My mom is not an old hag!" Idris said through gritted teeth, struggling to hold back his anger. "Mrs. Lopez, my parents helped you back in the day..."
"Shut up!" Vanessa Lopez exploded and slapped Idris hard across the face.
Slap!
A bright red handprint appeared on Idris's face, showing how hard Vanessa had hit him.
Vanessa hated it most when anyone mentioned how she'd benefited from Idris's parents back then. Idris's cluelessness just made her angrier.
"If it weren't for Melanie refusing to kick you out, would you still live here? I will never let that disgusting old hag dirty my house!" Vanessa yelled. "Get out! Get out right now!"
Idris clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned white, barely holding himself back from punching Vanessa in the face.
At that moment, Idris's phone rang. "Idris, hurry over! The landlord threw all my stuff out onto the street."
"Mom, I'm coming right now!" Idris's anger disappeared as soon as he heard his mother's voice. He jumped on his electric scooter and raced over to her place.
As he rode, memories from the past flashed through Idris's mind.
Before Idris turned six, he had a happy life. His family was wealthy and one of the top families in Longburg because his father was the second son of the Langston family, which had roots in Yolham.
They moved to Longburg because it was easy to access the sea. Idris's grandfather wanted his father to set up a branch of the Langston family in Longburg to help expand the family business overseas.
But then disaster struck. Rumors said Idris's father had worked with foreigners to steal the Langston family relic, which angered his grandfather so much that he died on the spot. After that, Idris's family was kicked out of the Langston family.
Idris's family went from living in paradise to hell overnight.
To make things even worse, Idris's father went overseas to clear his name and regain the family relic. But he never came back, and no one ever saw him again.
Idris's mother was also from a big family in Yolham. Her family told her to return and get remarried, but only if she abandoned Idris.
She refused to abandon her six-year-old son and cut off all ties with her family.
Idris and his mother depended on each other, and his mother raised him by collecting trash.
If it hadn't been for his mother getting seriously ill and needing a kidney transplant, Idris would've found a regular job and taken care of her as she got older.
However, they needed 50,000, so Idris had no choice but to swallow his pride and ask the Barker family for help.
He and Melanie Barker, the Barker family's second daughter, had been engaged since they were kids. He knew the Barker family never planned to approve the marriage, so he asked for 50,000 dollars to call off the engagement.
