After Alice decided on what to buy for Adam, she parked her silver Maserati outside Goldor Mall, one of Jorwick's most famous shopping centers. She was ready to take Adam from shop to shop until she found exactly what she wanted.
Even though it wasn't a holiday or even the weekend, the entrance to the mall was packed with people and luxury cars. Groups of fashionable, sexy women brushed past, their high heels making all kinds of clicking sounds on the floor.
Adam, who was totally new to Jorwick, couldn't help but wonder if every pretty girl in the city had shown up here.
There were a few guys around, but it was obvious the women outnumbered the men. You couldn't help but feel bad for the guys. Most of them were probably out working their butts off so their wives or girlfriends could go on shopping sprees, while the women just enjoyed spending like there was no tomorrow.
There were also some successful-looking middle-aged men with young, attractive women on their arms, which really made you wonder what was going on there.
"Stay close, or you'll get lost," Alice said, annoyed, noticing Adam's eyes glued to all the pretty girls.
"If you're so worried about me getting lost, why don't you just hold my hand?" Adam said with a grin.
Alice shot him a look and walked straight into the mall, totally ignoring him. No way was she holding hands with Adam in public. That'd be way too embarrassing.
"I knew you'd say no." Adam shrugged, not caring about the stares from a few guys, and just followed after Alice.
A girl pulling up in a Maserati and a guy dressed like a laborer walking through the fanciest mall in Jorwick were definitely a cause for staring.
Most guys hate shopping. It was tiring, and all the price-checking and bargaining women do makes it worse. After a while, it just becomes something one wants to avoid.
But shopping with Alice wasn't so bad for Adam. He didn't have to pick anything out, and he didn't even have to pay for it.
But Goldor Mall was huge, and Adam quickly lost his sense of direction. If Alice weren't leading the way and stopping to wait for him now and then, he'd probably get totally lost in this crowd that smelled like a hundred different perfumes.
"Hurry up, we're almost there," Alice said, pointing to a fancy-looking clothing store up ahead.
"Goodwill Boutique?" Adam nodded to himself and said, "Yeah, this place looks like it's made for me. Let's check it out."
Alice stopped in her tracks, listening to Adam mutter to himself, and suddenly realized this guy was pretty full of himself.
Adam didn't want to stand out too much. His time as a mercenary taught him to stay low-key. Dressing flashy in a fight just made you a sniper's first target. But here in the city, it felt like the flashier you dressed, the cooler you seemed.
As soon as they walked in, a pretty salesgirl in a black uniform came right over to greet them.
"Welcome! Feel free to look around," she said with a bright smile.
Adam was following Alice, but suddenly stopped dead in his tracks.
"What are you gawking at? Get in here already," Alice snapped.
"I'm coming," Adam said, tearing his eyes away and quickening his pace.
Honestly, Adam wasn't a perv-he just figured, if there's something nice to look at, why not enjoy it? Just appreciating, that's all-no funny business. Plus, being kind of an innocent guy, he got flustered pretty easily around pretty girls.
"Miss, what kind of clothes are you looking to get for your boyfriend?" the salesgirl asked.
"Find a cool, casual outfit for that country bumpkin behind me," Alice said, pointing at Adam, who just stood there looking clueless.
"Of course," the salesgirl said, sizing Adam up. "For him, I'd recommend our new 'I'm a Hunk' collection- super trendy, shows off a guy's style, but it is a little expensive."
She added that last part after checking out Adam's rough outfit. She clearly doubted he could actually afford the clothes.
"Don't worry about the price. Just let him try it on," Alice said, crossing her legs, which still looked amazing even without stockings.
"I'll try it." Adam nodded.
The jeans were a light blue, seemingly ordinary at first glance. But the longer one looked, the more exquisite they appeared-subtly luxurious, with distressed casualness, soft fabric, and sanded wrinkles that made them extremely form-fitting. The craftsmanship was superb, with meticulous cutting.
Years on the battlefield had given Adam a well-defined physique. When he emerged wearing the jeans, the salesgirls' eyes lit up, and one even gasped.
"Miss, your boyfriend has an amazing figure. Those muscles, combined with that scar, give him a bad-boy appeal," the salesgirl attending Alice praised enviously.
"He's not my boyfriend. Should I introduce you to him to quench your lonely heart?" Alice snapped, irritated at the idea of this bumpkin being mistaken for her boyfriend.
"Really? Can you introduce us? I'd be grateful," the salesgirl eagerly asked.
"He's not my friend," Alice replied.
"Whatever he is to you, just introduce us," the salesgirl implored, clearly captivated by Adam.
Alice watched the salesgirls surrounding Adam, feeling an inexplicable emotion. A bumpkin in new clothes might be handsome, but he was still a bumpkin.
"Sir, these jeans suit you perfectly," the salesgirl said, fastening the button on Adam's waistband, admiring him. "If you pair them with this black vest, it'll accentuate your physique even more."
The salesgirl picked up a black vest from a hanger, emblazoned with "I'm a Hunk." Normally, she'd toss the clothes to customers to try on, but with a handsome guy like Adam, she insisted on helping him herself.
The black vest highlighted Adam's arm and shoulder muscles, though his tattered shoes were now an eyesore.
"So handsome."
"I think so too," Adam agreed, pleased with the outfit. "How much?"
"Sir, we're having a promotion. This new outfit is 1,000 Solen after the discount."
"What discount?"
"Five percent off."
"That's barely a discount."
"That's the owner's decision."
"Should we take this?" Adam asked Alice.
"Yes, this one." Alice appreciated the rugged charm the outfit gave Adam. She was used to seeing too many delicate-looking men, and Adam's masculine appeal was refreshing.
"Alright, sir, will that be cash or card?" the salesgirl asked.
"Ask her." Adam pointed to Alice.
"Card," Alice said, taking out a credit card from her purse and handing it to the salesgirl.
"Ah, a kept man," the salesgirl thought, losing interest in Adam. Men usually paid when shopping with women, and seeing Alice pay, she assumed Adam was financially dependent on her.
Adam was unfazed by others' perceptions. He wasn't a kept man; Alice insisted on buying him clothes to prove he was a bumpkin. He was innocent.
After the transaction, Adam, wearing his new outfit, followed Alice out.
Just then, a young man in a white shirt, with a refined air, walked in with a beautiful woman on his arm. Seeing Alice and Adam, they both looked surprised and asked, "Isn't this our campus belle? How come you're shopping with a man today?"
"Because I want to," Alice replied with a frown, showing apparent disdain toward the man.
Adam, following her, noticed how quickly her mood shifted. It seemed this couple had some history with her.
"Ha, what a rare sight. I thought the famous beauty of Jorwick University was an untouchable goddess. Who knew she'd have a secret fling with a handsome guy?" the young man in the white shirt sneered, casting a contemptuous glance at Adam.
"He's my butler, so please stop talking nonsense," Alice replied impatiently.
"Butler? More like the one managing you, huh? With all those muscles, this handsome guy must have left you begging for mercy," said the sultry woman next to him with a wicked smile, noticing her boyfriend's burning gaze on Alice.
Seeing this provocatively dressed woman—wearing a sheer silk T-shirt that revealed her black bra and a miniskirt barely covering anything—Adam swallowed hard. "No way I'm marrying someone who dresses like that. That's not a wife, that's a time bomb... I'd probably be cheated on pretty quickly."
"I don't understand what you're saying," Alice glanced at the girl, refraining from retorting due to the man's presence. She pulled Adam's hand, intending to leave.
"I thought Alice, the so-called innocent beauty of Jorwick University, always acting like she's above everyone, refusing to talk to guys, would be the real deal. Instead, she is more desperate than everyone else. Look at that guy's tight, muscular butt—bet he's a beast in bed. Tsk, turns out our campus belle is just a thirsty little minx."
The girl said sharply, snuggling against the man in the white shirt while glaring at Alice's retreating figure.
