Bang!
In a split second, just as the blond thug was about to hit Elena, Pierce's eyes flashed blood-red. He quickly raised his leg and kicked the thug hard in the chest.
The nearly two-hundred-pound thug was sent flying and crashed hard in the yard.
Pierce's eyes went red with rage, and he was filled with a killing intent.
"Pierce, don't fight! Did you forget what happened three years ago?"
Elena desperately hugged Pierce as she begged him.
Pierce stopped in his tracks, slowly unclenching his fists.
He couldn't stand to see his mother heartbroken over him again. His broken family needed him to hold things together.
First things first, he needed to figure out what happened.
Where had Estella Lewis been these past three years? Why hadn't his mom mentioned her at all?
"Damn, kid, you've got guts to hit me!"
The blond thug, helped up by his guys, spat out blood, grimacing in pain as his stomach churned and his blood boiled.
"Go back and tell Mr. Nino that I'll pay back every penny I owe him," Pierce said coldly, his gaze sharp as a knife.
"But whatever's owed to me and my family, I'm taking back down to the last cent!"
"Alright, tough guy, you just wait!" the blond thug spat before jumping into the van parked outside.
"Mom, so much has happened these past three years. Did Estella ever come by to visit? Did she ever help us out?" Pierce blurted out as soon as the thugs left.
Estella and Pierce started dating back in school and were close.
When they were interning at the hospital, Pierce went to jail for defending Estella.
Plus, Estella's family was loaded.
Her parents ran a medical equipment business.
So why didn't she help out?
"Pierce, Estella's not right for you," Elena said, looking away, her voice uncertain.
"Mom, what happened with Estella?" Pierce pressed, sensing something was off.
"Even if we're broke, Dad's a great doctor. Everyone knows it. Why would we need to borrow from loan sharks to pay for Dallas's treatment?"
"The clinic's been gone for a while."
Seeing she couldn't hide it anymore, Elena finally admitted.
"What? The clinic's gone? Why?" Pierce was stunned.
Jackson Clinic had been in the family for generations. How could it just be gone?
"Estella took it."
"Estella? Why?"
Pierce's eyes went wide in disbelief. He shook his head.
"About a month after you went to prison, Estella showed up, saying she was pregnant with your child and demanding child support."
Elena explained, "Your dad saw Estella was pregnant. Since you two had been together for years, he sold the clinic and gave her the money. We owed her, since you're going to prison."
"Pregnant?"
Pierce's brows shot up. A surge of energy ran through him, and he clenched his fists without thinking.
He wanted to kill. He wanted to confront Estella.
Ever since they started dating, Pierce had never crossed the line. It was always just holding hands and kissing.
He'd never had sex with Estella, so how could she be pregnant?
This could only mean she cheated on him.
"Yeah." Elena sighed.
"A year later, your dad and I went to see the baby, but we were told Estella had a miscarriage."
"Mrs. Elena, are you home?"
A bright voice called out, and as Pierce turned, he saw a familiar figure in a green dress dart into the yard.
"Nancy, I'm inside, come in!" Elena recognized the voice and quickly invited her in.
"Nancy Green?"
"Pierce? You're out?" Nancy gasped, staring at Pierce for a long moment, covering her mouth in shock.
"Yeah, I'm out. And you're..." Pierce nodded. He knew Nancy.
They'd been classmates all through high school and college.
After graduation, Nancy went to work at a different hospital. He hadn't expected her to show up at his house.
"Pierce, you really should thank Nancy," Elena said, handing her a glass of water.
"These past three years, it's Nancy who's kept us afloat. Thanks to her connections at the hospital, Dallas's medical bills were a lot less."
"Thank you."
For the first time in a while, Pierce felt a little warmth inside.
He never thought Nancy would help his family.
Back in school, the two of them were always competing for first place.
"It's nothing, it's the least I could do," Nancy said, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, her cheeks turning pink.
Her loose green dress made her look even younger, but it couldn't hide her curves.
Her oval face had two little dimples, and her smile was bright and genuine.
Plop!
But Nancy didn't notice. When she raised her hand, an invitation fell to the floor.
Pierce bent down to pick it up, and as he opened it, a familiar photo stared back at him.
"Pierce, I..."
Nancy tried to grab it back, but Pierce's face darkened with anger.
On the invitation was a woman with a big smile, snuggled up in a man's arms.
The woman was Estella, his girlfriend, and the man was that scumbag Fernando Turner, the guy Pierce had beaten up three years ago.
"They're getting married?" Pierce growled, his voice hoarse with anger.
Pierce had wasted five years in prison.
These last three years, Estella had exploited the Jackson family. She was to blame for their misery.
"Pierce, don't be upset. Estella doesn't deserve you," Elena sighed when she saw the invitation.
"When you went to prison, your dad and I heard some rumors. A year ago, he saw Estella getting into a guy's car at the market. They looked pretty close."
"Mom, I'm fine." Pierce forced a smile.
"I'm not upset because of her. I hate myself for being so blind back then and making you and Dad worry. I made you both suffer. I'm such a lousy son."
"But don't worry. I'm back now. I'll work hard and take care of the family. I'll make sure you and Dad have a good life." Pierce promised.
"It's good you're back. Everyone makes mistakes. I know you'll get back on your feet," Nancy reassured him.
She'd come by after hearing someone had barged into the Jackson house, hoping she could help.
Seeing Pierce was back, she didn't stay long. She exchanged numbers with him and left.
"Nancy's a good kid. We've been lucky to have her help all these years," Elena said, watching Nancy leave.
"Mom, you rest here. I need to go out for a bit," Pierce said, feeling the need to blow off some steam.
"It's almost lunchtime. Where are you going? Eat before you go."
"Nah, I'm gonna go look for a job first." Pierce lied.
With his skills, he didn't need a job.
He had to figure out why Estella lied to him and why she was marrying Fernando.
He also needed to settle the score with Nino.
