Jordan Sowden had just gotten out of prison, clueless about everything that had happened outside. The only person he could trust was his sister, Elina Sowden. He hoped she'd tell him everything, leaving nothing out.
Elina replied, "Jordan, it wasn't murder-it was just a terrible accident."
"It was New Year's Eve, a year ago. Our family was having dinner together when a huge fire broke out out of nowhere. The fire was so intense that no one made it out-except me, since I hadn't gotten home yet."
"Please, don't dwell on it too much. Try to move on."
As she spoke, tears streamed down Elina's face. She pressed a key into Jordan's hand, sobbing so hard she couldn't even speak.
"Stay at the hotel tonight. Tomorrow, I'll take you to visit them and pay your respects."
But Jordan didn't buy it. There's no way an accident could wipe out his whole family. He still had a million questions, but Elina couldn't go on. She wiped at her eyes, full of grief, and hurried off.
That night, Jordan didn't stay at the hotel. Instead, he went back to their old home, Sowden Manor. The place looked nothing like it used to-it was all fenced in with barbed wire and steel mesh, with a big "No Trespassing!" sign out front.
Inside, weeds had taken over-it looked even worse than a deserted field, just a pile of ruins now. His grandpa used to say, "This place is roomy, quiet, and has great vibes-perfect for kids to play and for family get-togethers." That's why the Sowden family lived way out in the suburbs instead of the busy city. The house sat on over a thousand square meters, built in a classic Chinese style with red tiles and green eaves-elegant, comfortable, and full of life. Out front, there was a big yard with a rock garden and smooth, open lawns.
The family used to have parties here all the time-barbecues, talking late into the night, just having a good time together. Jordan and Elina used to chase each other around, play soccer, and fly kites here. Now, all of that was gone.
When he looked up, all he saw was emptiness and ruin. Not caring about the barbed wire, Jordan climbed right in. He walked over to where the house used to be. There were still scorched bricks and burned rubble everywhere-a real fire had torn through this place.
But for a fire to bring down brick walls? No way that was just an accident. No fire could do that by itself!
Nineteen people-a whole big, happy family-gone, just like that. The night wind howled, but Jordan's eyes burned with pain as he pictured the fire starting, his family panicking, everyone trying to escape. But there was no way out-someone had set this up-locking the doors, windows, even sealing the balcony!
All nineteen of them died in total despair and pain, burned alive. Before they died, they must've been screaming, "Why? Why are you doing this to us?"
Ahhh!
Jordan suddenly screamed up at the sky. His blood was boiling, and his anger was out of control!
His family died so horribly, so unfairly, right in the middle of a holiday dinner. They were murdered-no doubt about it!
But why? Why would Elina lie to him? She had to be scared of something, or just didn't want him to know the truth!
In a corner, he spotted a bunch of makeshift graves, with a wooden sign scrawled in blood: "Sowden Family Grave."
Grandpa, Alina Hiorns, his uncles and aunts, his parents, cousins-nineteen family members in all-were gone. Their bodies were burned to nothing in the fire-there wasn't even anything left to bury.
Elina was the only one left, so she did the only thing she could-she buried them as best she could, even if it was rushed. Her heart must have been shattered. Underneath everyone's names, she'd even written her own, pressing a bloody fingerprint below it-as if she was telling her family, "Even if it kills me, I'll get revenge for you!"
But why hide it from Jordan? She must've wanted to take revenge all on her own!
She was hoping he'd marry Arianna Showyer and become part of the Showyer family, so he'd be far away from the Sowden family's trouble and pain. She wanted to take all of this on herself!
"Sis, you're still the same as ever!"
"When are you going to stop trying to protect me?"
"I'm not your little brother anymore, you know!"
"I've grown up now!"
Jordan's eyes filled with tears. He couldn't help but pour out his heart to the sky.
When they were kids and trouble came up, she'd always step in front of him, saying, "Get behind me-I'll protect you!" But in the end, it was always Jordan who fought the bullies off, and she was the one who got beat up.
"Sis, stop acting tough. I'm grown up now-I'm strong enough!"
"Back in Sinos Prison, even the scariest inmates were afraid of me. They called me the 'Big Bad'!"
"Now I can protect myself-and I can protect you, too!"
"All the Sowden family stuff, all our grudges-leave them to me!"
Jordan's brow furrowed with anger, and he stared off into space. Suddenly, a powerful energy seemed to radiate from him, filling the whole place with tension. It was like even the heavens were shaking.
All at once, the air turned freezing cold, and time itself seemed to stand still!
He was Jordan Sowden. He was a man-a Sowden man.
This was his fight-his to finish!
No matter who did it, no matter how strong they were-blood for blood!
"Sis, you're exhausted. You don't have to do this alone anymore!"
"From now on, let me handle it. I'll take care of you!"
Suddenly, there was a roar of machinery-bright construction lights lit up the whole place!
"Ha! I knew that punk would show up here-I knew it!"
A voice snarled out, full of spite.
A huge road roller came barreling straight at him.
"I knew the first thing you'd do after getting out of prison was come here! I called it!"
"But you don't know-this land doesn't belong to the Sowdens anymore. It's ours now, the Halenkamp's! You set foot here without my say-so, you're asking to die!"
"Now, I'll use this construction site to finish you off!"
Jordan recognized the voice-it was Darren Halenkamp, the guy he'd just seen at the Grand Dynasty Hotel.
Judging by his tone, the Halenkamps really did own this land now.
That barbed wire and fencing? Of course, it was his doing.
Jordan's eyes blazed with anger. Now he finally got why Alina Hiorns's Jados Ring had ended up with him.
"Hmph, if I don't kill you today, I'm not a man!"
"You worthless piece of trash-how dare you steal my Jados Ring and even cut off my finger!"
Darren was practically foaming at the mouth, yelling like crazy.
He was the Halenkamp family's golden boy, worth millions, and yet he'd lost to Jordan.
The humiliation was too much to take-he hated Jordan's guts!
That's why he was here now-out for revenge!
He figured it out fast-the Sowden estate was his now. Jordan was bound to come walking right into his trap.
But he never thought it would happen this soon!
"I'm gonna flatten you and send you to join your dead family!"
Darren shouted like a madman, and the huge ten-ton roller came straight at Jordan, ready to crush him!
