Billy gave me a nod. "I'll head back, then. Wouldn't want to get in the way while you see the patient." He lumbered out the door. The way his hulking frame moved was almost comical.
"Billy, I'll see you again!" Oaklyn called after him, her voice so coy it set a man's mind wandering. It was obvious enough. I had no proof, but I was pretty sure I was right.
I hadn't expected Billy to be cheating on Melissa. Even with his mojo running low, he was still out looking to fool around.
With a beauty like Melissa at home and still chasing after Oaklyn, Billy was a greedy man.
Oaklyn beamed and pointed at the grain sacks strewn around the room. "Gideon, Billy really is a good man!"
She mentioned Billy again, trying to cover her tracks. I played along. "Billy might not be clever, but he's a good man, that's true."
"Angie's in bed. Come on in."
Oaklyn led me inside. Angie lay on the bed, her face pale, with a faint flush. When she saw me, she pushed herself up, an innocent smile lighting her delicate features.
"Gideon, you're here!"
"Yeah. Lie back, let me take a look." Warmth pricked in my chest as I steadied her. I genuinely liked the girl. Her mother might be on the wild side, but Angie hadn't picked up any of that. She was a good kid.
I took Angie's temperature, then started an IV drip and prescribed some meds to bring her fever down and help her recover. I sat by her bed and chatted about schoolwork. Every so often, Oaklyn drifted in, shooting me sultry looks and dropping hints. I pretended not to notice and kept Angie talking about her lessons.
Before I knew it, evening settled in. Oaklyn asked me to stay for dinner. I tried to decline. If I stayed, who knew what kind of gossip would start around the village?
"Gideon, you're making me look bad. Melissa tells you what to do, and you follow." Oaklyn's brows arched, her eyes flashing, anger sharpening her pretty features.
My stomach dipped. It felt like she knew what happened between Melissa and me. If she spread around the village, Melissa and I would be doomed.
I smiled quickly. "Oaklyn, come on. How is that disrespecting you? The clinic might still have patients coming in tonight. If it gets busy, I can't really stay for dinner." I gathered my medical kit and headed out.
Oaklyn stepped in front of me and wrapped both hands around my wrists. She didn't look strong, yet she whisked the kit right out of my grip.
"At dusk? Who's coming? I already told Luke from the village committee to watch the clinic for you for a while."
I went rigid. My thoughts knotted. She had even told Luke that I'd be at her house tonight.
"How can you do that?"
"Why can't I? You treated Angie. To thank you, you have to stay for dinner!"
Oaklyn slid the latch, then turned and threw herself against me. She latched onto me like an octopus. When my gaze dropped, I caught a flash of that ample cleavage. The heat of her skin shook my resolve. Her crimson lips grazed my ear, her breath sending a jolt through me.
No wonder she was a pro at this. I could hardly resist. I knew I shouldn't stay, yet the thought of staying crept in anyway.
Angie heard the commotion and stepped out. "Gideon, just stay for dinner!"
In the end, I decided to stay for dinner.
