Before leaving, Louis thanked Ramon again and again. They exchanged numbers, and Louis told him to reach out if he ever needed a hand.
The real reason Louis kept Ramon's number was his uncanny medical skill. A doctor like that was rare. Meeting one felt like fate.
After Louis left, Eugene's face darkened. He fixed his son with a glare. "What are you waiting for? Call him Master Ramon."
Daniel jolted, then looked at Ramon and called out with genuine respect, "Master Ramon."
Earlier, when Eugene leaned on his status, Daniel had given in and used the title, but not from the heart.
This time was different. After what Ramon had just done, Daniel was truly convinced.
Ramon's medical skill was rare in all of Chicia. With Ramon in the family circle, Daniel figured he was set health-wise.
Eugene snorted, still nursing a grudge about Daniel's earlier attitude.
Ramon gave an awkward smile. "If you're going to call me Master Ramon, what should I call you?"
As the mayor of Leaville, Daniel had perfected the art of reading a room. He caught Ramon's dilemma at once. "Master Ramon, just call me Danny," he said.
"Around outsiders, I'll call you Mr. Daniel. In private, I'll call you what you like," Ramon replied.
After all, Daniel was the mayor of Leaville, and Ramon was much younger than him. Calling Daniel his name felt awkward.
"That won't do." Eugene shook his head.
"Listen to me," Ramon said with a smile.
"Yes," Eugene answered right away, not daring to argue.
Watching his father's deference, Daniel felt a jolt of awe.
He had never seen his proud father soften to anyone except in front of Ramon.
Ramon stayed for lunch at Eugene's home before heading out. At the door, Eugene asked about his plans.
Ramon told him he had already found a job and would take it one step at a time.
He kept the details to himself so Eugene wouldn't worry.
After leaving Eugene's place, Ramon needed to sort out work. He had no experience. Aside from manual labor, he had no idea what to do.
With his medical and geomancy skills, he could have made a quick pile of cash, but that wasn't what he wanted. His abilities weren't for cashing in. He needed mortal mind practice, tempering himself by living among all kinds of people.
He waited at the bus stop and noticed a job notice on the pillar.
A construction company was hiring, and one of the openings was for a security guard.
Ramon didn't know much about the other jobs. Being a security guard basically meant watching the front gate, and he figured he could handle that. He'd find a job to support himself first, then see what came next.
He dialed the number on the notice and scheduled an interview for three.
He got to Zhulsea Construction Company around two.
Zhulsea Construction Company was a local real estate firm whose business stretched across the country and overseas. Even for a security post, the requirements were clear: a clean record, ages eighteen to thirty, with experienced candidates preferred.
Ramon met every requirement except the last one.
Young and fit, with sun-browned skin that spoke of grit, he looked like someone who could handle hardship. Apart from his lack of experience, everything else checked out.
He landed the job with ease and was told to start working the next day.
The sooner he started, the sooner he'd start earning.
Leaving Zhulsea Construction Company, he swung by the market for groceries. He only had a few bills left and couldn't afford to spend freely.
Back home with a bag of vegetables, he opened the fridge and found nothing but a box of sheet face masks.
He chuckled. "Does Camilla not eat?"
He tidied the place and started cooking. This would be his home from now on.
After dinner, he settled into meditation.
He'd been stuck at his current cultivation for two years. His cultivation might weaken if he did not progress.
That night in the shower, he noticed Camilla's clothes beside the tub. A pair of black panties was right there in plain sight, probably left unwashed in the morning rush.
He didn't dare touch them and pretended he hadn't seen a thing.
The next morning, Ramon reported to Zhulsea Construction Company early.
The security captain, Drew, welcomed him.
Once everyone had gathered, Drew held a quick meeting. He glanced at Ramon. "Ramon, it's your first day. Head to the facilities office to pick up your uniform. Today, follow Mateo and get familiar with the premises."
Drew pointed to Mateo, who stood on Ramon's right.
"Yes, Captain," Ramon replied.
"Mateo, Ramon is new. You take the lead. If anything arises that you can't handle, please report it to me. That's all, back to your posts." Drew clapped his hands, and everyone moved to their posts.
After the meeting, Ramon walked over with a smile.
"Hi, Mateo."
Mateo chirped. "I'll take you to the facilities office for your uniform, then show you around so you can learn the ropes."
Mateo was twenty-eight and already had a kid. The pay at Zhulsea Construction Company was good, so he had worked for three years.
"Great. Thanks, Mateo," Ramon said.
Ramon spent the morning teaching Mateo, getting to know the company. Except for the eighth floor, he could walk freely on any level.
The eighth floor housed the office of the company president, Harley Ashby, and it took up the entire floor.
Zhulsea Construction Company was a subsidiary of the Bordan Group. Harley's father owned the Bordan Group. The company had been set up to give her a proving ground, and in a few short years, she had run it so well that the business had expanded overseas.
Leveraging the parent company's resources helped, but without personal ability, outside support would have meant nothing.
"Ramon, got the lay of the land now?" Mateo asked.
"I do," Ramon said with a nod.
"Good. Remember what I said. Don't go to the eighth floor. Ms. Ashby doesn't like men showing up on her floor," Mateo reminded.
