"No!"
Before Dante Doyle could speak, the doctor outside the door strode in. He was Kingston's attending physician, his white coat hanging open, hands in his pockets as he entered briskly. He shot Bella Doyle a glance and said, "This is a hospital. We're all deeply sorry about Mr. Doyle."
"But everything we did followed thorough consultations with multiple experts and professors."
"We kept him going for almost half a day-that was the best we could do."
"And hospital policy forbids anyone outside our staff from participating in treatment."
He shot Fabian Farrell a cold look and raised his voice.
"All those expert consultations and all that effort-yet you still didn't save him, did you?" Fabian replied, his laugh short and dry.
The doctor flushed with anger and barked, "Who are you, and where did you come from?"
"Do you even have a medical license?"
"I'm Kingston's attending physician. I graduated from a top medical school in the States. You're just some country bumpkin from who-knows-where, talking about saving a life-ridiculous."
He pressed forward, firing off questions one after another.
Fabian lifted his head and met the doctor's gaze. "You have a medical license, and you came back from a great university abroad. Did you save Kingston?"
"You-"
The doctor choked on his words.
He drew a breath and raised his voice. "Either way, you can't treat him here. If you try, I'll call the police and report you for practicing medicine illegally."
Hearing that, the relatives behind him started piling on, adding fuel to the fire:
"The doctor is right. We can't let just any Tom, Dick, or Harry touch the old man!"
"Exactly. No medical license, and he thinks he can save a life? What a joke."
"Just look at him-does he look like someone who could treat Hugo? Bella, he's your grandfather; you can't risk his life."
Bella stared at Dante, her voice tight with worry. "Dad! I would never hurt Grandpa. Please, trust me this once."
Dante cut her off with a harsh shout. "No. I won't allow some nobody to treat your grandfather."
Fabian stood his ground and kept quiet. After all, this was Bella's family; they had the right to decide. If Kingston truly died, then that would be his fate. Fabian had already done everything he could.
"Do as I say. Save him. If anything goes wrong, I take responsibility!"
The room had grown awkwardly still when an elderly voice sounded from the doorway. Everyone jumped and turned.
Hugo stood there.
Why was Hugo at the hospital? Could Bella have been telling the truth?
Dante hurried over, anxious. "Hugo, why are you here too?"
"I had a sudden heart attack on the road and nearly died. Even Stephen, a renowned traditional medicine doctor, couldn't save me," Hugo said, his voice ringing clear as Dante steadied him. "This young man saved me."
"If you're worried about consequences, I'll shoulder them."
He turned to Dante. "Dante, you're the backbone of the Doyle family-how can you be so stubborn?"
Dante started, glanced at Fabian's impassive face, and stammered, "Hugo, are you sure it was him? But-"
"No buts," Hugo cut in.
Dante's brows knit. Hugo's face hardened. "What, you don't even trust me? I may be old, but I'm not so muddle-headed I can't remember who saved my life."
At his severity, the relatives who had blocked Fabian fell silent. Even Dylan Briggs shut his mouth. They stared at Hugo, shuffling back a few steps, no one daring to make a sound.
They hadn't expected that this plain, rustic-looking man could actually save lives-and had saved Hugo's. Even Dante was too stunned to speak.
Bella clutched Fabian's sleeve, tears streaking her cheeks. "Fabian, please. Help me. I can't lose Grandpa."
Amara stood quiet for a heartbeat, then stepped forward, her face apologetic. "Fabian, your aunt and uncle wronged you. For Bella's sake, please save the old man. Whether it works or not, we won't hold it against you. Please, help the Doyle family."
Tears spilled again as she spoke.
Fabian let out a small sigh. "All right. Since Bella asks, I will save Kingston."
He had been ready to walk away, but in the end, he couldn't resist Bella's pleading eyes.
The doctor opened his mouth to object, but Hugo leveled a frosty look at him and said loudly, "This is no longer your business. You can go."
A colleague tugged the doctor by the sleeve and hurried him down the hall. "You almost walked into a disaster."
"You just got back from training abroad, so you don't know them. They're from two of the most powerful families in Haltoria."
"Lucky for you they have bigger things to worry about. Even the hospital director would have to smile and be polite to them."
"Let them do whatever they want. We're not getting involved."
The doctor blanched. He didn't dare look back at the room and hurried off. He hadn't expected this young man to have such powerful backing. Better slip away while no one's looking.
Inside the room, Dante started to speak, but Amara caught his arm. He frowned instead and fixed his worried gaze on Kingston, who was barely hanging on.
With everyone watching, Fabian took a small pillbox from his pocket and tapped out a tiny black pill. Without hesitation, he slipped it between Kingston's lips.
"Beep, beep! Beep, beep!"
Within seconds of the pill going down, the monitors steadied. Heart rate, blood pressure, all crept back into normal ranges.
"Kingston is basically out of danger," Fabian said, turning to Bella. "I'll write a prescription. After about two weeks of rest, he should be fine."
"Fabian! Thank you! I love you!" Bella cried. Seeing the danger had passed, she flung herself into his arms. Dante flushed with embarrassment and slowly shot a look at Dylan.
Dylan's fists clenched, his teeth grinding. He hadn't imagined the kid would actually bring Kingston back when the hospital couldn't. A single pill, and a man's life returned. And Hugo stood with him. Now Bella had thrown herself at him as well.
That shameless pair-one day I'll have you on your knees begging me.
Knowing he had been in the wrong, Dante could only cast a sheepish glance at Bella and Fabian, though relief loosened his chest. His father had pulled through.
"He's waking up!"
"This young man is incredible. The hospital had no way, and he solved it with a single pill."
The relatives watched Kingston blink awake and, in an instant, their faces instantly switched to amazement and joy. If there's one thing powerful families are good at, it's putting on a show.
