Early the next morning, Leonard Zimmerman opened the clinic.
Soon after, a woman lingered in the doorway, looking around nervously. The sight made his heart skip.
Daisy Warth was a modest woman, shy at heart. Afraid of being seen, she paced outside for a long time before quietly slipping inside.
"Ms. Warth? What brings you in? Are you feeling unwell?" Leonard swallowed hard and forced down his excitement.
She wore tight blue jeans that hugged her hips and showed off her butt, those long legs impossible to ignore. A low-cut black blouse strained over her full breasts, at least a C. Glossy black hair framed a delicate face-a beauty that was hard to describe.
At the sight of that generous curve, Leonard's fingers itched. Hugh Zorn, he thought, was a lucky man. If he could just grab them once, it'd be worth losing a year off his life.
Even as she stepped inside, Daisy glanced back out. She had been married for years and still hadn't gotten pregnant, and the gossips in the village already had their tongues wagging. She couldn't let those people see her here.
"Dr. Zimmerman, I'm a little embarrassed to say this." She bent and sat. Color bloomed over her cheeks, a fine sheen of sweat on her brow; a few stray strands stuck to her forehead. Her big eyes flickered with panic, which somehow made her look even sweeter.
As she bent, he caught a glimpse of her cleavage. He licked his lips and smiled. "Ms. Warth, what are you talking about? I'm a doctor-I'm here to help. You can tell me anything."
"This, um… Dr. Zimmerman, can you keep this between us?" She glanced over her shoulder again. Only after confirming no one else had come did she exhale, a little of the tension leaving her.
She had risen before dawn, waiting for the clinic to open. When it finally did, fear had clutched her again; she stood outside and hesitated for a long time before mustering the courage to come in.
"A doctor should have compassion. What's going on?" Leonard put on a look of polite puzzlement. Had he not eavesdropped the night before, he would have assumed it was some ordinary women's ailment.
"Dr. Zimmerman, you know I've been married to that man for years. I still haven't gotten pregnant. I came to ask if you have any medicine or something." Daisy spoke scarlet-faced, voice barely above a whisper.
She still couldn't bring herself to say aloud that Hugh was impotent.
"I see. You don't need to be nervous. I'll have to examine you before I know what's going on," Leonard said, sober and professional.
Inside, desire gnawed at him. At last, an excuse for intimate contact.
"What… an exam?" Daisy blinked. She had little schooling. For a cough or a cold, villagers usually just picked up medicine and went home.
"This isn't something to treat carelessly. You don't want to be without a child forever, do you?" Leonard said. He hit a nerve.
At the mention of a child, her face lit up a little at the thought of a baby.
"But my husband cares too much about his pride. He refuses to come." Thinking of Hugh, her spirits sagged. It drove her crazy how hopeless he could be.
"It isn't always just the man-sometimes it's the woman. If Hugh won't come in, you can get checked first," Leonard said.
"Me… what could be wrong with me?" Daisy froze. Her husband couldn't perform, and she still had to be examined?
"We need to be thorough. Let's run some basic tests so we don't miss anything," he coaxed.
"All right." She extended her wrist for him to take her pulse. Leonard shook his head. "If I could tell that from your pulse, Hugh wouldn't have to be embarrassed about coming in. I know you're embarrassed. I'm a doctor. Please trust me."
You can't diagnose infertility from a pulse.
"Then…" Daisy's cheeks deepened to a warm rose. They'd been married for years, but she was still a virgin. Even saying as much made her want to hide.
Leonard stood, walked to the entrance, and pulled down the metal shutter. "Ms. Warth, come with me to the treatment room. I'll see what's going on."
With the door closed, she would worry less.
Daisy nodded. The treatment room was mainly for massage and cupping. There was a bed there; villagers with sore backs and aching shoulders came for cupping all the time.
Leonard went in first, then told her to lie down. Daisy lay stiffly, tension thrumming through her. If, after all these years, it turned out the problem was hers, and Hugh learned of it, she knew she'd get an earful.
"If you're nervous, you can close your eyes. These exams are necessary," Leonard said, noticing the faint tremor in her body.
"All right…" Daisy closed her eyes, hoping it would calm her nerves.
Leonard swallowed and lowered his hand onto her breast. Daisy shuddered. She bit her lip.
