Nivon.
At high noon, the sun was blazing, hot enough to sear. Jason Yare jolted awake in his wheelchair, eyes wide with terror.
He saw a dark, underwater world in his mind's eye: duckweed drifting, shrimp flickering past, until everything froze on a corpse-pale face.
Thud!
Jason pitched out of the chair. Clarity snapped back into his gaze.
Just then, the front door opened, and in came a laughing man and woman.
"The waterbeds at a love hotel feel amazing. Why bring me to your place?"
"That's what makes it exciting. What, you scared of Jason, that vegetable?"
A loud buzzing filled Jason's ears; he'd only just come to.
He knew that voice. Janice Yale.
She'd been his only real girlfriend all four years of college.
If he hadn't jumped into the water to save someone and been sucked into a whirlpool, leaving him in a vegetative state, they might have been married.
Even so, his mind had stayed awake inside a body that would not obey. He knew Janice had been taking care of him. He also knew she had someone else.
He just hadn't imagined she'd bring her lover into his home to have sex.
"I bought a super cute set of lingerie. I'll put it on for you in a bit."
"Baby, you treat me so nice… Why is he on the floor?!"
Only then did they notice Jason crumpled there.
A flicker of alarm crossed Janice's face. She crept forward to check him. When she saw he still lay slack and motionless, she gave a little laugh and hauled him back into the wheelchair with effort.
Smack!
Her hand snapped across his cheek.
"I thought you were awake. Scared me half to death."
Heat seared his face. His head lolled toward the doorway, and he finally took in the man's features.
Him.
Spencer Jenkins.
Spencer, a trust-fund kid and Jason's dorm mate for four years, the friend he hung out with the most besides Janice.
And Spencer had climbed into his girlfriend's bed.
"Damn it." A searing pain twisted in Jason's heart. He wanted to leap up and kill the two of them on the spot.
But five years trapped in a body that barely remembered how to be alive had left his limbs stiff as boards. He needed time to claw his way back.
On the couch, Spencer asked, "Why keep hanging on to him? Just cut him off for good so we don't have to keep sneaking around."
"No way," Janice said. "His mom said that when she dies, she'll transfer this apartment to me. On the market, they're about $500,000 these days."
"His mom's only in her forties. You're going to wait for her to die? That's going to take forever, like hell freezing over."
"Who said anything about waiting? The last five years were me putting on a show for his mom, making her think I truly plan to stick by Jason for life." Janice smiled. "Now the timing's right. Look at this."
She pulled a document from her bag and handed it over.
"IVF consent form?" Spencer blinked.
"Yep. Next, I'll tell his mom I used Jason's sperm for IVF and got pregnant. Then I'll force her to transfer the apartment to my name. There's our $500,000."
"She can't be that dumb. What if she drags you to a hospital for a blood test, and it turns out you're not pregnant?"
Janice gave a sly smile and nestled against him. "Remember last month at the office, when you were so worked up you didn't put on a condom? It took."
"You're carrying my kid?!" Spencer gaped. "Don't jerk me around. Is this for real?"
"How would I fake that? Do the math. The timing fits."
Spencer stared at her, then grabbed her and kissed her hard.
"I love you to death!" he shouted, giddy. "Jason's my good-luck charm! A wife, a baby, and a home, all gift-wrapped for me."
Janice hooked her arms around his neck, eyes shining. "When I've got that $500,000 as my wedding money, you'd better treat me right."
"Don't worry. I'll treat you right."
"Spencer, I want…"
"I'll satisfy you."
With a flip, Spencer straddled Janice and kissed her like a starving man.
Riiip!
"Hey! I just bought that dress."
"I'll buy you another. Designer."
His voice came rough and fast. Cloth scraps flew. Soon, the living room was strewn with torn fabric.
Their breathing grew heavier and heavier on the couch.
Jason lay with his head turned, listening to the languid, shameless chorus, fury rising until it pressed against his ribs. He wanted to curse them for having no sense of shame, but the muscles in his throat wouldn't answer.
Mercifully, three minutes later, the world fell quiet again.
"I'm taking a shower. Then I'll put on that sexy outfit and put on a real show." Janice slipped off toward the bathroom.
Spencer lit a cigarette, caught Jason's chin between his fingers, and made him look at him.
He exhaled a plume of smoke.
"Don't worry, Jason. I'll take good care of your girl. I'll even let you watch it live, heh, heh…"
Before long, Janice came out in a skimpy bunny costume. She tossed Spencer a set of Jason's clothes.
"Put these on."
"Why would I wear his clothes?"
She stepped close and said, "If we're chasing thrills, we go all the way."
Spencer blinked, then gave a knowing smile. "You're so dirty."
Jason ground his teeth as the two of them flaunted their fun. His vision burned. All at once, he felt his arm, veins bulging across his body.
Spencer, halfway into the shirt, felt a chill run up his back. He whipped around.
In the next instant, he saw the change.
"Look! Is he waking up?!"
He yanked Janice in front of him like a shield, pointing at Jason's hand as it trembled on its own.
"What are you thinking? The doctor said his chances of waking up are about the same as the world ending."
Janice punctuated her certainty with a vicious slap.
Blood burst from Jason's nose.
Spencer saw no reaction and let out a thin breath.
"Let's get the apartment squared away fast. If that guy really wakes up, five years of acting will have been for nothing."
Janice hummed her agreement. "I'll tell his mom tonight. If she refuses, I'll abort."
"If she still won't agree after that, I'll poison her. Either way, that place is going to be mine."
Veins stood out all over Jason's body. He could stomach any indignity, except when it involved his mother.
Rage blinded him. As if possessed, he lunged at Janice and clamped both hands around her throat.
Bang!
They hit the floor together.
Jason's face twisted into something feral. He finally forced out a single word. "Bitch."
Terror and raw disbelief flooded Janice's eyes. She forgot to struggle. She was completely out of it.
Spencer collapsed onto the floor, stunned stupid.
Hadn't the doctor said the odds of him waking up were worse than the world coming to an end?
As she neared blackout, Janice's legs flailed and she accidentally kicked Spencer. He snapped out of it like a man startled from a dream.
"Let her go!"
Remembering she carried his child, he sucked in a panicked breath, grabbed the nearest thing at hand, and swung for Jason's head.
Crack!
Blood ran down Jason's temple. He sagged and went limp.
Spencer dropped the broken handle from the vase and hauled Janice up. He trembled. "Move!"
Janice glanced at Jason in the spreading pool of red. She was in a total daze, and let Spencer drag her out of the apartment.
Neither of them noticed the jade pendant that had slipped from Jason's chest. When it touched his blood, it gave off a faint, eerie red glow.
