As if some unseen force kept tugging at it, the shadow sank back into the girl's body, then floated up again.
It rose and fell several times, until at last it drifted loose, about to slip free.
No one else saw it but Wesley. If that shadow drifted off and dissolved, the girl would be truly gone.
He surged forward and slapped his palm to the child's forehead, shoving the shadow back into her.
It writhed, still trying to fight its way out. He pinned it with his right hand, his palm pressed hard to her brow, then lifted his left and struck the crown of her head, right on the Head Acupoint, holding until the shadow settled and stayed inside her.
That stunt left the gawkers stunned.
"What do you think you're doing?" The woman lunged in and shoved him aside.
"Wesley, what are you doing?" Katie hurried up and grabbed his arm.
"I'm a doctor. You wanted a doctor, didn't you? I can save her," Wesley told the woman.
"Ms. Thea, I'm so sorry. He's my husband. He's not a doctor. He's a delivery guy."
Katie rattled off the explanation. In her eyes, Wesley was a delivery guy. How could he know medicine? Afraid he might make a mess of things, she dragged him back.
"He's not a doctor?"
"Doctor, my foot. Can't you see the courier uniform? He's just a delivery guy."
"Exactly. If he's a doctor, then I'm a miracle healer." People muttered, scoffing.
"Give me a break! What's a delivery guy doing sticking his nose in?" someone sneered.
Thea looked Wesley up and down. Delivery uniform, plain as day. With Katie saying he wasn't a doctor, and they were husband and wife, it sounded convincing.
Realizing Wesley wasn't a doctor and had just manhandled her daughter, Thea snapped.
"A damn delivery guy dares lay hands on my child? I'll kill you!" She swung for his face.
Smack!
Wesley caught her wrist. "Believe me or not, but why hit me?"
"You touched my daughter. I'll hit you!"
Thea yanked free and raised her hand again. Katie rushed in and pulled Wesley away. "Wesley, stop making trouble. Let's go."
A delivery guy claiming to be a doctor made Katie want to crawl under a rock.
"Sorry, Thea. He's my husband, and he isn't a doctor," she kept explaining.
Thea shot Wesley a cold glance and held her tongue.
The ambulance arrived. A paramedic jumped out and got the little girl onto a stretcher. As Thea climbed in, Wesley said, "Lady, if you still want to save your daughter in three days, call me."
He turned and walked off.
He felt frustrated. He had a chance to wake the girl up, but the woman wouldn't trust him. If not for him, the child would already have died.
"You... you're still making trouble!" Katie burst out, barely stopping herself from kicking him. "Three days? Who do you think you are, some miracle doctor?"
Thea glanced back at Wesley, said nothing, and got into the ambulance.
The police arrived shortly after. Their investigation showed it had been a sudden traffic accident. The truck driver had been detained and injured. He was sent to the hospital.
The car's driver had run, but there were cameras at the intersection, and witnesses had jotted down the plate. The police would easily find the driver.
Wesley and Katie got in their car.
"Damn, that guy was badass. He dodged the tipping truck at the very last second," someone behind them marveled.
In the car, Katie rounded on him. "Wesley, why stir up trouble? Do you even know who she is? And you dared pretend to be a doctor!"
"Why should I care who she is? Is it wrong to say I'm a doctor? I am a doctor." Wesley spread his hands, looking helpless.
"You… Drive!" Katie snapped. If Wesley truly had the skill to pull someone back from the brink, would he be a delivery guy? Her chest heaved with anger.
They didn't believe him, and Wesley couldn't be bothered to argue.
He drove away from the scene.
On the way, his phone rang. It was Iris.
Wesley answered, and her soft voice floated over. "Wesley, do you have time tonight? Let's have dinner."
Before he could reply, she added, "It's a special day for me. You're not allowed to refuse."
With her putting it that way, he couldn't say no.
"After work, can you come to my company first? We'll go together," Iris said, full of expectation.
"All right." Wesley had nothing pressing anyway. He had never been to her company and didn't know the address.
"I'll drop you a pin." Iris, ever considerate, texted him her location, then fussed over the details and made him promise not to stand her up before hanging up.
Wesley shot a look at Katie in the passenger seat.
Her pretty face had gone cold. She knew a woman had called him, but given the agreement between them, neither party was to interfere with the other's private life, so she held back.
Even so, her expression stayed icy the whole way home.
"Women always say one thing and do another," Wesley muttered, shaking his head.
Back at the villa, Katie headed straight to the family compound.
When Dawson saw the check, he was floored. He hadn't expected the money to come back, even with the Norman family calling in favors from their underworld contacts. The contract had been extended for another year, with the pharmaceutical costs prepaid.
Though furious, he kept his mouth shut. The terms between the parties tied his hands.
"Katie, how did you get this money back?" Dawson acted nonchalant, probing for a hint. Did she have someone powerful behind her?
"It wasn't that hard. I went over there, and they gave it to me," Katie said, telling the truth.
"You went once, and they just handed it over?" Dawson just stared. The family had previously relied on underworld connections but was rebuffed. Now that she had gone once, they paid the debt and even added another one million dollars. Dawson found that hard to believe.
