The knife blade glinted cold under the lights as it drove straight for Asher Jauncy's chest.
Harris Zorn had counted on Juliana Yale blocking Asher's line of sight, leaving him no time to react.
He fully believed that with this thrust, even if Asher didn't die, he'd be badly wounded. Then he could settle the score from earlier.
But he still underestimated Asher.
Asher never gave him the chance to get close. His right leg snapped up and slammed into Harris's stomach.
The kick carried brutal force. Harris flew like a ragged sack.
Thud-he slammed into the private room's wall. The folding knife in his hand spun away and lodged in the wooden doorframe, its handle still buzzing.
"Cough… cough, cough…"
Harris slid down the wall and crumpled to the floor, clutching his belly, face drained white as he wheezed out thin coughs.
He looked about ready to pass out.
Terror flooded his stare at Asher. "A-Asher, I was wrong! I won't do it again! Please don't kill me! I won't go against you anymore!"
He regretted it to his core.
If he'd known Asher could fight like this, he wouldn't have lifted a finger even with ten times the guts.
That kick had almost shattered his insides. Even breathing hurt.
If he hadn't worked out, that single kick might've killed him.
Asher walked over and looked down at him, voice frigid. "You like breaking people's legs, don't you?"
"D-Don't! Asher, I was wrong! I won't do it again!"
As Asher raised his foot, Harris went white with terror and tried to scoot back.
But his back was pressed to the wall. There was nowhere to retreat. He could only watch Asher's foot lift higher.
Crack! A sharp bone-snap echoed through the private room, harsher than the steel pipe hitting the floor earlier.
"Ah! My leg!"
Harris's eyes bulged; his mouth yawned wide as a howl tore out of him.
The scream lasted only a heartbeat. Color drained from his face, his body went limp, and he blacked out.
Juliana stood to the side, stunned, her face as white as paper.
It took her a long beat to come back to herself. She pointed at Asher and screeched, "Asher! Are you insane? You really crippled Young Master Zorn's leg! Do you know who he is? He's the eldest of the Zorn family! His father, the head of the Zorn family, won't let you go! You're dead! You'll drag the Yale family down with you!"
All she could think about was the Zorn family's revenge.
She never considered that she'd tricked Asher into coming here first. In her eyes, he was the walking disaster who'd brought the sky crashing down.
Garrett Yale panicked too. He hurried over and grabbed Asher's arm, his voice shaking. "Asher, how could you really cripple his leg? Andrew Zorn is vicious and vindictive. If he learns his son's leg is broken, he'll come at you with everything! What are we going to do…"
He stamped his foot in agitation, thought for a long moment, then forced himself to speak.
"At this point, I'll find a way to protect you. I'll reach out to my old friends and have them smooth things over. If that doesn't work, I'll take you out of Zerton to lie low somewhere else. We can come back after the storm passes."
No matter what, Asher was Zakiel's disciple.
Years ago, Zakiel had saved his life. He couldn't stand by and watch Asher fall into trouble.
Juliana grew even angrier when she heard that. She yelled at Garrett, "Dad! Are you crazy? You're actually helping an outsider! He crippled Young Master Zorn's leg. The Zorn family will definitely vent their anger on us! The Yale family will be finished! You should hand him over and apologize to the Zorn family, not protect him!"
Garrett whipped around and glared at Juliana, his voice thick with disappointment and anger. "Shut up! If you hadn't colluded with Harris Zorn and tricked Asher here into a setup, would any of this have happened? Asher is a benefactor to the Yale family. If you dare say another word like that, don't call me your father again."
He finally saw her clearly.
His daughter had been spoiled rotten. All she saw were money and big names. She had no conscience at all.
Asher gently pushed Garrett's hand away, his tone as calm as ever. "Uncle Yale, thank you for your kindness, but I don't need to hide."
He looked at Harris unconscious on the floor, his eyes steady and cold.
"If Andrew Zorn wants to come for me, I'll be here. His son tried to kill me. I took a leg-that was me holding back."
He paused, then turned to Juliana. His voice cooled.
"As for the engagement, drop it. Miss Yale and I aren't on the same path; we weren't meant to be. We had our meal-let's leave it at that. If you ever feel unwell or face something you can't handle, you can still come to me."
The only reason he still gave Garrett face was for Zakiel's sake.
With that, Asher stopped looking at anyone in the private room and turned for the door.
In moments, his figure slipped out of sight.
Once Asher left, Juliana rushed to Harris's side, fumbling out her phone and dialing Andrew Zorn, her voice breaking.
"Uncle Zorn! It's bad! Young Master Zorn-Young Master Zorn got beaten! His leg got broken! Please bring people to Riverview Pavilion! If you come any later, it'll be too late!"
On the other end, Andrew Zorn exploded. He roared, "What? Who dared touch my son? Crippled his leg? Wait there! I'm bringing people right now! Whoever laid a hand on Andrew Zorn's boy-I'll tear him limb from limb!"
He hung up and immediately gathered a dozen men.
Each carried steel pipes and cleavers. They piled into more than ten black luxury cars and thundered toward Riverview Pavilion. The convoy tore down the road, engines roaring, drawing stares from passersby. Plenty thought it was a gang war and ducked far out of the way.
…
After Juliana hung up, she found Garrett staring at her, expression cold.
She didn't feel the slightest bit at fault. She spoke with righteous confidence. "Dad, you saw that, right? Asher made trouble and ran right off! If I hadn't made that call, the Yale family would be dragged down with him!"
Garrett felt completely chilled inside. He shook his head, sighed, and said to Juliana, "Do as you will. From now on, I'm done with your affairs."
He didn't spare another look for Harris on the floor or the tearful Juliana. He turned on his heel and left.
He truly was utterly disappointed in his daughter.
Back in the Riverview Pavilion box, Juliana looked at the unconscious Harris with only one thought in her mind.
Asher Jauncy, just you wait! Once Uncle Zorn arrives, he'll seek justice for Young Master Zorn. You're as good as dead!
The Zorn family's cars arrived in no time, and Harris Zorn was rushed to Central Hospital.
Meanwhile, Asher Jauncy strolled along as if nothing had happened, heading toward Zerton Street in the city center.
