Maria Scurr sat on the edge of the bed when the wooden door behind her eased open without warning.
A knife-cold draft seeped through the crack. She clutched the thin blanket tighter and turned.

She moved without a sound, as if walking on air. A dense chill bled off her, dropping the room's temperature by several degrees.
