The one holding up the bidding paddle was a boy, no more than seventeen. His face was sallow and thin, and every so often he coughed into his fist, like sickness had hollowed him out from the inside. He lifted his paddle and smiled.
"You two should stop fighting," he said lightly. "Let her go to me."
Solomon Sabey had been seething a moment ago, but the instant he saw the boy, all the heat drained out of him. Without a word, he lowered his paddle.
