The wedding wrapped up in a hurry, and Ander Yale went home with Alexis Juggins and her parents.
"Young man-no, son-in-law," Quinton Juggins said as he opened the door, forcing a polite smile despite the awkwardness, "you married our daughter, so we're family. Make yourself at home. Sit wherever you like."
"Dad, you and Mom sit first," Ander said quickly. "Alexis has been on her feet all day. I'll help her upstairs to rest."
Emery Casson's eyes were still red. She stepped in front of him and snapped, "Back off. Don't you lay a hand on our daughter."
She shouldered Ander aside and took Alexis upstairs herself.
Quinton sighed. "You're Ander Yale, right? Ander, don't hold your mother-in-law's attitude against her. It's just…"
Ander didn't mind. He smiled. "Dad, I understand."
"After all, I did just get out of prison, and Alexis is a well-bred young lady-your pride and joy. It's normal to think I don't deserve her."
Quinton shook his head. "It's not about deserving or not. We just don't know anything about you, and this happened too fast." He glanced upstairs. "And you saw how Alexis is. Your mother-in-law and I… we worry more with each passing day."
"Dad, I can cure her," Ander said.
Before Quinton could answer, Emery came back down and let out a chilly laugh. "You can cure Alexis? Do you think we'd believe that?"
"Zerton has so many famous doctors, and none of them could help her. Are you saying you're better than those professors and experts?"
Ander almost said that those so-called experts weren't worth a second look-peacocks preening for fame. Emery cut him off and pressed on:
"Our family is upper-class. Even if we arranged a marriage, it would be with a proper match, not a penniless ex-convict."
"Young man, I don't mean to look down on you. It's just that your background and your status are far, far beneath our Alexis."
"As for her illness, don't trouble yourself. A top physician will make a house call tomorrow."
"Once our Alexis recovers, the two of you will go file for divorce. A forced marriage never works. I hope you know your place."
Quinton forced a laugh. "Honey, didn't you see? Alexis seemed to like Ander. Maybe he's her lucky star."
"And who gets divorced right after the wedding? Let them try being together."
"Then you try being with this kid," Emery shot back, anger flaring. "I will not let Alexis be defiled by him."
Quinton went mute, lips working but no words coming.
Seeing his dilemma, Ander offered quietly, "It's fine, Dad. As long as Alexis gets better, I'm a grown man-I can take a few hits to my pride."
Quinton nodded, satisfied. "At the wedding, you stood up for our daughter. And now you're willing to stomach your mother-in-law's temper. Ander, you're a good kid."
Ander waved it off, then turned and saw Alexis come bouncing down the stairs in Doraemon pajamas.
"Hubby, why aren't you sleeping with me?" She latched onto his arm, eyes big and guileless. "We're married, aren't we? Married couples can't sleep apart. Come on, let's go upstairs and sleep."
"Absolutely not!" Emery blurted, face draining.
Alexis pouted and snapped, "Who are you? Get out of my way. Don't you dare ruin things between me and my husband."
"Or I won't be nice."
Emery stared, stunned.
Her silly daughter had married Ander and now didn't even recognize her own mother? She was threatening her?
Quinton, on the other hand, lit up. "See? I told you, Ander's our lucky star."
"Look at her-feels like she's on the verge of getting better."
Emery hesitated. It was true. Ever since Alexis met Ander, she had stopped drifting in a daze and grown more lively. Now she even knew that newlyweds should sleep together.
"Fine," she said reluctantly. "I admit this boy seems… special to Alexis. She relies on him."
"But men and women shouldn't be too close. If he so much as touches our daughter, I'll make him regret it."
She ran to the kitchen, grabbed a cleaver, and clomped upstairs-thud, thud, thud.
Ander spent the whole night under her watch, at a loss for words.
Worse, his new wife lay right beside him, soft and warm, smelling faintly of shampoo and sunshine. Alexis's generous curves pressed against him, leaving no room to breathe.
He wasn't a saint. This kind of trial was brutal. But with Emery glaring from the chair, knife across her knees, he could only lie there like a monk.
The next morning, a pink Maserati pulled up outside Alexis's house.
A short-haired beauty with sultry features climbed out of the driver's seat. "Diego Scull, my friend's place is here," she urged. "Please, use your skills and cure her."
"Lead the way," Diego Scull murmured, his weathered face inscrutable.
Energized, the short-haired woman hurried up and rang the bell.
Emery opened the door, delighted. "Gwen, you're here."
Gwen Lidyard smiled. "Auntie, I went to the provincial capital and brought Diego Scull. Alexis can be saved."
Hearing the words provincial capital and Diego Scull, Quinton and Emery hurried forward to greet him.
"Diego Scull, thank you for making the trip."
"Please, come in."
Diego Scull gave a casual nod and stepped into the house with an air of quiet mastery.
Watching from the side, Ander asked, "Dad, is this the doctor you brought to treat Alexis?"
Quinton lowered his voice. "That's right. This is Estoria's famous Vincenzo Scull. His medical skills are legendary-you can't hire him with money."
"If not for Alexis's best friend Gwen, our family would never get near someone like him."
Ander said nothing.
If Diego Scull could cure Alexis, he would keep his hands off. If not, he would act.
Upstairs, Diego Scull had already begun the treatment.
Worried, Ander went up to watch.
Gwen spun around and shot him a furious glare. "Move. Don't stand here getting in the way."
"My wife is being treated," Ander said evenly. "Watching over her is the least I can do."
"Your wife?" Gwen sneered, disdain curling her pretty features. "Wake up."
"Who are you, and who is Alexis? Do you really think you're fit to marry her?"
"Whether I'm fit isn't up to you," Ander replied, voice flat.
"Diego Scull never fails," Gwen snapped. "Alexis will recover any minute. Then she'll kick you to the curb. Go back to wherever you came from."
Ander gave her a once-over. "Miss, your yin fire was raging and your qi and blood were blocked. Hm? You haven't had your period in two months, have you?"
"That's a precursor to a manic episode. Do yourself a favor and get treated."
Gwen's face flamed. Mortified and livid, she raised her hand to slap him.
This creep even knew she hadn't had her period in two months? Shameless.
