Under Pierce Looske's Nine Profound Annihilation Sword Formation, more than two thousand elites from the Hayde family, the Shirvinton family, the Lapwood family, and the Thubron Alliance perished. None survived.
By maneuvering the formation with surgical precision, Pierce erased the main forces of the three great families with ease. He left the cleanup to Peony. The strength of Flowber Palace spoke for itself, and he believed she would sweep up the remnants and finish what he started, bringing a complete end to Seafrost's Four Great Families.
Yet Pierce did not bask in victory. Ian Hayde's dying words weighed on his mind. The Four Great Families had not acted on their own when they wiped out the Wimple family. Someone else had been pulling the strings.
Who?
Ian Hayde and the others knew Pierce would never let them go. They took the mastermind's name to the grave. With the trail broken again, Pierce could only rely on himself.
He had yet to learn the identity of the enigmatic man who took his godmother. Was that man the same person behind the scenes?
Speculation circled, but nothing conclusive surfaced.
Pierce instructed Peony to clear the battlefield, continue eradicating the remnants of the three families, and dig deep into the Wimple massacre. A nagging hunch told him his godmother's case was far more complicated than it seemed. There had to be a colossal secret hidden behind it. Otherwise, why hide behind the Four Great Families? Borrowing their hands was the perfect way to mask one's identity.
The more tangled the scheme, the tougher the investigation.
Seafrost shook. The Four Great Families had fallen. When word spread that an obscure junior had done it, the shock only grew. Some doubted the news-not that the families were gone, but that a nobody had pulled it off. Many insisted there had to be a powerful force backing him.
Blood drew sharks. They came to feed, tore at the spoils, and smashed into one another for profit. The city's power map was rewritten. Once-lofty clans turned to dust. Former tyrants vanished without a trace. Flowber Palace gorged on the windfall and nearly overate.
And the man who set all of this in motion-Pierce-stood apart like an outsider, unaware of Seafrost's turmoil. Or rather, uninterested.
Drako Villa lay as quiet as ever.
Pierce immersed himself in cultivation. He drew the world's spiritual energy into his body, guided it along his meridians, and gathered it in his core, refining it into dense True Energy. Though he had come down the mountain, he did not slack off. His talent was rare, but his achievements came from grit.
His strength was impressive, but he knew there were plenty stronger than him. He simply had not met them yet. There was always someone beyond you, always a higher sky. The simple truth sat branded in his heart. He had to grow stronger, or he would never protect the people at his side. He would not be humiliated again. He refused to return to what he had been six years ago.
Pierce ended his cultivation.
The villa's doorbell rang. He frowned. Who would come looking for him?
Mina, the maid, walked in and bowed. "Young Master, a girl calling herself Lexie Looske is here for you."
Pierce paused. How did Lexie find this place? What did she want?
"Let her in," he said.
"Understood."
Lexie soon stepped into the villa in a simple white T-shirt, blue jeans, and white sneakers. Her hair was tied into a casual ponytail. She had the easy air of the girl next door, but beauty still shone through. Fatigue lined her face, yet her eyes were bright and firm. Tall, fair-skinned, and fresh as mountain air, she caught the light without trying.
Pierce took her in. The little shadow who used to trail after him had grown up. It even made his heart stir.
"How did you find this place?" he asked.
Lexie shot him a small, exasperated look. "After everything that happened, you think we wouldn't know where you live?"
Fair enough. He hadn't hidden his address. It made sense that she knew.
"Brother Pierce, did you really wipe out Seafrost's Four Great Families?" she asked. Excitement flickered in her eyes, but so did worry.
Pierce did not deny it. He nodded. "Yes. They exterminated my godmother's family. I avenged her."
"I'm sorry, Brother Pierce. I knew about what happened to the Wimple family, but I couldn't help." Guilt crept into Lexie's voice. "I went to ask the Looske family to act, but they refused."
"This isn't on you," Pierce said, shaking his head.
How could the Looske family lift a finger for the Wimple family? Lexie had already severed ties with them. Even if she had not, she would not have had the standing to move the Looske family on the Wimple family's behalf.
"Brother Pierce, what will you do next?" Lexie had come because she was worried.
"Keep digging. Find my godmother. Find the one behind it all," Pierce said, his tone firm.
Lexie opened her mouth to say she could help.
The doorbell rang again.
Pierce frowned. A lot of visitors today.
Mina returned. "Young Master, there's a girl in military uniform outside. She requests to see you."
Pierce thought for a moment. He did not recall knowing anyone like that. "Send her away. I don't know her."
"Understood."
Mina went to dismiss the visitor. Moments later, a woman's shout cut into the villa, loud and sharp.
"Pierce Looske, you piece of trash, get out here!"
Pierce's brows drew together. He would not pretend he hadn't heard.
He walked toward the villa's entrance. Lexie followed at his heels.
"Young Master, I'm sorry," Mina said, chagrined.
"It's fine," Pierce replied. His gaze shifted to the woman who had insulted him.
She wore a military uniform and carried herself with hard-edged poise. Short hair framed a proud face, her tall frame outlined in crisp lines. Sun-browned skin spoke of field drills. A jeep with military plates idled behind her.
"Who are you?" Pierce asked. He had never met her.
The uniformed woman gave him a once-over. "You're Pierce Looske?"
"I'm Blaire Letherdale, personal guard to General Lawes. I'm here for you to sign an annulment agreement." Her chin tilted, disdain blatant. "Trash like you doesn't deserve our General Lawes."
She flung a document at him. Pierce did not lift a hand. The papers slid across the ground.
Memory rose, unbidden. When he was a child, his parents had arranged a marriage for him. The girl's name had been Angelina Lawes.
"Pierce Looske, sign it already. Stop daydreaming. You're just a toad eyeing a swan," Blaire sneered. "Our General Lawes will join the War God Hall one day. How could a waste like you climb that high? Only a War God-level powerhouse qualifies to marry her."
"Shut up. Don't talk to Brother Pierce like that!" Lexie snapped, glowering.
Blaire's lip curled. "You're really something, Pierce. Back in Seafrost for what, a minute, and you've got two women hanging off you? A fickle man like you has no right to marry General Lawes. Be smart and sign the annulment."
She had clearly taken Lexie and Mina for Pierce's women. Why else would they be inside his villa?
Pierce's face stayed calm. He had almost forgotten about that arrangement. Even if he remembered, he would have found a chance to end it. He and Angelina Lawes had only met a few times as children. There were no feelings there. He would not marry someone he did not like.
If they had come politely, with genuine respect, he might have gone along and signed. He had intended to annul it anyway.
Now, he had changed his mind.
"If you want to annul it, have Angelina Lawes come in person. I might consider it," Pierce said, voice cold.
"What gives you the right to summon General Lawes? I am her personal guard. Me coming is already giving you face." Blaire lifted her hand in a haughty wave. "Sign it, Pierce. Don't be ungrateful."
Smack!
Blaire staggered, one hand flying to her reddening cheek, eyes wide with shock.
"You've got it backward," Lexie said, glaring. "It's Angelina Lawes who isn't worthy of Brother Pierce."
"And Brother Pierce isn't trash. Yesterday he wiped out Seafrost's Four Great Families with his own hands. Can Angelina Lawes do that?"
She enunciated each word. Pride lit her face, as if she had been the one to level Seafrost's giants-or at least, as if it were her honor to stand at his side.
