"Ugh… my head's killing me!"
Atreus Lyson clutched his skull and slowly sat up on a soft, oversized bed.
His mind felt waterlogged, as if a sledgehammer had caved it in. His face was damp, and a faint metallic stink of blood lingered in his nose.
He wiped at his cheek on instinct. Just as he started to swing his legs off the bed to find some water and dull the vicious headache, his hand slid over something slick.
The sensation snapped him halfway awake.
Atreus jerked his head to the side. One look, and his eyes went wide.
A beautiful, mature woman lay beside him, smiling as she watched him.
Shredded pieces of women's clothing and crumpled tissues littered the room.
Their gazes locked.
"Aunt Rhea?!" Atreus's pupils blew wide as he blurted it out.
Then, like he'd been burned, he yanked the blanket to his chest and tumbled off the bed in a clumsy heap.
"Aunt Rhea, I'm sorry. I, I drank last night…" He babbled, his voice tight with panic and helplessness.
He had only realized yesterday, after spotting a photo on her table, that his client Rhea Zimmerman was Keenan Warth's actual mother. His college classmate's mom.
It was unreal.
He had slept with his classmate's mother.
Rhea shot him a coy, reproachful look. "And you're still calling me 'Aunt Rhea'…"
Atreus's stomach dropped. The worst part was, he'd blacked out.
Had he really said things to her last night?
"Aunt Rhea, I really didn't mean to. I…"
Seeing how tense he was, Rhea looked amused. "You weren't like this last night. What, you think I'm going to eat you alive?"
Atreus's thoughts churned into a messy stew. He cursed himself under his breath. Alcohol really did ruin everything.
"Aunt Rhea, last night I… I really…"
Rhea's phoenix eyes lifted slightly as she teased, "What, you're afraid I'll make you take responsibility for me?"
Atreus's brain short-circuited. His face burned with embarrassment. "Aunt Rhea, please don't joke. Last night I…"
Rhea pouted and glared at him, all sweetness and bite. "Call me Rhea."
Knowing he was in the wrong, Atreus swallowed and corrected himself. "Rhea…"
Wrapped in a sexy silk nightgown, Rhea reached out with pale, slender fingers and lightly poked his chest. "Even if you didn't get your fill, you can't keep going anyway. My husband's about to come back."
The moment he heard "husband," Atreus's head went off like a bomb.
He panicked, scrambling around for his clothes, ready to bolt.
"Where are my pants?!" he shouted.
Rhea laughed so hard she nearly shook.
"Alright, alright. I'll stop messing with you. We've been divorced for ages. He's only coming to grab a few things. Even if he runs into you, it's no big deal."
Atreus had just found his underwear when he froze, stiff as a board, his expression turning painfully awkward.
"Rhea… that joke wasn't funny at all." He patted his chest, still rattled.
That scare had been real.
If he'd been caught in bed by her husband, he would've been beaten to death.
And as for Keenan Warth… Atreus didn't even have a good relationship with him. Back in college, Keenan had been the textbook rich kid, and he'd even chased Atreus's girlfriend, Lola Lashbrook.
They had been rivals, plain and simple. Even after all this time, Keenan still hadn't given up on Lola and had shown up at her company more than once…
"Look at you, all courage and no spine," Rhea said, shooting him a sultry glance. "Yesterday you were like a beast. And this is what scares you?"
She turned, picked up a contract from the nightstand, and tossed it lightly onto the floor in front of him.
Atreus stared, blank. It took him a moment to find his voice. "Rhea… what does this mean?"
Rhea's lips curved into a faint smile. "An insurance contract. I already signed it. Consider it your reward for last night."
A joy he couldn't quite hide rose on Atreus's face. He'd been in insurance sales for three months, and he'd finally landed his first deal.
"Rhea, thank you so much!"
Rhea's smile deepened, her eyes full of playful meaning. "If you want to thank me, just talking isn't enough… but I'll put it on your tab for this time. He's almost here. Go on, get out."
…
After adding Rhea Zimmerman on WeChat, Atreus hurried out of Dreamhaven Residence on his little electric scooter.
On the ride back, he barely had his mind on the road.
He had closed a deal.
A big one.
Yet he couldn't feel happy at all.
He felt like he'd betrayed his girlfriend, Lola Lashbrook.
He and Lola had fallen in love in college, practically at first sight. He had even had a chance to study abroad, but for her, he had chosen to stay without hesitation.
Atreus tried not to think about what had happened the night before.
But every time he blinked, those heated, intoxicating flashes surfaced in his mind again. In a daze, he made it back to the office.
By the time he arrived downstairs from Broden, it was already past ten in the morning.
"Zidong, congratulations on closing your first deal!"
Inside the director's office, Drew Sowden wore a bright smile. He didn't even mention that Atreus was late and hadn't clocked in.
Atreus felt awkward under the praise. "I just got lucky."
"That wasn't luck." Drew fixed his gaze on Atreus's handsome face, his eyes shining. "Before you, plenty of people went to Dreamhaven Residence. Not one of them managed to close a deal!"
Atreus had heard things about Dreamhaven Residence before.
That only made him feel even more like he'd stumbled into a miracle…
Drew set the contract down, personally made him a cup of coffee, and placed it in front of him. "Do you know how many households Dreamhaven Residence has?"
Atreus accepted the coffee, thought for a second, and answered, "Three hundred and twelve."
"Correct." Drew's smile grew. "Then do you know what kind of people live in those three hundred and twelve homes?"
"I'm not really sure." Atreus shook his head.
He had gone there on a whim, just to try.
Closing deals in the city was brutal. Too many salespeople fighting over too few clients. That was why he'd set his sights on the biggest villa district outside the city.
The clients were hard to crack, but one signature could feed him for three months.
He'd been rejected so many times he'd nearly gone numb. Success felt great, sure, but failure had become routine.
"Women," Drew said, turning to pull a file from his drawer and tossing it onto the desk. "All women. Dreamhaven Residence is filled with business elites from major corporations, powerhouse executives, and even some top-tier celebrities!"
Atreus flipped through a few pages, surprise flashing in his eyes.
No wonder that villa district felt so quiet during the day, yet stayed spotless. It really was all women.
"If you can open up that market," Drew said, stepping closer, "even making seven figures a year wouldn't be out of reach." He reached up to straighten Atreus's tie, teasing lightly. "By then, maybe you'll even be sitting in my chair."
The fragrance drifting from Drew made Atreus's body tense without him meaning to. "Director Sowden, you're joking…"
