The Road Runner crunched over a carpet of salt-blasted shells and rusted iron filings as they pulled into the ship graveyard. To the left, the skeletal ribs of a dry-docked tanker rose like the carcass of a prehistoric beast; to the right, a graveyard of downed aircraft and shattered tugboats lay half-buried in the shifting sands. The air tasted of brine and oxidation.
