In a secret chamber of the Profound Heaven Sect, an ancient divine hall hovered above Cloud Quinny's head.
A mysterious Primeval Power seeped from the spot between his brows, then slowly flowed into the hall.
Cloud Quinny's face grew paler by the breath. Fine beads of sweat gathered on his forehead. His body trembled harder and harder, as if he were about to fall apart.
On the other side of the hall, a woman stood suspended in midair.
Her black hair spilled like a waterfall, her eyes bright as starlight. A silver moon seemed to crown her, the stars her mantle, as though she had stepped out of some forgotten legend.
Then-
The Primeval Power leaking from Cloud Quinny's brow weakened. His body swayed, barely holding upright.
When he realized he truly could not endure it, he gritted his teeth and cut off the Primeval Power.
The Primeval Deity-Sealing Hall dimmed at once, its radiance snuffed out.
"We're just a little short. Hold on a bit longer and I can reshape the Heaven-Swallowing Divine Vein," the woman told him.
"Hold on any longer and I'll be dead!" Cloud Quinny snapped, glaring at her.
Three months ago, the Primeval Deity-Sealing Hall had opened.
This woman had emerged from within and told him that if he drew out the Primeval Power inside his body and poured it into the Primeval Deity-Sealing Hall, it could reshape the Heaven-Swallowing Divine Vein.
Cloud Quinny had agreed.
The process was agony, like tendons being torn and bones being pulled from his flesh. It hurt so much he could barely breathe.
Worst of all, she had first claimed it would take only about ten days.
Then it became twenty.
Then a month.
Again and again, the deadline shifted.
It dragged on for three full months.
Today should have been finished an hour earlier, but she insisted it still lacked a little more power.
So Cloud Quinny had forced himself to keep releasing Primeval Power.
An hour had passed, and it still was not done.
He had reached his limit.
"Just thirty more breaths," the woman said, her tone firm, as if she were offering mercy. "Endure it, and the Heaven-Swallowing Divine Vein will condense. When it does, it will be yours."
"I won't believe you again." Cloud Quinny clenched his jaw and refused.
The woman's expression turned icy with rage.
"I endured countless ages and gathered enough strength. I finally managed to condense the Heaven-Swallowing Divine Vein inside the Primeval Deity-Sealing Hall for you, and you're telling me you don't want it?"
"Do you have any idea how many would fight to the death the moment the Heaven-Swallowing Divine Vein appeared?"
"Not just people. Even gods would tear each other apart for it."
"And you don't want it?"
She flicked her hand.
A Heaven-Swallowing Divine Vein, glowing with nine-colored light, unfolded before Cloud Quinny. Its pathways mirrored the human meridians exactly, except its surface was covered in ancient patterns.
Each pattern carried an unfathomable, terrifying aura.
Its only flaw was that it had not fully taken shape. It was still missing the final sliver.
Even without understanding the details, Cloud Quinny could tell it was extraordinary. He also knew something like that was not meant for someone as ordinary as him.
She had lied to him too many times.
He would not trust her again.
Cloud Quinny bit down hard, turned his head away, and forced out a single word. "No."
The woman's face hardened.
"I waited through countless ages. I met who knows how many who obtained the Primeval Deity-Sealing Hall, yet only you could open it."
"You are the only one."
"If you give up, the Primeval Deity-Sealing Hall will close again. I don't know how many tens of thousands of years I'll have to wait after that."
"I'll give you three days to think. I'll be here, waiting."
"If you don't come, the Heaven-Swallowing Divine Vein that hasn't fully formed will shatter, and the Primeval Deity-Sealing Hall will fall back into the void."
Cloud Quinny ignored her and withdrew from the Primeval Deity-Sealing Hall at once.
The moment his mind pulled free, he collapsed to the floor and fell asleep.
…
Thump, thump…
A deafening drumbeat rolled through the entire Profound Heaven Sect.
"Eight strikes of the Profound Heaven Drum… something big happened in the sect?" Cloud Quinny jolted awake, frowning.
"Young Master!"
An Inner Sect Disciple rushed in, panic written all over his face. "Disaster! Venerable Beastmaster from the Beast Taming Sect brought eight beast tamer and more than ten thousand demon beast to surround our Profound Heaven Sect!"
Cloud Quinny's expression tightened.
The Myriad Beasts Sect was Lorton's number one sect.
The Profound Heaven Sect was not weak, but it only ranked third in Lorton. Compared to the Myriad Beasts Sect, their strength was on a completely different level.
The Profound Heaven Sect and the Myriad Beasts Sect had always kept to themselves. They rarely interacted, and Profound Heaven Sect disciple never went looking for trouble with them.
So why would Venerable Beastmaster bring people to surround the Profound Heaven Sect?
"Young Master, the Grand Elder and the others already went over," the Inner Sect Disciple said urgently. "They told me to notify you. Stay at your residence and don't go. They'll handle it."
"I'm going to see." Cloud Quinny sprang forward.
"Young Master…" The Inner Sect Disciple did not dare stop him and could only chase after him.
…
At the gates of the Profound Heaven Sect.
The Grand Elder stood at the very front. Behind him, disciples spread out across the area, weapons drawn, holding formation.
A serpent wyrm stretched a hundred zhang long, coiled right at the entrance. Its eyes were cold and predatory as it stared at the Grand Elder and the others, its red tongue flicking in and out.
Black scales shimmered with a chilling sheen.
Venerable Beastmaster sat atop the serpent wyrm's head.
Eight beast tamer rode various demon beast leaders beside him. Behind them, demon beast covered the mountainside like a tide, more than ten thousand in all.
The demon beast roared and howled without end, shaking the sect gates until the very stone seemed to tremble.
The Grand Elder of the Profound Heaven Sect spoke first. "Venerable Beastmaster, our Profound Heaven Sect and your Beast Taming Sect have never held any grudge. You've brought an army to our gates. What do you want?"
"He came to take me," a beautiful, alluring woman in a purple gauze dress said as she stepped out from within the Profound Heaven Sect.
Everyone froze.
How did Luna Lyson have anything to do with Venerable Beastmaster of the Beast Taming Sect?
The Second Elder of the Profound Heaven Sect's face darkened on the spot. "Luna Lyson, you are not only a disciple of the Profound Heaven Sect, you are also the Young Master's fiancée. You contacted the Beast Taming Sect in secret. Does the Young Master know about this?"
"Who I associate with is my freedom," Luna Lyson replied, utterly unconcerned. "What does it have to do with your Profound Heaven Sect, or with Cloud Quinny?"
"Luna Lyson, you are the Young Master's fiancée. You represent the face of the Profound Heaven Sect and the Young Master himself, and you dare say it has nothing to do with him?"
The Second Elder of the Profound Heaven Sect was so furious he raised a hand to punish her, but the Grand Elder stopped him.
"Luna Lyson," the Grand Elder asked, voice heavy, "what exactly are you trying to do?"
"Didn't I just say it?" Luna Lyson swept a glance over the Grand Elder and the others. "My master came to take me to the Beast Taming Sect."
"Your master?" The Grand Elder and the others frowned deeply.
"I've already taken Venerable Beastmaster as my master. Since you're all here, I'll announce it in front of everyone."
"From this moment on, I, Luna Lyson, withdraw from the Profound Heaven Sect."
"And I cancel my marriage contract with Cloud Quinny. From today onward, the Profound Heaven Sect and Cloud Quinny have nothing to do with me."
She pulled out a core disciple robe of the Beast Taming Sect and slipped it on. Then she removed her Profound Heaven Sect identity token, tossed it to the ground, and crushed it under her heel.
The disciples' eyes reddened.
The Elders' faces turned ugly, one after another. If the Grand Elder had not sensed the situation turning volatile and immediately restrained the hot-tempered ones, they might have already led the disciples charging out.
"Luna Lyson, our Young Master has never treated you poorly, and you still do something like this!"
"Two years ago, if the Young Master hadn't saved you outside and brought you back to the Profound Heaven Sect, what right would you have had to become our disciple?"
"You knew the Young Master couldn't hold his liquor. You forced him to drink, and it ended with you spending a night with him. If he hadn't been worried about your reputation, would he have ever decided to marry you?"
"For the past two years, the Young Master provided you with enormous amounts of spiritual medicine. Without it, would you have had the chance to awaken Bloodline Power half a month ago and rise to thirty-eighth on the Lorton Earth Ranking?"
The Third Elder grew angrier with every word.
Without Cloud Quinny's full support and all that spiritual medicine, would Luna Lyson have had any of this?
And yet, the moment she rose, she betrayed Cloud Quinny and the Profound Heaven Sect.
Faced with the Third Elder's accusations, Luna Lyson did not show the slightest shame. She laughed, cold and mocking. "Third Elder, don't you think what you're saying is ridiculous?"
"Cloud Quinny gave me spiritual medicine because he wanted to. I didn't force him."
"Besides, I was his fiancée. Enjoying the resources he and the Profound Heaven Sect provided was only natural."
"And you?" She lifted her chin. "What right do you have to lecture me?"
The Third Elder's face turned livid.
The Grand Elder stayed calm. He looked at Luna Lyson and said, "Cloud Quinny is the Young Master of the Profound Heaven Sect, the future successor to the Sect Master."
"If you married him, you would become the future Sect Master's wife. That status is not low. Yet you chose to join the Beast Taming Sect. I truly can't understand what you were thinking."
Luna Lyson glanced at him and sneered. "Grand Elder, if it were you, would you willingly marry that trash, Cloud Quinny?"
"Cloud Quinny's talent is mediocre. Without the Profound Heaven Sect's resources and support, he might not even break into the Energy Refining Realm."
"Even if he takes over as Sect Master in the future, he'll still be nothing but trash."
"And the Profound Heaven Sect might rank third in Lorton, but its foundation is too shallow. It only has eighteen years of history."
"Compared to the number one sect, the Beast Taming Sect, founded two hundred years ago, you're inferior in both strength and heritage by far more than a little."
"I, Luna Lyson, am a chosen genius. I'll go much farther in the future. Why would I let your Profound Heaven Sect and that trash Young Master drag me down?"
The Grand Elder's expression sank.
The other Elders looked ready to explode. If the Grand Elder had not held them back, they would have already stormed forward.
"Luna," Venerable Beastmaster said, his gaze full of disdain as it swept across the Profound Heaven Sect, "are you done? If you are, we should leave. We still have to hurry back to the Beast Taming Sect."
"Yes, master." Luna Lyson hurried to follow.
"Who said you could just leave?"
Cloud Quinny walked in with a frost-cold face, and the disciples of the Profound Heaven Sect quickly parted to make a path.
