On the fifth anniversary of our wedding, Benedict Cole and I had made plans to go out for dinner that evening and celebrate.
I was about to leave when nanny Zimmerman called. My mom had a bad case of diarrhea and was so weak she could barely stand.
Benedict had already pulled the car over. I hurried into the passenger seat and was just about to tell him to drive to the hospital when he spoke first.
"Mandy, I just got a call. An important client has returned to the country and wants me to pick them up at the airport."
His voice was hurried and apologetic. The message was clear enough: this was a client he couldn't afford to offend, so he had to leave immediately. Dinner was off.
A taxi happened to stop a short distance ahead. I was desperate to get to the hospital.
"Sure. Go handle your business."
I climbed out, shut the door, and ran toward the taxi. Its passenger happened to get out as I reached it. The moment the cab was empty, I slipped inside, my palms slick with sweat.
"Driver, Provincial Hospital."
The doctor diagnosed my mom with chronic colitis. After all the tests were finished and I picked up her medication, we finally made it home. It was almost midnight.
Once I had coaxed my mom to sleep, I asked aunt Zimmerman to make me a bowl of noodles.
I had barely taken one bite when a friend of Benedict's called to say that Benedict was drunk and asked me to come pick him up.
I followed the address to a bar in the city center. Benedict was in one of the private rooms.
He had an arm around a woman and was leaning close to speak with her. They looked intimate, and he kept calling her "Vivian."
My name was Mandy Yale. There wasn't even a "Vivian" in it.
Vivian. Vivian Sabey.
Vivian Sabey was Benedict's cherished unattainable first love. He had fallen for her in high school, but sadly, he had never managed to win her over.
Vivian had never thought much of him. She had married a wealthy heir from the north, though they had divorced a few years ago.
I heard she had gone overseas to build a career after the divorce.
So that was who Benedict's important client was.
Well, look at that. I had finally met the legendary unattainable first love. How exciting!
