The smell of disinfectant in the hospital hallway was sharp and overwhelming, like invisible needles piercing my nose and stabbing into my heart.
I stared at yet another overdue medical bill in my hand, the numbers on it searing into my fingertips like a branding iron. My brother Benjamin lay in the ICU, as pale as a sheet of paper. Expensive machines kept his fragile life hanging by a thread. The doctor had warned me: without the next phase of advanced treatment, he wouldn’t survive the month.
Money. I needed an astronomical amount of money.
“Miss Leah Green?” A man in an expensive suit appeared before me. His voice was steady, mechanical, devoid of warmth. “Perhaps we could discuss the matter of your brother’s medical expenses.”
I looked at him warily. “Who are you?”
He handed me a business card. It bore only an intricate emblem and a single gold-embossed phone number. “I represent my employer, Mr. Caleb. He has taken… an interest in you. This is an agreement that might resolve your current predicament.”
He extended a heavy document toward me. The cover was marked with several Latin words in gold lettering. I couldn’t understand them, but the cold, ancient aura emanating from the document hit me like a gust of icy wind.
My hands trembled as I opened it. The pages were packed with dense legal terms, but the essence was brutally simple: I, Leah Green, voluntarily agree to become Mr. Caleb’s “contracted companion” for a term of three years.
During this period, I was to obey his commands completely and fulfill all “companion duties.” In return, he would cover all of Benjamin’s medical expenses and ensure the best possible treatment.
“What… what does ‘companion duties’ mean?” My voice was dry and cracked.
The man adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. His gaze behind the lenses was emotionless, unreadable. “It means fulfilling all of Mr. Caleb’s needs. This includes, but is not limited to, accompanying him, attending events, and alleviating a particular… condition he suffers from.”
A particular condition? My stomach sank.
“And Mr. Caleb… who is he?”
A faint, almost imperceptible curve touched the lawyer’s lips. It was a smile that bordered on pity. “Someone beyond your imagination. Sign it, and your brother will live. Don’t sign…” He paused, his voice chilling. “And you can both wait for your death.”
Wait for our death.
Those four words hit me like a hammer, shattering any hesitation and pride I had left.
I glanced at the ICU, at my brother’s peaceful, sleeping face. Memories of my parents’ last words to me resurfaced. I was his only sister. I was all he had.
Tears welled up without warning, dripping onto the contract and smudging the ink.
I would trade my freedom for your life. For you, it’s worth it.
My hand trembled so badly that I could barely hold the pen. The tip hovered over the signature line, feeling impossibly heavy. Finally, with all the strength I could muster, I pressed the pen down and etched my name as though carving it into stone.
Leah Green.
In that moment, I sold myself to a man named Caleb. This exorbitant contract had just purchased my future.
