Chapter 1

My sister and I had to choose our marriage partners. She was quick to claim the noble fire dragon, leaving me to marry the savage werewolf. Unexpectedly, not long after the wedding, the fire dragon met a tragic end. My sister lost her backer and was bullied by others. Meanwhile, the werewolf, with his cleverness and business acumen, quickly amassed a fortune. Consumed by hatred, my sister stabbed me to death during a sacrificial ceremony. When I opened my eyes, I found myself back on the day we were to choose our marriage partners. But this time, my sister reached out and took the werewolf’s hand first. At that moment, I realized she had been reborn, too. What she didn’t know, however, was the werewolf’s true nature—brutal and violent, resolving every issue with his fists. … In the grand family hall, I stared coldly at my sister across from me. Her face was brimming with excitement. “Mother, the moment I saw Shamar, I fell in love with him! Please, grant me this union!” My mother’s expression darkened. “The werewolf pack is infamous for its barbarity, and he’s penniless. Marrying him will only bring you suffering!” Although we were both her daughters, my mother had always favored Angela. She would never let her beloved child endure hardship. When Angela heard our mother’s refusal, she became hysterical. “I must marry him! If you don’t agree, I’ll end my life right here and now!” My mother was so terrified by her outburst that she nearly fainted. She quickly relented. Seeing Angela’s triumphant smile, I was certain she, too, had been reborn. In our past lives, she had chosen Reynaldo, the noble fire dragon, forcing me to marry Shamar and move to the desolate wilderness. I managed our household and used my dowry to support his business ventures. Shamar didn’t fail me. He seized opportunities and became incredibly wealthy. But the fire dragon clan was plagued by constant war. Reynaldo went to battle and died on the battlefield. Angela became a widow, and her assets were plundered by relatives. She lived a miserable life. She blamed me, believing I had stolen the prosperous life that should have been hers. During a sacrificial ceremony, she lured me away and stabbed me to death in a frenzy. “If I can’t live a prosperous life, neither can you!” she screamed, her bloodshot, crazed eyes still vivid in my memory. My fists clenched instinctively. Since she was so eager to walk into hell herself, I saw no reason to stop her. “If my sister loves Shamar so much, I’m willing to step aside.” Angela’s excitement was nearly overflowing. She could already see a life of luxury beckoning her. “Maggie, if it weren’t for your sister’s selflessness, you’d never have had such a good match. You should thank her!” my mother scolded me. Having stolen what was mine, they now expected gratitude from me. Shameless. “There’s no need for thanks. It’s only right for an elder sister to yield to her younger sibling,” Angela replied coolly. Angela couldn’t contain her eagerness and soon dashed off to the werewolf pack to discuss the wedding. My mother smiled indulgently but dropped her grin the moment her eyes met mine. “You know the family’s situation. There’s only enough for one dowry,” she said. “Your sister’s married life with the werewolf pack will be difficult. If I don’t offer her extra support, she won’t survive.” I immediately understood what she meant and couldn’t help but let out a cold laugh. In our past lives, when Angela married into the fire dragon clan, my mother had framed it differently. “The fire dragon clan is so distinguished. If we don’t send a sizable dowry, she’ll be looked down upon.” It was clear—no matter the circumstances, Angela’s dowry was never meant for me. But I didn’t mind. “Whatever you decide, Mother,” I replied obediently. Surprised by my compliance, Mother seemed momentarily embarrassed. She slipped off a bracelet and handed it to me. “This bracelet was given to me by your grandmother when I got married. I’m passing it to you now as a token.” When Angela learned I was to marry Reynaldo, she laughed until her sides hurt. “Sister, you’re so lucky! Reynaldo is a nobleman with stunning looks—the dream man of countless women. You’re marrying him, so you’re bound to live a life of ease!” “But I’ve heard the fire dragon clan is often at war. Be careful. You wouldn’t want to become a widow after just a few good days,” she added, her words dripping with malice. The thought of me soon becoming a widow seemed to bring her immense satisfaction. Meanwhile, she could revel in dreams of wealth and indulgence. What she didn’t know was that while Shamar was brilliant, he was also a brute. In our past lives, he used violence to deal with his dissatisfaction, beating me until my body was covered in bruises. It wasn’t until I revealed all my business secrets to him that he succeeded and finally stopped tormenting me. I wondered if, in this life, Angela—without my knowledge of commerce—could escape his abuse.
