Chapter 1

My phone rang just as I finished packing the last box. I didn't bother checking the caller's ID before receiving the call since I already knew who it was. My hands weren't shaking, but my heart was racing. “Everything’s ready,” a calm voice said on the other end. “The paperwork is done. The car will be at the back gate in ten minutes. After tonight… you’ll be officially dead.” I closed my eyes for a moment, took deep breath and nodded in agreement. This is it. I couldn't help but wonder if anyone's going to miss me or even notice my absence. “Thank you,” I whispered. After the call ended, a heavy silence settled in the room, and memories came rushing in. My mind raced back to a week ago. Every pack members had gathered in the general meeting hall—the Alpha’s monthly address, they called it. Everyone stood proud and tall except me. Because I was the Omega. The weakling. The late bloomer. The girl whose wolf was still silent. Since I rarely speak with anyone in the pack, they concluded that I was deaf and dumb, too. So they never filter their words whenever they spoke in front of me. Like usual, the murmurs began. “She’s so useless. What a waste of space. Who even keeps an Omega like her around?” “Honestly, she's the weakest Omega I've seen. I heard she can’t even shift yet.” “She doesn't deserve to be the alpha's mate, in fact she's not fit to be anyone's mare. But I know that sooner or later, the Alpha will find a better Luna.” My fingers curled tight around my dress. My wolf stirred deep inside me, restless, but still not strong enough to break free. I stood near the back, where I could see everyone's expression and hear every word clearly. But I wish I hadn’t. “She’s not even good for breeding,” someone muttered with a laugh. A sting hit my eyes, but I tried my best not to cry as I blinked my tears away. I just stood there, frozen, listening. And then… I heard his voice from behind me. The authoritative voice of the Alpha. My mate. “You should keep your voice down,” he snapped… but there was no anger in his voice. Only a hint of amusement and pure mockery. His words seemed to trigger their laughter, some people even dared pointing fingers at me openly as they laughed. Then he walked inside the hall and sat on his designated seat with his mistress sitting beside him. Vanessa. She was dressed in a luxurious red silk and she fitted perfectly beside him, as if she's meant to be the luna. She smiled up at him, eyes glowing with triumph. Looking in his eyes, she asked him something. Although I didn't hear her clearly, but judging from the shape of her mouth, she had asked him. "You love me, right?" “Don’t worry,” he whispered to her. “You're the one I love. Not her.” Something inside me cracked. Quietly. No sound, no scream. Just pain. Betrayal. They thought I didn't hear any of it. They thought I was dumb and weak. They were wrong. Tonight, I would die in their eyes. And when I return… I’d make sure they knew exactly what kind of monster they created.
