Chapter 1: The Awakening

The first sign that something was terribly wrong was the silence.
It was a silence that felt heavy, thick enough to swallow the usual comforting sounds of our home—the hum of the refrigerator, the distant city traffic, the soft click-clackof Silver’s claws on the hardwood floor as he followed me from room to room. For ten years, since the night I found a shivering, silver-furred wolf pup abandoned in a rain-soaked alley, that sound had been the rhythm of my life. My son’s footsteps.
But tonight, on the eve of what I considered his eighteenth birthday, the silence was deafening.
“Silver?” I called out, wiping my hands on a dish towel. I’d just finished preparing his favorite meal—a rare steak, seared perfectly, just the way his… particular… palate preferred. “Dinner’s ready.”
No eager padding of feet. No warm, furry head bumping against my leg in thanks. A knot of unease tightened in my stomach. He’d been restless all day, his brilliant blue eyes—so human-like in his wolfish face—shadowed with a tension I couldn’t place. I’d chalked it up to growing pains, some canine equivalent of teenage angst. But this felt different.
I found him in the living room, lying not on his usual comfortable dog bed, but pressed into the farthest corner, half-hidden in the shadows. The setting sun cast long, ominous streaks of orange through the window, glinting off his magnificent silver coat. He was panting, his sides heaving, and a low, continuous growl rumbled in his chest. It wasn’t a sound of aggression directed at me; it was a sound of pure, unadulterated agony.
“Silver!” I rushed to his side, my maternal instincts overriding any flicker of fear. I dropped to my knees, my hands reaching for him. “What’s wrong, baby? Are you hurt?”
The moment my fingers brushed against the fur on his neck, his entire body seized.
A jolt, like a bolt of pure, white-hot lightning, shot up my arm and exploded in my chest. It wasn’t painful, not exactly. It was… overwhelming. A tidal wave of sensation—heat, longing, a terrifying, primal sense of rightnessthat stole my breath.
Silver recoiled as if burned. He scrambled backward, knocking over a side table with a crash. When he turned to look at me, his eyes were no longer the familiar blue. They glowed with an unearthly, molten gold.
‘Mine.’
The word didn’t echo in the room. It echoed insidemy head. A deep, guttural, possessive voice that was both utterly alien and hauntingly familiar. It was Silver’s essence, but amplified a thousand times, layered with an ancient, predatory power that made my blood run cold even as it set my nerves on fire.
Fear, sharp and immediate, finally pierced my concern. I stared at the magnificent, terrifying creature in my living room, a being I had bottle-fed and cuddled and loved for a decade. This was not my son. This was something else entirely.
“S-Silver?” I whispered, my voice trembling.
He let out a heart-wrenching whine, a sound of such profound conflict that it shattered the terrifying moment. The golden glow in his eyes flickered, replaced by a glimpse of the familiar blue, filled with a panic and a shame that mirrored my own. Then, with a powerful surge of muscle, he turned and fled, a silver blur crashing through the dog flap and into the deepening twilight of the backyard.
I was left alone on the floor, surrounded by the wreckage of the overturned table, the scent of his fear and something else—something wild and electric—hanging in the air. My skin still tingled where I had touched him. The echo of that single, psychic word—‘Mine’—reverberated in my soul.
What had just happened? What was happening to my boy?
And why, beneath the layers of shock and fear, did a treacherous, forbidden part of me feel… awakened?
