The air in the underground auction house was thick with the scent of old money, blood, and desperation. I sat in the secluded VIP gallery, a glass of vintage crimson wine untouched in my hand, my gaze sweeping over the crowd of my peers with detached boredom. Another night, another display of power and acquisition. As a Vampire Countess, these events were a tiresome but necessary part of maintaining appearances.
“Next lot,” the auctioneer’s voice boomed, “a prime specimen of the Lycanthrope breed. Captured from the northern packs. Young, strong, and brimming with fight. Perfect for security, manual labor… or sport.” A cruel chuckle rippled through the audience.
My eyes, almost against my will, were drawn to the iron cage being wheeled onto the stage. Inside, a man stood tall, his wrists shackled. Even in the dim light, I could see the powerful lines of his body, the defiant set of his jaw. Dirt and dried blood smeared his skin, but they couldn't conceal the raw, untamed power radiating from him. He was shirtless, revealing a map of old scars and taut muscle. This was no ordinary wolf.
But it was his eyes that arrested me. As the spotlight hit him, he didn't cower. Instead, his gaze—a startling, fierce gold—swept across the leering crowd with a contempt that mirrored my own. And for a single, heart-stopping moment, those golden eyes locked with mine.
A jolt, sharp and inexplicable, shot through my cold, undead heart. It wasn't pain. It was… a spark. A flicker of heat in the perpetual winter of my existence. My fingers tightened around the stem of my glass. What was that?
“Do we have an opening bid?” the auctioneer prompted.
“Fifty thousand!” a portly Duke shouted, his eyes gleaming with morbid curiosity.
“Seventy-five!” another countered.
I remained silent, watching the beast in the cage. He ignored the bids, his focus still unnervingly fixed on me. It was as if he could see through my icy facade, through the centuries of practiced control, to the hollow core beneath. It was insolent. It was unacceptable.
And it was the most alive I had felt in a hundred years.
“Going once for two hundred thousand…” the auctioneer called.
A strange, possessive impulse seized me. This creature, this defiant wolf, should not be a plaything for these decadent fools. He was too… proud. To see him broken would be a waste. Or perhaps, a darker part of me whispered, Iwanted to be the one to break him.
My voice cut through the murmur, cold and clear as shattering crystal. “Five hundred thousand.”
A collective gasp filled the room. It was an exorbitant sum for a single slave, even one of his caliber. The other bidders fell silent, yielding to my wealth and status. The auctioneer’s gavel fell with a definitive crack. “Sold! To the Lady Alexia of House Nocturne!”
I didn't wait for the formalities. I rose, my black silk gown whispering against the floor, and left the gallery without a backward glance. But the image of those golden eyes, burning with hatred and something else… something akin to recognition, was seared into my mind.
Back at my estate, the imposing stone manor felt emptier than usual. I gave orders for the new slave to be cleaned, chained in the dungeons, and brought before me at dawn. The night stretched before me, interminable. I tried to read, to attend to correspondence, but my thoughts were a chaotic whirl. That jolt. That spark. It was a weakness, an anomaly. I, Alexia, who had turned away suitors from the most powerful vampire houses, was unsettled by a filthy wolf slave.
It means nothing,I told myself, pacing the length of my opulent bedroom. He is a tool. An asset. A dangerous pet to be controlled.
Yet, as the moon reached its zenith, a restless energy pulled at me. I found my feet carrying me down the cold, spiral staircase, deep into the bowels of the manor where the dungeons lay. The guards bowed and opened the heavy iron door without question.
The air down here was damp and smelled of straw and rust. Torches flickered on the walls, casting dancing shadows. He was there, in the largest cell, his shackles bolted to the wall. They had hosed him down. The grime was gone, revealing sun-kissed skin and dark, unruly hair. In the dim light, he looked more like a captured king than a slave. He was awake, his head lifted, watching my approach with that same unnerving stillness.
I stopped before the bars, my arms crossed, a mask of cold indifference firmly in place. “Comfortable?” I asked, my voice dripping with sarcasm.
He said nothing. His gaze traveled over me, from the intricate silver combs in my hair to the hem of my night-robe, as if assessing a potential threat. The silence stretched, thick and heavy. The spark I’d felt earlier returned, a low hum under my skin, a magnetic pull towards the bars.
“You will learn obedience here,” I continued, unnerved by his silence. “You are my property now. Your life, your breath, belongs to me.”
Finally, he spoke, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated through the stone floor and straight into my bones. “My body may be your prisoner, Countess. But my will is not.”
The audacity. The sheer, unadulterated defiance. Anger, hot and sharp, flared within me. But beneath the anger, that treacherous spark flared brighter, hotter. This close to him, the air seemed to crackle. I could almost taste his wild scent—pine and snow and pure, untamed power. It should have been repulsive. It was anything but.
I took a step closer to the bars, my own predatory nature rising to the surface. “We shall see about that,” I whispered, the promise of a challenge in my eyes.
For a long moment, we simply stared at each other, predator and predator, vampire and wolf, locked in a silent battle of wills across the cold iron bars. The connection between us was a live wire, terrifying and irresistible. I saw the same conflict reflected in his golden eyes: hatred, defiance, and a flicker of that same undeniable pull.
I was the first to break. With a swirl of my robe, I turned and walked away, my heart pounding in a rhythm it hadn't known for centuries. As I climbed the stairs, leaving the dungeon and its dangerous occupant behind, one thought echoed in my mind, a silent admission of my own undoing:
A beast, indeed. But what does that make me, for wanting to tame him?
