Chapter 2: The Bond's Agony

Words : 0 Updated : Nov 2nd, 2026
The Great Hall of the Silvermane pack was a place of solemn power, but tonight it felt like a cage. The torches cast long, dancing shadows that seemed to mock me. Every face turned towards me was a mask of expectation and shared pain. I stood before the Elder Council, my father’s empty throne a stark reminder of why we were here. Lyra and Rylan stood slightly behind me, a silent show of support, but I felt utterly alone. “The scout was Kaelen,” I announced, my voice echoing in the hushed hall. “I am certain of it.” A wave of angry murmurs and sharp intakes of breath rippled through the assembled Betas. The name ‘Kaelen’ was a curse here, a synonym for betrayal. “After five years… the traitor dares to show his face on our lands?” Elder Fenris, a wolf whose ambition was barely concealed behind a veneer of wisdom, stood. His son, Theron, watched me with keen interest from his side. “This is an outrage! A declaration of war!” “We must hunt him down!” another Elder cried out. “He must pay for our fallen Alpha’s blood!” The chorus of agreement was deafening. This was the reaction I had known would come. This was the justice I had sworn to deliver. So why did my stomach churn? Why did the thought of leading that hunt make a cold sweat break out on my skin? He is your Mate,a small, traitorous voice—my wolf, Luna—whispered inside. Our other half. He is a murderer,I snarled back internally. He betrayed Father. He betrayed us all. The conflict was a physical ache, a dull throb that had started in my temples the moment Kaelen disappeared from my sight. With every hour that passed, the pain grew. A constant, low-grade headache that pulsed in time with my heartbeat. The first sign of the Bond’s price for separation. The medical texts called it the ‘Longing Ache’. I called it torture. “Elara,” Lyra’s voice was a soft touch in my mind through the pack link, meant for me alone. “You’re pale. Are you well?” “I’m fine,”I lied, cutting the link abruptly. I couldn’t explain this. How could I? To confess the Bond was to confess a weakness, a vulnerability tied directly to our greatest enemy. It would shatter their faith in me as Guardian. Theron stepped forward, his voice smooth as oil. “Elara faced him directly. Her courage is unquestionable. But perhaps the shock of seeing the traitor after so long has… unsettled her.” His eyes scanned me, too perceptive. “We should act, but with a clear head. I will lead the hunting party. We will find this snake and bring him to justice.” Pride warred with a strange, possessive panic inside me. No. Not him. Not Theron. The thought of Theron’s hands on Kaelen sent a surge of irrational fury through me. It was the Bond, I knew, this primal, stupid instinct to protect what was mine, even if minewas a monster. “Thank you, Theron,” I said, my voice tighter than I intended. “But as Guardian, the responsibility is mine. I will find him.” The words felt like ash in my mouth. A vow I had to keep, yet one that now felt like a sentence. The council dissolved into plans and strategies, but I barely heard them. The thrumming in my skull was a relentless drumbeat, a siren’s call pulling me east, towards the forbidden mountains where the Bloodfang roamed. It was a physical pull, a taut string connected to my sternum, yanking me towards the man I despised. That night, sleep was impossible. The ache had spread to my bones, a deep, grinding weakness that made my muscles feel heavy. I paced my chambers, the silvery light of the moon doing nothing to soothe the fire under my skin. I was a live wire, every nerve screaming in protest at the distance between me and my Mate. And then, as the moon reached its zenith, a wave of emotion that was not my own crashed into me. It was a desolate, crushing grief. So profound and sharp it stole my breath, bringing hot, unexpected tears to my eyes. It was followed by a surge of bitter regret, so potent it felt like a physical blow. I stumbled, gripping the windowsill for support, my heart aching with a pain that was not mine. Kaelen. The realization was a shock. This was coming from him. Through the Bond. In the silence of the night, across the miles that separated us, his carefully constructed walls had crumbled, and his true feelings had bled through to me. No,I thought, furious at my own body’s reaction, at the sympathy that unwound in my chest. This is a trick. A manipulation. He’s a traitor. He feels nothing. But the emotion felt raw. Real. It felt like the echo of my own grief for my father, twisted with a layer of self-loathing I couldn’t comprehend. Why?The question was a silent scream in my mind. Why do you regret it, if you chose it? What happened that night? The pain in my head spiked, a sharp, stabbing sensation that made me gasp. It was the Bond, punishing me for the distance, for the conflict. My body was a battleground, and I was losing. I wanted to hate him. I needed to hate him. It was the only thing that had kept me going for five years. But as his ghost of regret washed over me again, a treacherous part of me, the part that was still the young girl who had admired him, wanted to reach back. To offer comfort. I slammed my mental shields down, locking the emotions out, building a wall of pure, cold anger around my heart. It was the only way to survive this. I looked out at the moon, my reflection pale and strained in the glass. “I will find you, Kaelen,” I whispered to the night, my voice trembling with a mixture of rage and a pain I would never admit. “But I don’t know if I’ll kill you for what you did… or for what you’re making me feel.”
