Five years as his secret wife.
One ultrasound hidden in my clutch.
Three hundred guests in the Valenti ballroom.
And my husband raised his champagne to announce his engagement—
to another woman.
He looked straight at me when he said her name.
"Katya Volkova," Matteo Valenti said, his voice rolling over the room like thunder. "My future wife. And the future of Chicago."
Applause exploded.
I didn't clap. I couldn't. My fingers had locked around my clutch so hard the clasp cut into my palm.
Inside it was a grainy black-and-white photo. A tiny flicker of a heartbeat. Eight weeks old.
I'd planned to give it to him tonight. Our anniversary. Five years since a priest married us in a candlelit chapel at 2 AM, with only his enforcer Rocco as a witness. Matteo had kissed my ring finger and whispered, "Nobody touches what's mine."
His text this afternoon had made my heart race: Ballroom. 9 PM. Wear the black dress.
I thought he was finally going to tell the world.
He did. Just not about me.
Katya glided to his side. Platinum hair. Ice-blue eyes. The Bratva's crown jewel. She kissed him on the mouth.
He let her.
Then her gaze slid across the room and landed on me. Slow. Knowing. Like she already knew exactly who I was.
Someone bumped my shoulder. "Doc, you okay? You look pale."
Doc. That's what the family called me. Ava Russo, the Valenti family surgeon. The woman who dug bullets out of his soldiers at 3 AM. Who stitched Matteo's chest back together twice.
Who slept in his bed every night he came home.
"Fine," I lied.
I found him an hour later in his study, pouring bourbon like nothing had happened.
"Tell me I misheard." My voice shook. "Tell me this is strategy—"
"It is strategy." He didn't turn around. "Ivan Volkov controls the ports. This marriage gives me the East Coast."
"You're already married. To ME."
Finally, he looked at me. There was nothing in his eyes. Nothing at all.
"Ava." He said it gently, the way you'd tell a child her dog was dead. "That marriage was never registered. The priest was paid. There's no record. There never was."
The floor tilted.
"No. You put your mother's ring on my finger. You said—"
"I said what you needed to hear." He sipped his bourbon. "You were useful. Loyal. Good in bed. Don't make it more than it was."
Useful.
Five years, and I was useful.
"I love you," I whispered. It came out like begging. I hated myself for it.
"Then you'll understand." He set the glass down. "The Volkovs can't know about you. You move out of the main house tonight. You stay on as family physician. And you keep your mouth shut."
"And if I don't?"
He stepped closer. His hand came up to my throat. Not squeezing. Just resting there. Reminding me.
"Then your brother's debt comes due. Leo stole two hundred grand from me, piccola. The only reason he's still breathing is you. Don't make me forget that."
There it was. The leash. It had always been there. I'd just called it love.
I stepped back until his hand fell away. "Happy anniversary, Matteo."
Something flickered across his face. Gone before I could name it.
I didn't cry in the hallway. I didn't cry in the car.
I cried on my knees in my apartment, holding our framed marriage certificate. Then I held a lighter to its corner and watched five years curl black.
Ash in thirty seconds.
I called the only person outside his reach.
"Aunt Lucia? I need to disappear. New name. New country. Can you do it in seven days?"
A long silence. "Is it him?"
"He's marrying the Volkov girl." I pressed my palm flat against my stomach. "And he can never, ever find out what I'm taking with me."
At 3 AM, my phone lit up. Unknown number.
A photo: Matteo and Katya in the back of his car. Her hand on his thigh. His mother's ring—MY ring—glittering on her finger.
Then a second message.
Congratulations on the baby, Doctor. Shame it won't live to be born.
