The year our son Hunter turned five, Caleb stood me up for the 99th time, failing to show up at the civil registry office to marry me.
I didn't question him. I didn't argue.
Because I had already decided to find our son a new father.
......
Sylvia waited all day at the civil registry office, only to receive a text from Caleb in the end. [Something came up at the airline. Next time.]
She stared at those words for a few seconds. She didn't ask what happened, didn't call him. Instead, she opened her memo app and added another check-mark—the 99th time. In five years, Caleb had broken his promise 99 times. There wouldn't be a 100th.
Calmly, Sylvia put away her phone and left. When she arrived at the kindergarten, her son Hunter had just finished school. "Mom!" Hunter's eyes lit up when he saw her. He ran over and threw himself into her arms.
Sylvia was warmed by his smile and smiled back. "Were you good at kindergarten today?"
Hunter nodded firmly. "I was the best!"
"Then Mommy will buy you your favorite strawberry cake tonight."
"Yay!"
Sylvia smiled and held his hand as they walked toward the car. Suddenly, Hunter tugged her sleeve. "Mom, that little girl is new in our class today. Her name is Luna."
Sylvia followed his gaze and saw the little girl happily run into the arms of a tall man, calling out sweetly, "Daddy!"
Next to the man stood a woman in a red dress with wavy hair. The three of them chatted and laughed as they got into the car. To anyone watching, they looked like a happy family. But the man was Caleb—Sylvia's fiancé, Hunter's father. The woman was also someone Sylvia recognized: Vanessa, Caleb's first love. Watching the car drive away, Sylvia slowly clenched her free hand, afraid to meet Hunter's gaze. How could she explain to her child that his father was with another family?
Hunter looked up at Sylvia, his clear eyes blinking. "Mom, why is Daddy someone else's daddy? Is that why he doesn't let me call him Daddy in public?"
Sylvia's heart ached at his questions. Caleb was the youngest golden pilot at Horizon Airlines—talented, handsome, and admired by many. Sylvia, his junior from high school, had had a crush on him for years. At their fifth-year alumni reunion, one reckless night led to an unexpected pregnancy and their son Hunter. Caleb said he loved children and asked her to keep the baby. He promised to marry her and build a family.
But the wedding never happened. The marriage registration kept getting postponed. He even used their unmarried status as an excuse to keep their relationship private, forbidding Hunter from calling him "Daddy" outside. Sylvia had tolerated it all for love, but now Hunter was suffering too......
She clenched her hand, swallowing the bitterness in her throat. Kneeling down, she forced a smile and was about to comfort Hunter when he said: "Mom, I don't want a daddy anymore. Is that okay?"
Sylvia was stunned. Children say what they mean, and she knew Hunter was serious. Her heart broke for him as she hugged her son tightly. "Okay." It's said that a mother and son share one heart—and she felt exactly the same.
That night, after putting Hunter to sleep, Sylvia received a new WhatsApp friend request. [Vanessa.]
She accepted, and a voice message immediately came through. Vanessa's voice sounded pitiful: "Caleb, I know you still have feelings for me. Otherwise, you would've married Sylvia in these five years. You just wanted to make me come back, right? Now that I'm back, let's be together again, okay?"
Caleb didn't respond, but after five years together, Sylvia instantly recognized his increasingly heavy breathing. The next moment, the sound of passionate kissing filled the audio. The recording ended abruptly.
Just then, the door opened downstairs. Sylvia turned off her phone and walked out, standing on the stairs between the first and second floors. The lights turned on. Their eyes met. Caleb showed no guilt. Instead, he walked toward her with open arms, trying to hug her as usual: "Sorry, babe. I was too busy today. Let's reschedule the registration another time."
Sylvia subtly avoided his embrace. "You must be exhausted. Go take a shower and rest."
Caleb paused, sensing something unusual about her today. But he didn't overthink it and went to shower with a smile.
Listening to the sound of running water, Sylvia felt nothing but coldness and irony.
Flying all day, juggling two women and a child at night—no wonder he's tired. It's true—life is easier for men. They can have a wife and child yet still act like carefree boys. She returned to the bedroom, opened her laptop, first sent an electronic resignation letter to the hospital director, then accepted an offer from Harvard Medical School to continue her studies. The reporting date was in two weeks—enough time to get passports for herself and her son and say goodbye to Caleb for good.
She picked up an eyebrow pencil and forcefully drew a cross on the wall calendar. "Caleb, out of all the people in the world, you chose to ruin me...... But my life will never be destroyed by a man."
