When Hargrove Myers was on the brink of death from liver failure, Tia Brown didn’t hesitate. She walked into the operating room and donated half of her liver to save him.
Watching the man she loved lying in his hospital bed, his vitals stabilizing and his life no longer in danger, she felt it was all worth it.
But then, by chance, she discovered something shocking. A nurse was cutting the liver that had just been taken from her into small pieces and feeding it to stray cats.
Enraged, Tia stormed over and demanded an explanation. "Who gave you the right to do this? How could you be so careless? That liver was meant to save Hargrove Myers' life! Without it, he would die!"
The nurse, flustered, replied, "I was just following Mr. Myers' instructions."
Tia couldn’t believe it. Grabbing the nurse by the arm, she dragged her to Hargrove Myers’ room to confront him. But as she approached the door, she heard laughter from inside.
"That Tia Brown is so gullible," someone said, laughing. "Hargrove just made a joke, and she rushed to donate her liver without a second thought."
"Is it really that surprising? It’s not the first time. Last time, it was a kidney. The time before that, a cornea. And in the beginning, it was bone marrow. Every time, she believed him without question and just gave it away."
"What should we take from her next? Does she even have anything left to give?"
"Let’s take more of her liver. The stray cats seem to enjoy it."
"Just leave enough for her to stay alive. If she dies, Hargrove won’t be able to continue his revenge."
"All of this because she gave Hargrove cookies in front of May, and May saw it. Hargrove had been in love with May for so many years, and he was so close to being with her. But because of Tia Brown’s little act, May left him and went abroad."
"Exactly. May said she’d only come back if Hargrove proved he had no feelings for Tia Brown. After all this, she should believe him now, right?"
"If not, we’ll just keep taking from Tia until May is convinced."
"But doesn’t Tia have nothing left to give?"
"Then we’ll just drain her blood. Pour it down the drain and let the rats and cockroaches feast on it."
The laughter and mockery in the room sent a chill through Tia’s entire body.
She had thought her sacrifice was saving the man she loved. But all of this was just a ploy to win back May Cross?
Through the small window in the door, she saw it clearly. Hargrove Myers, who moments ago had been pale and frail, was now standing with his arms crossed, smiling as he chatted with his friends. He wasn’t sick at all.
He had faked everything—lying in the hospital bed, pretending to be on the verge of death—just to manipulate her into donating her organs, over and over again, to prove to May that he didn’t care about Tia.
Tia could barely process everything she had just heard. The nurse, breaking free from her grip, stammered, "You heard it all, didn’t you? It really was Mr. Myers who told me to do it. Please don’t report me. I’ll lose my job!"
Tia raised her hand slightly, her voice calm. "Go."
The root of this cruelty was Hargrove Myers. She had no intention of blaming a nurse who was just following orders.
But the absurdity of it all crushed her.
The years they had spent together, the kindness and care Hargrove had shown her, were all an act. A ruse to make her willingly sacrifice her body for him.
Her liver had been cut, but what hurt more was her heart.
Clutching her chest, she slid down the wall, biting her lip to keep from crying out loud. Her body trembled as she sobbed, her tears falling to the floor and blurring her vision.
"Hargrove, I’ve sent the video of you feeding the stray cats to May," someone said cheerfully inside the room.
"Did she reply?" Hargrove asked.
"She sent back an 'OK.'"
The group erupted in celebration.
"May must be satisfied now, right? Hargrove, you’ve finally gotten through to her!"
The sound of a ringing phone interrupted them.
Hargrove answered, his voice tender. "May, do you believe me now? … Good. When you come back, I’ll pick you up at the airport."
His friends cheered.
"Congratulations, Hargrove!"
"Don’t forget to invite us to the wedding!"
At that moment, Tia’s phone rang as well.
The laughter in the room stopped abruptly. Someone hesitated. "Did I just hear Tia Brown’s ringtone? Isn’t that Hargrove’s favorite song? It’s pretty unique."
"Is she here? Did she hear everything we said?"
"I’ll go check."
Tia quickly silenced her phone and, despite her weakness, slipped into the nearby stairwell.
The man peeked around the hallway and returned. "The corridor’s empty. Must’ve been our imagination."
In the darkness of the stairwell, Tia closed her eyes, letting her tears fall silently.
When her phone rang again, she answered it. "Joseph," she said softly.
On the other end, her brother’s voice was gentle. "Tia, are you sure you don’t want to come with me? Before Mom and Dad passed, they made me promise to take care of you. I can’t leave you alone here. I’m really worried about you."
Tia exhaled deeply, her voice barely above a whisper. "Joseph, I’ll go with you."
