Chapter 1

"Scott will be back on the 17th." "By then, you'll return to Oakshire with him to have the wedding." On the other line, William's voice was firm and left no room for negotiation. Silence stretched between them. Just as William thought his stubborn daughter would refuse again, Joel replied, "Okay." He was stunned and wanted to ask more, but Joel had already hung up. She glanced at her phone's calendar. Just ten days left until the 17th. In ten days, she would leave here and accept the marriage arranged by her family. Joel let out a self-mocking laugh, adjusted the gown she was wearing, and stepped into the banquet hall where the award ceremony was being held. As soon as she entered, Rosanne bumped into her. With an exaggerated gasp, Rosanne spilled her glass of red wine all over Joel's dress. Joel frowned and stepped back, but it was too late. The expensive gown was already stained. Rosanne widened her eyes like a startled deer, her expression innocent and confused. "Oh no! Joel, I didn’t mean to…" Joel took a deep breath and said calmly, "It’s fine. I’ll have the dress sent for cleaning. But this gown was borrowed from the company. If the stains can’t be removed, we might have to cover the cost." To Joel’s surprise, Rosanne’s eyes instantly turned red. She looked as if she’d just suffered some great grievance, trembling with a mix of agitation and distress. "Joel, it’s just a dress! Do you have to be so harsh? You know I can’t afford to pay for it!" Joel’s frown deepened. "I’m just trying to resolve the issue. Acting like this won’t work on me. I’m not Chris or Daniel." Rosanne’s gaze turned icy. Without a word, she grabbed another glass of red wine nearby and deliberately poured it down the front of her own dress. Her lips quivered as she fought back tears, making her look both stubborn and pitiful. "There. Now you can vent your anger, right? Are you satisfied now?" At that moment, Chris and Daniel walked in. Seeing the scene before them, their expressions changed instantly. They rushed over, their strides quick and purposeful, shoving Joel aside to shield Rosanne. Caught off guard, Joel stumbled and nearly fell. Chris looked at the disheveled Rosanne, his face full of concern. His voice was cold as he questioned Joel, "Are you out of your mind? Bullying Rosanne in public like this? Do you even know how much she loves that dress?" Daniel, always the calmer one, didn’t scold her outright, but his disapproving gaze was unmistakable. "Joel, Rosanne cares about you so much, and this is how you treat her? Since when did you become so harsh and unreasonable?" Protected by the two men, Rosanne’s eyes flashed with a hint of triumph. But she didn’t stop there. Instead, she began sobbing and ran out of the hall. Chris immediately panicked, turning to chase after her. His expression was one of rare urgency. Daniel stayed behind, staring at Joel for a long moment before letting out a heavy sigh. "Joel, we’re really disappointed in you." Joel stood frozen, dazed. She had never imagined that one day, Daniel would say something like that to her.
