However, Eileen couldn't bring herself to expose Marty, so she simply nodded and smiled. "Yes, Marty has a lot of potential."
"Exactly! I knew my son would make something of himself!" Candice laughed proudly.
Eileen was left speechless. She couldn't tell if Candice truly believed in her son or if she was just trying to save some pride.
The three of them went to another restaurant for dinner, naturally at Eileen's expense. During the meal, Eileen even served Candice, playing the role of a dutiful future daughter-in-law.
Marty was moved. Although Eileen was only going through with this marriage for appearances, her dedication warmed his heart. She was such an incredible woman—it would be a shame if this fake marriage didn't become real.
After dinner, Marty dropped his mother off at the clinic and then drove Eileen home.
On the way, Marty spoke up. "My mom was really happy today. Thank you." His tone was more serious than usual.
Eileen was momentarily taken aback. Maybe he wasn't so bad after all—at least he was a filial son.
"No need to thank me. By the way, I haven't met your dad. What does he do?" Eileen asked.
A shadow passed over Marty's face. He shook his head. "I've never met him, and I have no idea where he is."
Marty had been raised by his mother alone. Though he had asked about his father, his mother always evaded the topic or scolded him for asking.
But during his time abroad as a mercenary, Marty had uncovered some clues about his father. That was why he had returned to River Chamber City—to find out the truth.
"I'm sorry," Eileen said softly, deciding not to press further.
As they arrived at the Letherdale estate, Marty got out of the car with her and followed her toward the villa.
Eileen frowned and turned back. "Why are you following me?"
"Well, we're supposed to be a couple now, right? Won't I eventually live here too?" Marty grinned mischievously.
Eileen nearly fainted. This pervert! He couldn't even wait until they were officially together before trying to move in? How could someone be this shameless?
"Who said you're living here?!" Eileen snapped. "Go home! Be here by 7:30 tomorrow morning to pick me up for work."
She tossed him her car keys, signaling he could take her Maserati back.
"As you wish, my dear wife!" Marty replied gleefully before driving off in the Maserati.
"Hmph," Eileen muttered, turning toward the villa.
As soon as she stepped inside, she heard arguing from upstairs.
"Paddy, you idiot! Our daughter is being foolish, and you're no better! Letting her marry a driver? Have you lost your mind?!" It was her mother, Melanie, scolding her father.
Paddy responded, "What other choice do we have?"
"Hmph! It's because you're too weak! If you were competent, you could have handled this situation!" Melanie retorted angrily.
"Enough!" Paddy finally snapped.
Eileen hurried upstairs. "Mom, don't blame Dad. This was my decision."
Melanie scowled. "I don't care! I won't allow it. Tomorrow, I'm going to tell that driver to stay away from you!"
With that, she stormed into her room, slamming the door behind her. "And Paddy! Don't even think about coming to bed tonight!"
Meanwhile, at around 6 p.m., Marty returned to the clinic where his mother worked. Instead of going inside, though, he drove Eileen's Maserati slowly around the neighborhood—three times.
Why? Because he wanted to show off to the neighbors.
"Isn't that Dr. Dove's kid? He's driving a luxury car now?"
"He's been gone for years. Did he hit the jackpot or something?"
"Hmph! Acting like he's made it. What's he so smug about?"
The neighbors watched, a mix of envy, jealousy, and disdain in their eyes, as Marty cruised around in the luxury car. Inside, Marty couldn't have been more pleased.
The next day was Tuesday, and just five days remained until Marty and Eileen's wedding.
Eileen's father, Paddy, had already begun sending out wedding invitations to the city's elite families.
The news quickly spread through the upper echelons:
The most beautiful woman in business, Eileen, was getting married.
"My goddess is getting married? No!"
"To whom? Who's the lucky guy stealing my goddess? I'll kill him!"
"I heard it's someone from her company... a driver?"
"What? A driver?"
"A lowly driver is marrying Eileen? Where's the justice in that?"
"Is it too late for me to get my driver's license now?"
All the wealthy young men in the city felt as though they had been collectively dumped.
Meanwhile, in a luxurious estate, Darrell Santee, the head of the Santee family, sat with a grim expression.
"Old Letherdale promised to hand Allure Group over to us, but now they're marrying Eileen off to someone else? Are they trying to resist us to the end?" Darrell said darkly.
His son, Gregory Santee, replied, "This has to be Paddy's doing. He thinks marrying off his daughter will protect them from us."
"When I push them into a corner, let's see how they plan to escape," Darrell sneered. "Gregory, go to Allure Group this afternoon when they're off work and propose to Eileen publicly!"
Gregory immediately caught on to his father's plan. Darrell wanted to make his pursuit of Eileen a public affair, forcing the Letherdale family into a difficult position.
If they rejected Gregory, it would be a direct insult to the Santee family.
But if they accepted, the Santee family would still get what they wanted, whether through marriage or submission.
Gregory's lips curled into a cruel smile. "Brilliant! And since her fiancé is just a driver, I'll teach him a lesson while I'm at it."
Word of Eileen's upcoming marriage to a driver had already made its way through the city's upper circles. The employees at Allure Group were also talking about it, though they still didn't know which driver was marrying her.
Most of them suspected it was Marty, especially since he had just been promoted to Eileen's personal driver the day before.
The employees who were already envious of Marty were now seething with jealousy.
At the end of the workday, traffic at the entrance to Allure Group suddenly came to a standstill.
Twenty brand-new Audi cars were lined up in two neat rows outside the entrance.
In the center of the display was a sleek Ferrari, and a massive heart-shaped arrangement of roses was laid out at the front door.
In the middle of the heart, rose petals spelled out: "Gregory loves Eileen!"
Gregory Santee stepped out of the Ferrari and stood proudly in front of the roses.
As his father had instructed, Gregory had come to Allure Group during off hours to declare his love for Eileen publicly.
He wanted to make such a grand gesture that the entire city would be buzzing about his proposal, leaving the Letherdale family no way out.
