"Did you finish washing the clothes? Is dinner ready? All you do is stay at home. I really don't get it—how did you marry into my family?"
Kayden Shaw remained silent, hearing his mother-in-law, Sara Sidle's sharp and bitter voice.
He had married into the Jenkins family, becoming the live-in son-in-law of the top beauty CEO of Ninos. The wedding was a sensation that shook half of Ninos. No one could fathom why Ximena Jenkins, an absolutely wealthy beauty, would marry a penniless man from a modest background who couldn't even afford the wedding.
Not a single member of the Jenkins family attended the wedding day. Instead, Sara brought a crowd of relatives who berated him the entire time. Even after the marriage, she never saw him in a positive light, ordering him around daily.
To her, her daughter could have married a rich man, elevating the family's living conditions, instead of facing the current situation where Kayden couldn't even help Ximena out when her company was in financial trouble.
"Mom, I'm serious about Ximena. She's starting to like me, too," Kayden replied. On their wedding night, Ximena had made it clear to him that she didn't need a wealthy man but someone who could take care of everything at home.
Besides, she didn't plan on marrying and having children with him because she felt nothing for a stranger. At that time, Ximena had earnestly said, "I'll give you a chance to win me over. When you succeed, I'll give you the company, cook for you, and care for the kids at home."
Kayden had worked hard and diligently for the Jenkins family for three years for that promise. However, a man who spent his days idling at home, doing household chores, would naturally be looked down upon.
No sooner had he finished speaking than Sara exploded. She jabbed her finger at his face and scolded, "Serious? You're unworthy of my daughter, okay? Fine, Ximena needs 30,000 dollars to tide over noq. If you can come up with it in three days, I won't meddle in your affairs. But if you can't, divorce her. This is my last straw!"
"So it's finally come to this?"
Kayden let out a deep sigh. Over the years, he had secretly been altering the documents Ximena brought home, which is why her company had thrived.
But recently, he noticed that Ximena was making some risky investments. Although he had mentioned it, she didn't take it seriously.
"30,000 dollars, is it?"
This was an unattainable sum for a man who had fallen so low that he had to marry into a family. But three years ago, such an amount was nothing more than pocket change for Kayden. As the top young CEO of Jaston, he had transformed 20 million dollars into 2 billion in just two years.
With such talent, the family elders had recommended him as the next head of the family. However, Kayden was not truly part of the Shaw family. His cousin falsely accused him of embezzling family funds, and after a series of well-prepared schemes, Kayden was expelled from the family.
Thinking about this, Kayden took out a bank card from his pocket. The 2 billion dollars that once proved his acumen was in it, but the card belonged to the family and was frozen due to financial disputes.
At that moment, his wife, Ximena, walked through the door.
Ximena had striking beauty and a face reminiscent of a Hollywood star. At just 24, she was already a renowned CEO.
Kayden was upset to see her exhausted face. When he was wandering the streets, it was Ximena who had saved him, giving him food and warmth. When he asked her why, she said, "You remind me of someone I once admired, though I don't know his name."
For this reason, Ximena chose Kayden as her husband to take care of the household while she pursued her career. Over three years of living together, Kayden had grown fond of this hardworking woman.
"Ximena, did you sort out the funding issue?"
"Don't worry, Mom. I'll figure something out. Haven't we always managed before? This time will be no different."
Ximena recalled the times her company faced crises, and each time, there seemed to be a mysterious force helping her.
"If it doesn't work out, you should really consider divorcing this bum. I see Mr. Lyson is quite interested in you. With his wealth, helping you would be a breeze!"
Ximena frowned. Her mother's disdain for Kayden stemmed largely from Ximena's desire for him to take good care of the home. Because of this, Kayden endured much ridicule behind the scenes, being mocked as a worthless freeloader.
But Ximena always felt Kayden was talented. His casual remarks often inspired her when she faced difficult decisions at work.
"Mom, I won't divorce him."
"Ximena, I'm not saying this to be harsh. I know you're kind-hearted and don't want to hurt anyone, but this is your lifelong happiness. Marrying him has brought us so much ridicule! I don't care—whoever can solve this 30,000-dollar issue for you, I'll marry you off to them!"
Kayden could see the seriousness in Sara's eyes and the gravity of the situation on Ximena's face. After all, if Ximena had any other options, she wouldn't have brought it up.
He stepped forward with a solemn resolve, "I'll find a way to get the money."
"You think you can come up with the amount? Do you think it's 30 dollars?" Sara fumed. If this loser had money, he wouldn't have become a laughingstock, embarrassing her at gatherings!
Ximena also doubted, "Kayden, don't say things you can't back up." If he really had 30,000 dollars, he wouldn't have been homeless back then.
She hadn't seen him with a single friend in the past three years, so borrowing the money from someone else was entirely impossible.
"My friend called me recently, saying he's very wealthy. Just now, he invited me to dinner and offered to give me some money to start a business. I'll ask him to lend me some."
With that, Kayden left.
"Who knew this loser had wealthy friends?" Sara grumbled. "If he's lying, he better not set foot in this house again!"
Only Ximena saw through Kayden's intentions. After three years together, she knew him well. When he mentioned borrowing the money, his eyes were resolute, as if he was about to do something humiliating—expressions he never showed, not even when she took him to family gatherings where he was mocked.
"Is he really going to turn to someone he swore he'd never ask for help?" Ximena felt a twinge in her heart.
At that moment, Kayden was riding on an old electric bike he had bargained for in a second-hand market. As he rode to a deserted roadside, he clenched his teeth and dialed a number.
The call connected quickly.
"Are you going to ask for money?" A middle-aged voice sneered on the other end.
"Uncle Milo, I need 30,000 dollars."
"Why should I give money to an outsider like you?"
