Alice's heart trembled. Her gaze was complex, and for a moment, she was dazed.
"Let's go home."
Lorenzo pulled Alice along, turned around, and left. When he reached the hall entrance, he left behind a final sentence without looking back, "If you're unhappy about this, come at me. Anyone who dares to touch my wife and daughter will die!"
His voice was deafening.
The atmosphere in the hotel lobby was stifling. Lorenzo's outburst completely ruined the banquet. Sensing the situation turning unfavorable, the guests quickly took their leave.
In a moment, they were all gone.
Soon, only four people remained in the vast hotel lobby: Sullivan, Maxwell, Fred, and Grayson.
"Dad, this..."
Maxwell had a dark expression.
"Useless!"
Sullivan raised his dragon-headed cane and struck Maxwell several times, scolding as he hit him. "This is all your fault! This is the person you brought in! Inviting a wolf into the flock of sheep—bringing disaster upon ourselves!"
Sullivan was someone who valued dignity above all else. Now, his dignity had been completely trampled.
"Dad, don't worry."
Maxwell hurriedly said, "That brute is violent, which matches our investigation. However, I didn't expect him to be so savage. He's like a mad dog, biting whoever he sees."
"Alice bringing him home is like bringing home a time bomb. Once it explodes, the two women, one crippled, and one child will be doomed."
This was the outcome Maxwell wanted to see.
"He was protecting Alice just now. Didn't you notice?" Sullivan snarled.
"That was all an act."
Maxwell confidently replied, "Men like to show off in front of women—it's just a way to get them into bed. Dad, don't forget, he's a rapist. If Alice refuses him, do you think he can hold back?"
"That is true..."
Sullivan thought momentarily, then snorted, "As for the company, the contracts in Alice's hands are crucial. You must act fast and contact the clients—get those contracts signed."
"Understood!"
Maxwell was overjoyed.
Although Sullivan didn't say it outright, anyone with a brain could tell. By instructing them to contact Alice's clients, he was trying to strip her of power. Once she had no clients left, kicking her out of the Simpson Group—or even the Simpson family—would be just a matter of words.
Today's farce seemed to have deepened Sullivan's dislike for Alice and strengthened his resolve to drive her out of the company.
After Sullivan left, Fred sneered, "That brute got lucky. Alice's body and looks are among the top three in the whole city of Spring City. I would've wanted to sleep with her if she weren't my cousin."
"Me too."
With tear-streaked cheeks, Grayson spoke viciously, "When I grow up, I'll sleep with Daisy!"
"Shut up!"
Maxwell's face darkened, and he scolded angrily, "Useless things! Your grandfather is still alive! He values his reputation more than his life! Even if you have such thoughts, keep them to yourselves!"
The implication was clear—they could do as they pleased once Sullivan died.
Fred was delighted and eagerly said, "I've already prepared the contact information of those big clients. Time is of the essence. I'll call them now and discuss replacing Alice in signing the contracts."
"Smart kid."
Maxwell nodded approvingly.
Meanwhile, Lorenzo and Alice had already returned home.
It was a twenty-year-old apartment in Harmony Gardens. Back in the day, it was the marital home of Robert and Rebecca. It looked run down and was out of place compared to the newly built luxury residences nearby.
The apartment was a two-bedroom, one-living-room unit, only eighty square meters.
"Mister, this is my home."
As soon as they entered, Daisy grabbed Lorenzo's hand and dragged him, showing him around. "This is the kitchen, this is the bathroom, this is grandma and grandpa's room. And this is mommy's and my room. Those are the toys mommy bought for me."
Daisy was excited.
Alice watched, her heart in turmoil.
Lorenzo had stood up for her, even at the cost of offending the Simpson family. She was deeply touched. But being touched wasn't the same as having feelings. Should she accept her fate, give in, and become Lorenzo's wife?
To be honest, she was unwilling.
But what could she do? She would face the Simpson family's retaliation if she forced Lorenzo to leave. How could he withstand the wrath of the Simpson family?
She couldn't bear to let that happen.
Just as Alice felt torn and lost, a hushed voice came from the bedroom. "Mister, you won't bully my mommy and force me to call you daddy?"
"I won't." Lorenzo smiled.
"Then... will you sleep on the floor tonight?" Grandma told me, except for me, only my daddy can sleep with mommy."
"Alright."
"Then let's pinky promise."
Daisy beamed, "Pinky swear!"
Her voice was soft, barely audible. Yet when it reached Alice's ears, it touched her fragile part deep in her heart. Unknowingly, tears streamed down her face.
"Alice, why are you crying?"
Rebecca pushed Robert into the house just in time to see Alice in tears. Her face changed instantly, and her voice filled with shock and anger. "Did that brute bully you and Daisy?"
Just thinking about Lorenzo's criminal record sent chills down Rebecca's spine.
"No."
Alice wiped her tears and forced a smile. "He gets along well with Daisy. She doesn't seem to dislike him."
"That still won't do!"
Rebecca said worriedly, "No matter what, he is still a—"
She couldn't bring herself to say the word "rapist."
Rebecca had been anxious the entire journey home. Now that Lorenzo was engaged to Alice and living under the same roof, what if he used violence against her?
"Mom, he is my husband now. As long as he treats Daisy well, I'll be fine." Alice held back her tears, gritted her teeth, and seemed to make a decision.
"But..."
"I'll go cook."
Alice turned to leave, but at that moment, her phone suddenly rang.
"Alice, you must be home by now, right?"
The call was from Fred, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "A man and a woman, newlyweds, and your husband looks so strong and energetic. Don't tell me he isn't eager to do something with you?"
His tone was full of ridicule.
