"Mr. Zorn?"
When Jimmy saw the newcomer, he furrowed his brows. He followed the sound and saw a middle-aged man in uniform striding toward him with a grim face.
Jimmy didn't know him, but he was surprised to sense the man's considerable strength, already at the King of Soldiers level.
This strength might impress most people, but it was nothing to Jimmy, who could easily take down a War God. While in prison, the military invited Jimmy to train the Shanonville Guards, where even the weakest hit the King of Soldiers level, and some exceptional ones became War Gods. The ones he trained were now spread across the country, leading different regions.
Naturally, Jimmy didn't worry about someone nearing the King of Soldiers level. He was simply curious about the newcomer's attitude. Jimmy wouldn't hesitate to teach him a lesson if he were like Jeremiah.
"Mr. Zorn, you're finally here."
When Jeremiah saw the man, he quickly scrambled to his feet and greeted him with a bowed head. Just moments ago, Jimmy had intimidated him, but now, seeing the newcomer, he felt emboldened.
The newcomer was Dawson Zorn, and he wasn't just anybody. He was in a military special forces unit but retired due to injuries and became the deputy chief of the Larkhaven police department.
Dawson glanced at Jeremiah with disdain, then at his limp arm, recognizing a fracture immediately, thanks to his military years. He knew what kind of guy Jeremiah was, but beating up a patrol officer was serious business.
As the deputy chief, he couldn't ignore it and asked firmly, "What happened here?"
"Mr. Zorn, this kid just got out of prison and tried to take over someone else's house. I came to handle it and got injured instead," Jeremiah accused, pointing at Jimmy to get his side of the story out first.
Dawson wasn't easily fooled. He didn't buy Jeremiah's story and went up to Jimmy, asking, "Just got out of prison?"
Jimmy looked him over without showing any emotion and nodded.
"Officer, don't believe him! He's a fugitive. Arrest him and take him back. He should be executed!" Seeing the situation, Tina acted like a shrew, shouting. She wished Jimmy would just die already, clearing the way for her to make money.
Jimmy handed Dawson the release papers from Xenos Prison.
"Jimmy Yale?"
Dawson was surprised, recognizing the name. Jimmy's case was a big deal back then, and he'd heard some rumors. When he saw the papers were from Xenos Prison, his face changed, and he stared at Jimmy in disbelief.
Not everyone had heard of Xenos Prison, but Dawson knew it well. It was the scariest prison in Shanonville, out in the vast uninhabited Northwest, holding only the worst criminals and martial arts experts. They called it the Prison of Death, where no virus could escape.
Dawson's unit was once stationed at Xenos Prison, and for three years, he never saw anyone get out. Seeing Jimmy's release papers, he couldn't believe someone had actually survived and walked out.
Seeing Jeremiah's broken arm, he got it right away. This young man was no ordinary person. The prison had many experts, and even King of Soldiers level folks couldn't be sure they'd beat the inmates, let alone someone like Jeremiah.
He verified the release papers repeatedly, confirming their authenticity. Although he had retired nearly ten years ago, he was still very familiar with the special seals.
Since Jimmy was legally released, Dawson had no reason to arrest him. Moreover, he now held Jimmy in higher regard, no longer looking down on him as before.
Jeremiah noticed Dawson's hesitation as he repeatedly examined the papers, feeling anxious.
"Mr. Zorn, there's no need to look any further. This kid assaulted an officer. Just cuff him and take him to the station," Jeremiah insisted.
Already displeased with Jeremiah, Dawson was not about to be dictated to. His face turned cold. "Are you telling me how to do my job? Get lost."
Jeremiah was instantly speechless, trembling and not daring to speak further.
Jimmy, observing this, found his impression of Dawson improved. At least in terms of attitude, he didn't seem to be in cahoots with the likes of Jeremiah or Warner.
"Your documents are in order."
Dawson returned the release papers to Jimmy, then asked, "What exactly is happening here?"
Before Jimmy could speak, Tina rushed over, pouring out grievances, "Mr. Zorn, you need to get to the bottom of this. Not only is he trying to take our house, but he's also injured us."
Dawson listened and looked up at Jimmy, remaining cautious. The inmates of Xenos Prison were all notorious criminals, where causing harm, even murder, was not unheard of.
Jimmy sneered, "Tina, we've been neighbors for years. Since when did my house become yours?"
"Hmph, we have your mother's sales contract," Tina asserted confidently.
"What? Are you denying it now?"
"Honey, show Mr. Zorn the contract."
With Dawson present, Warner didn't dare act recklessly. Though he was a local thug, he wouldn't dare be insolent in front of a deputy chief. He quickly handed the contract to Dawson.
Dawson examined it closely and found nothing wrong. It bore Marilyn's signature and a bright red thumbprint.
He handed the contract to Jimmy and asked, "Is this your mother's thumbprint?"
Jimmy looked at it and instantly recognized the forgery. The signature wasn't his mother's. Marilyn had tutored him since childhood and was very familiar with her handwriting. Though the signature bore an eighty percent resemblance, he was sure it wasn't hers.
Jimmy tossed the contract aside and said sternly, "Warner, you really went far, forging a contract to seize my house."
"Hmph, just because you say it's forged doesn't make it so. It clearly has Marilyn's signature," Tina insisted, convinced.
With Jimmy's mother deceased, verifying the handwriting was impossible, which was Warner and Tina's confidence. The house would legally be theirs if they couldn't prove the contract was fake.
As they wore smug expressions of victory, Jimmy retrieved a letter from his worn backpack and handed it to Dawson. "This letter was written to me by my mother. You'll see the truth."
