"Man, what a downer. I just came out of the bathroom and saw this woman, dressed almost like a bar hostess. Seriously, she was pretty provocative." The chubby, middle-aged man plopped onto the sofa and gulped down a glass of liquor.
"She looked pretty young, so I figured she was new on the job. I gave her a slap on the butt and tried to ask her price, but she slapped me right back. Then her boyfriend came over and kicked me a couple times- said his name was Cedric Denford or something? Never heard of the guy."
"Cedric Denford? Isn't he from Queen Hall?" Amari chimed in from the side.
"Yeah, that's right. He also said he hangs out at Queen Hall and told me to wait for him, acting all tough like he's a big shot." Jonathan quickly added.
Adler frowned, glancing at Amari beside him. "What's going on? Do you know him?"
"Oh, it's nothing. He used to come by a lot. His dad runs a small factory over in the development zone, probably worth a few million at most." Amari elegantly crossed her legs, puffing on a lady's cigarette.
"Man, I thought he was somebody. A few million? That's nothing. Back in Jenton, I'd crush a guy like that in a minute." Jonathan's face trembled with anger, his cheeks jiggling. He owned coal mines in Jenton, with assets ten times those of Cedric's family. He had dozens of guards under his command, frequently clashing with other mine owners. It was rare for a fight not to result in injuries. Yet today, a mere youngster had the audacity to bully him.
He slammed his hand on the table and looked over at Adler. "Adler, what should I do about this?"
"Ha, even a little boss's kid from the development zone thinks he can start trouble in my place." Adler chuckled rather than getting angry.
The women on the surrounding sofas fell silent, knowing all too well the terrifying reputation of this man.
Adler ran both sides of the law, and he was the chairman of Aureon Entertainment. The guy had over a hundred men working for him.
He got a dozen places like Royal Entertainment all over Cadell City and owned pretty much every KTV, bar, and nightclub in town, not to mention all the other shady businesses.
One time, a director from the local Bureau of Industry and Commerce tried to mess with him and said he was going to investigate Adler's places. A few days later, that director got hauled off by people from the province.
Lately, he had been trying to go legit, focusing on the straight business. Jonathan landed a contract for a copper mine here in Cadell City and came to Adler for a partnership. Then this mess happened.
No wonder he's pissed.
"Jonathan, don't worry. You are a valued guest of mine, and I will ensure you are satisfied." He waved over a big guy with a mean look, a chunky gold chain, and a white tiger tattoo on his arm.
"Tigre, grab a couple of guys and go to Queen Hall. Bring Cedric and his friend over here. I want to see who those people are who dare to mess with me," Adler instructed casually.
"Alright, Adler," the tiger-tattooed man bowed and replied loudly.
Liam was about to head out when the door to the private room flew open and a bunch of tattooed guys in black suits barged in.
Tigre, the leader, shouted, "Which one of you is Cedric Denford?"
"I am. What's going on?" Cedric stood up, puzzled.
"Alright, you're coming with us. The boss wants to see you." With a wave of Tigre's hand, two men in black swiftly grabbed Cedric.
"Stop! What are you doing? Do you know who I am?" Cedric struggled desperately, and his friends started shouting.
"Hey, let's not get crazy," Brian said, stepping in and glaring at Tigre. "This could just be a misunderstanding. What do you guys want with Cedric?"
"He hit our boss's guest," Tigre said with a smirk.
"So that Jenton guy sent you." Cedric's expression changed.
"Hey, my dad's Franco Yare from Skycrest Hotel. We know the owner here, too. Why are you helping some out-of-towner from Jenton pick on us locals? That doesn't seem right," Brian said with a swagger.
"I don't care if you're Franco or whoever. If you're so tough, go talk to my boss." Tigre spat on the floor, looking down on them.
"Alright, let's go meet your boss. But let him go first, okay?" Brian didn't back down.
Tigre thought for a moment. The boss said to bring them over, but didn't specify how, so he nodded. "Alright, follow me and don't try anything funny, or else."
With that, he led the way out of the room.
"Brian, what should we do? Should we call our parents?" Cedric asked nervously.
"Don't worry, what connections could a Jenton guy possibly have here? Probably just a few small-time bosses and wannabe thugs. There's more of us anyway, nothing to be afraid of," Brian sneered.
His dad, Franco, owned one of the top five hotels in Cadell City and had connections everywhere, even in the New District.
A bunch of inebriated, clueless rich kids followed Brian enthusiastically behind Tigre and his men.
Liam watched as Marisa dragged Catherine over to join the crowd, and couldn't help but laugh to himself, "Let's see how you get out of this one."
When Brian and the others got to Emperor Hall and saw Adler surrounded by a bunch of big guys in black, they hesitated for a second. This local boss seemed tough, but since all their families had some clout, they didn't back down.
"Sir, what do you want with my buddy Cedric?" Brian asked arrogantly.
"Oh yeah? And who are you?" Adler asked, one arm around Amari and the other around a woman in a dress, eyeing the wannabe tough guys with a smirk.
"I'm Brian Yare. My dad's Franco Yare. He runs Skycrest Hotel. If we've done anything wrong, I hope you can cut us some slack." Brian gave a small nod.
"Franco Yare?" Adler snorted. "Even your dad would have to pour me a drink and greet me respectfully."
"And you are?" Brian's face changed slightly, as if realizing something.
"I'm Adler Showyer. You guys cause trouble in my place and don't even know who I am?" Adler smirked.
"Adler?" Everyone's faces changed instantly.
A chill ran down Cedric's spine.
They had just been discussing how formidable Adler was, never imagining they would provoke him.
Brian and his group appeared confident, but they were just second- or third-tier rich kids in Cadell City. Except for Brian, the highest-ranking official among their families was only a deputy district chief, not even in the New District. How could they possibly challenge such a powerful figure?
"Jonathan, the people are here. What do you want to do?" Adler tilted his head toward the chubby middle-aged man.
Jonathan rushed forward and kicked Cedric hard, knocking him to the ground, his face turning pale.
"Kid, weren't you acting tough? Let's see how I deal with you tonight," he sneered.
"No, no, please, sir, I'm sorry. I was wrong. Please let me go," Cedric begged, covering his head, his courage shattered.
"Let you go? Sure." Jonathan laughed. "Have your girlfriend keep me company tonight, and I'll spare you."
Cindy was already trembling in fear, shrinking back as he looked her way.
Amari chuckled. "Oh, if that's your preference, Jonathan, you should have said so. I could have found you a bunch of high school girls in no time."
Brian swallowed, glancing at his friends, seeing their fearful expressions, knowing he had to step up.
Hearing the name 'Adler Showyer,' he knew there was no easy way out today. Reluctantly, he said, "Adler, my friend wronged your guest. We'll apologize, whatever it takes. But let's not involve the girl."
"Alright, I've had a few meals with your dad, so I'll give him some face," Adler said with a half-smile.
Before he could finish, Brian's face lit up.
"You can leave. Just leave these two behind," Adler continued.
Brian and the others' faces changed dramatically.
If they bailed now and left Cedric and his girl behind, there'd be no way they could stay friends. People in their circle would call Brian a traitor.
"Why do we have to leave them? That's illegal. You can't just hold people like that," Marisa blurted out.
As soon as she spoke, Brian knew it was trouble.
His girlfriend was spoiled and had no clue how scary Adler really was.
