Liam thought, "Of course I understand."
The True Martial Immortal Sect was hailed as the foremost combat sect in the cultivation world.
From the most basic body tempering techniques to the sword arts of immortals, they covered everything and excelled at it all. As the number one expert of the True Martial Immortal Sect, what kind of fighting technique hadn't he seen?
The woman's boxing looked childish in his eyes. Even the True Martial Thirty-Six Strikes, the lowest-level disciples practiced, were countless times better than her moves.
The technique was just a basic brawling method for servants and unranked disciples, something real cultivators had long since left behind.
Liam didn't want to argue or reveal his identity as a cultivator, so he just apologized.
"I didn't understand. I was shaking my head about something else earlier. Sorry about that."
"If you don't understand, don't just shake your head," the woman insisted, but the old man interrupted, "Sophia, come back, he already apologized."
"Okay, Grandpa," Sophia replied, shooting Liam a sharp glare before returning to her grandfather.
Liam shook his head. Talk about trouble coming out of nowhere.
He looked at the old man again and noticed he also had stronger internal strength than Sophia's.
Regarding raw power, the old man was probably at Foundation Establishment Mid-Stage, which was higher than Liam's current level.
As for Sophia, she had just started, not even at Foundation Establishment yet.
Liam couldn't compare cultivators and martial artists.
Maybe the amount of power was similar, but the quality was worlds apart.
Once he figured this out, Liam lost interest and stopped watching Sophia's boxing.
Instead, he found a nearby willow, sat cross-legged, and started cultivating.
He quickly got into the zone, and as he ran the Astral Tempering Technique, the air around him seemed to go still.
Liam's actions caught the old man and Sophia's attention. Everyone else was there to exercise, not to sit under a tree and look like they were sleeping.
"Huh?"
After watching a bit, the old man suddenly made a surprised noise.
"What is it, Grandpa?" Sophia asked curiously.
"Take a good look at him. Do you notice anything different?" The old man's face grew serious.
"What?" Sophia frowned, scrutinizing Liam but seeing nothing different.
"Watch his breathing," the old man advised.
With that hint, Sophia noticed that Liam was breathing in a manner that caused his chest to rise and fall dramatically. Two faint streams of white air came out of his nose, curling and stretching like two little snakes.
"What the heck is that?" Sophia frowned.
"That's a super advanced internal training method. They say only some old-school martial arts masters can pull it off. You need crazy strong lungs. With one breath, you could stay underwater for ages," the old man explained.
"I never thought I'd see skills like this in my lifetime. It's unbelievable."
"Hmph!" Sophia snorted, unconvinced. "It's just heavy breathing, what's so impressive about it? Grandpa, you're overestimating him."
"You, my dear, are too unaware of the world's vastness," the old man shook his head lovingly. "It takes decades of practice to get to that level. I've only heard about it in stories and never seen it myself. Against you, he could probably take you out just by breathing."
"Is he that badass?" Sophia looked skeptical.
Suddenly, it clicked for her. "Wait, if he's that good, then when he shook his head at me earlier, it wasn't because he didn't understand martial arts. It was because he thought my boxing sucked?"
"Okay, Grandpa, you keep hyping him up. Let me go test him myself," Sophia said, suddenly fired up.
"Sigh..." The old man could only shake his head at his eager granddaughter.
Still, he wasn't going to stop her. Besides, it was just a friendly match.
They didn't wait long. About half an hour later, Liam let out a breath. A white streak shot out a few yards, even farther than yesterday.
"Indeed, a master," the old man's eyes narrowed.
"No big deal, we've got Zayn here. No matter how good he is, he's not faster than a bullet. These days, who in the martial arts world isn't afraid of guns?" Sophia thought, surprised but not scared.
Unlike her grandfather, she had been lauded since birth and, with her privileged background, had never encountered true martial experts.
The tough-looking guy, Zayn, noticed what was happening and walked over. He looked serious, one hand at his waist.
Liam wrapped up his cultivation and stood up, a bit dissatisfied.
This place was better for training than most, but it still couldn't compare to absorbing spiritual energy from medicine.
He turned around and, to his surprise, saw that Sophia and the old man were still there, watching him.
When he got up, the old man walked over, smiling, "I didn't realize you were a fellow martial artist. I'm Nikolai Webb. May I ask where you're from and who your mentor is?"
"Nikolai Webb?" That name rang a bell for Liam.
He didn't think much of it. After living five hundred years, he'd met too many people to remember every single one.
Judging by their actions, they probably misunderstood what happened during his cultivation.
Liam shook his head. "I'm not a martial artist. I guess you could call me a Taoist priest."
On Earth, the closest thing to cultivators were ancient Taoist priests and shamans.
"A Taoist priest?" the old man looked confused. Since when did Taoist priests learn martial arts?
"Grandpa, quit talking to him. Let me test him," Sophia said coldly, glaring at Liam.
"Earlier, when I asked why you shook your head, you said you didn't understand. Liar! If you're so great, come spar with me!"
"Is this a duel?"
Liam thought this was pretty amusing. After all these years, no one had dared challenge him, let alone a cute girl like Sophia.
"Should I humor her, or just let it go?"
However, bullying a young girl seemed beneath the dignity of the Immortal Venerable.
Facing Sophia, Liam shrugged. "I'm just a Taoist priest, and I know little about energy refining. I don't know about fighting or brawling. You're barking up the wrong tree."
"Hmph, you looked down on me while I was boxing, and now you're pretending you don't know anything? You think I'm stupid?" Sophia scoffed, not buying it.
"Young man, it's no big deal to spar a bit. My granddaughter might not yet be a martial arts expert, but our family's boxing style isn't bad. Why not give her some advice?" Nikolai encouraged.
Nikolai felt a bit doubtful. After all, when he said his name, Liam didn't even react, which was disappointing but also a relief.
He was used to people showing great respect upon hearing his name.
Liam sighed. Seeing Sophia already in her stance, face all serious, he knew he'd have to show her something.
He picked a leaf from the willow next to him, channeled his true essence into it, and flicked it with his finger.
Whoosh!
A shadow zipped by like lightning, brushing past Sophia's cheek and slamming into a willow tree over ten yards away with a loud thud, just like a bullet hitting wood. The tree shook hard, and leaves fell.
"Careful!"
Nikolai's face changed as soon as the shadow flew, but it was too late.
"What the..." Sophia froze.
Her right ponytail had been cut clean off, and her crystal earring hit the ground.
She touched her cheek and felt a bit of blood. When she turned around, she saw the willow leaf stuck deep in the tree, like a piece of metal.
"He can use a leaf as a weapon?"
Nikolai's heart throbbed, but seeing his granddaughter was okay, he finally breathed.
With a wry smile, he said, "I never thought I'd see skills like this in my lifetime, it's unbelievable. Even I wouldn't last a second against you, young man."
Then Nikolai bowed deeply. "We didn't realize we were in the presence of a Grandmaster. Sorry for our rudeness."
Nikolai's mind was blown. He thought he'd overestimated Liam, but Liam was a hidden martial arts Grandmaster.
Only Nikolai understood what Liam's move meant.
Being able to do something like that put him among the top grandmasters in the Martial World.
Sophia didn't care about her wound. She ran over, yanked the leaf out of the tree, and stared at Liam in shock.
"You used this flimsy leaf to cut my hair, my earring, and even stuck it into the tree. How is that even possible?"
Even Zayn, who was ready to pull a gun, was stunned.
He'd followed Nikolai for years but never seen anything like this.
With a guy like Liam, even a leaf or a card could kill someone fast before pulling out the gun.
It was terrifying. Zayn broke out in a cold sweat.
