Ian felt like he'd just heard the sweetest sound in the world. Overjoyed, he dashed toward where the voice was coming from. In no time, he reached the spot, but Yvonne was nowhere to be seen.
"Yvonne, where are you? Why can't I see you?" Ian called out, anxiety creeping into his voice.
"I'm... I'm right above you. Are you even human, or are you a ghost?" came Yvonne's slightly shaky voice from overhead.
Ian immediately looked up and spotted Yvonne standing up in a big tree.
"Yvonne, of course I'm human! You've always been so good to me. Even if I were a ghost, I'd never do anything to hurt you. Don't be scared," Ian said, his heart practically jumping for joy when he realized Yvonne was alive.
"Didn't you fall into the Demon Sealing Cave? How are you still alive?" Yvonne had seen Ian fall with her own eyes, so seeing him standing there in one piece left her both excited and in disbelief.
"It's a long story. I'll tell you all about it in a bit," Ian said, not even sure where to start.
"You're alive, that's all that matters. I really thought I'd never see you again!" Yvonne, who was usually so tough, suddenly broke down in tears.
After everything they'd both been through, now that they'd both made it out alive, Yvonne just couldn't hold it together. She sobbed uncontrollably.
"Yvonne, how'd you end up in a tree? Did that bastard do something to you?" Ian asked, suddenly getting a really bad feeling as he saw Yvonne crying.
"No... no! Right when things got bad, Elijah got bitten by a king cobra, so I took the chance and ran," Yvonne said, her voice still shaky from the memory.
Earlier, Elijah dragged Yvonne into the bushes. Just when she thought it was all over, a king cobra came out of nowhere and bit Elijah right on the leg.
Elijah freaked out after the snake bit him and started trying to save himself, which gave Yvonne the chance to make a run for it. She ran for her life, scared the snake might come after her or that Elijah might come after her again if he recovered. That was why she climbed up the tree and stayed put, barely even breathing.
Meanwhile, Elijah knew how dangerous the cobra's venom was. He tied a vine around his leg to slow the poison and tried to suck it out himself, but it was just too strong. He started to feel woozy and almost passed out, so he stumbled out of the bushes, trying to get down the mountain for help, only to bump into Ian. Thinking he'd seen a ghost, Elijah freaked out and took off down the mountain.
"That explains it. No wonder Elijah looked so pale and weak when I saw him," Ian said, relieved that Elijah hadn't done anything to Yvonne. Now he realized the bloody marks he'd seen were from Elijah trying to suck out the venom, not from Yvonne being hurt.
He'd jumped to conclusions for nothing.
Now it all made sense to Ian just how much danger Yvonne had been in, and how that cobra showing up had changed everything.
"Wait, you saw Elijah just now? He's not going to come back, is he?" Yvonne asked, her voice full of fear.
"No way. When he saw me, he freaked out just like you did. The man thought I was a ghost or something. He ran down the mountain like a maniac. If I'm right, he's probably not gonna make it."
"How do you know he's not going to make it?" Yvonne asked in surprise.
