"You're awake." A pleasant but emotionless woman's voice reached Idris's ears.
Melanie was Idris's legal wife. They had a marriage certificate, but never behaved like husband and wife.
Idris knew something was weighing on her mind, which had nothing to do with him.
As for why she chose to marry him, Idris was clueless.
He knew she treated him decently, unlike everyone else in the Barker family.
Melanie was beautiful, poised, and competent. She ran a private hospital. Idris often thought about how amazing it would be if she were his wife.
But in Melanie's eyes, Idris was a loser with no ambition. There was no way she'd ever see him differently.
Idris didn't push it.
She'd looked after him for the last three years, so he figured he'd spend the next three paying her back.
After that, they'd go their separate ways and forget about each other. Maybe that's what Melanie wanted, too.
Still, they were husband and wife, even if it was just on paper.
Faced with Melanie's poker face, Idris just nodded. "Yeah."
"The doctor said it's just a minor injury. You'll be fine after a couple of days' rest. I've already set your mother up at my friend Joey Hurst's place, so relax," Melanie said coolly. "You got lucky this time. Alexander's bodyguard used to fight in illegal boxing rings. Since you threw the first punch, even if he killed you, at most he'd be charged with excessive self-defense."
Idris just let out a bitter laugh. He didn't bother explaining. Three years as a live-in son-in-law had taught him one thing: to the strong, the weak's reasons were just a joke.
The louder the weak complained, the more pathetic they looked, and the more the strong looked down on them.
Alexander wanted to kill Idris. If Idris hadn't gotten lucky, he'd be dead already.
He was going to pay that back someday.
Suddenly, the Eight Mystic Diagram in Idris's mind stirred. A red flash passed through his eyes, and everything before him changed.
He saw a thick black mist above Melanie's head, with ghostly wails and howls echoing inside it.
"Ghost Curse!" The words popped into Idris's mind. He had never seen this kind of stuff before.
Melanie had been hit with a Ghost Curse.
Idris started to worry. "Melanie, have you gotten any gifts lately, like a doll or something?"
"No," Melanie answered coolly. "What's up?"
"You've been cursed with a Ghost Curse," Idris said anxiously. "Let me draw a talisman for you."
"Idris, I always thought you were a loser, but at least you were honest. When did you start pulling cheap stunts like this to get my attention?" Melanie never believed in ghosts, so hearing Idris's words made her roll her eyes.
"Get some rest. I've got things to do. I'm out."
