Melanie burst in with a crowd of doctors and nurses. The little girl's father staggered in after them, clutching his chest. "Is there any chance my daughter can be saved?"
Idris nodded. "Yes, as long as I can get a few acupuncture needles."
"Are you kidding? Her ECG is flat, and she's not breathing. How could you possibly save her?" the attending doctor snapped. "Who the hell are you? This isn't a place for outsiders to mess around."
Everyone knew Melanie had a live-in son-in-law, but no one recognized Idris since he had never shown up with Melanie.
Melanie also never told anyone Idris's identity. She just said coldly, "Idris, stop messing around. I can handle this. No need to play hero."
She didn't know what Idris could do, but who would believe a business major could bring someone back from the dead?
Melanie figured Idris was trying to prove himself after being pushed around by the Barker family, but his actions made people look down on him even more.
"Showing off?" Idris could guess what Melanie was thinking, and it made him furious.
"Even if I wanted to show off, I wouldn't joke about this! This girl can be saved, but you won't let me try. Isn't that the same as letting her die?"
"Idris? Isn't he the guy who married into the Barker family?"
"Shut up if you don't want to embarrass yourself."
Idris wasn't famous, but everyone knew his name.
As soon as Melanie said his name, the doctors and nurses nearby looked at him with contempt, some with pity, some with ridicule.
But since he was related to Melanie, nobody dared go too far.
"Mrs. Barker, this is nonsense!" the attending doctor snapped. "Mrs. Barker, no offense, but if he touches the body, I'm not taking any responsibility. It's all on him!"
"Like you could take responsibility! Weren't you just saying it wasn't your problem?" Idris shot back. "People call you a quack and say you don't care about lives, seems like they're right."
"Enough!" Melanie didn't believe Idris could pull this off. Any respect she'd had for his earlier heroics was gone. "I'm warning you. Leave now while I'm still being patient!"
Idris ignored Melanie and spoke to the little girl's father. "If you wait another three minutes, your daughter will be gone for good. Let me help. I'll stake my life on it if I can't save her. If you don't believe me, that's your call."
Only someone truly desperate knows how precious hope is. Hearing a chance, the man begged, "Please save her! My daughter is in a critical state. How much worse can it get? I'm begging you!"
"Get me some needles, now!" Idris shouted, startling the nurses.
Since when did Idris get so loud and forceful? It was weird, but nobody had time to think about it.
"We don't have a traditional medicine department, so there are no acupuncture needles here," Melanie said coolly. "I can't help you."
Idris looked around, then suddenly reached toward a nurse's chest. The nurse let out a scream, "Ahh!"
