"What the?! Who are you? Seriously, who the heck are you?!" Jonah Lyson was sound asleep when he suddenly felt his whole body tighten up.
He snapped his eyes open in fear and realized he was tied up tight. The man panicked and thrashed against the ropes, eyes wide as he stared at an old man with a baby face and white hair, dressed in rough linen clothes.
Then, his eyes darted around the misty Verdant Peak, looking confused. He was just sleeping, so how the heck did he end up tied up on a mountain?
"Hey there, kid, don't be scared!" The old man, who looked about seventy or eighty, stood with one hand on his hip and stroked his bushy white goatee, checking Jonah out with a big, satisfied grin. The more he looked, the more pleased he seemed, nodding and grinning. "Don't worry, you're just dreaming! Just relax, that way we can talk more easily."
Jonah glanced at some birds flying by and then at a pile of ants hauling food on the ground. He bit his tongue and felt pain, so he gave a nervous, awkward laugh. "Sir, are you sure you're not seeing things? Look at the blue sky, the white clouds, you can even smell the flowers- no way this is a dream! Stop messing with me. Can you tell me what mountain this is? Is it far from my house?"
"Hehe, kid, trying to pull one over on me? You're still too inexperienced!" The old man's face was rosy, and even at his age, his teeth were bright white, which made his smile kind of creepy. "Listen, where you are doesn't matter. What matters is… you're about to be my last disciple! How about that? Pretty lucky, huh? Hahaha."
"Your last disciple?" Jonah snorted, forcing a smile. "Come on, old man, quit messing around and let me go, okay?"
"Are you willing to accept my legacy and become my disciple?" The old man, Skyler Helwick, suddenly got serious and asked, "If you say yes, you'll be able to go home right away."
Jonah nodded quickly. "How do I accept?"
"You just have to say you're willing to accept my legacy," Skyler said, grinning at Jonah like he was a good student. "But just so you know, it's gonna hurt a bit, so you'll have to tough it out!"
"Hurt?!" Jonah blurted out, freaking out. "No way! I hate pain! I'm not doing it! Go find someone else, please, old man-just let me go, okay?"
"Look at you, you've got no guts! I don't know what the Celestial Law was thinking, making a legendary doctor like me end up with someone like you." Skyler shook his head in frustration, sighing and staring off into the distance. "If I could pick someone else, I would've done it already."
Before Jonah could get a word in, Skyler kept going, "I used medicine to pursue the path, planning to achieve the Golden Immortal Realm. But I had a mishap while practicing, so I had to break through by force and come out here to find someone to pass on my skills to before ascending. But then I ran into you, a total disappointment... I really..."
"Come on, that's enough!" Jonah looked at Skyler like he was crazy, then said, "If I'm so hopeless, scared of pain, and lazy, why don't you just forget about finding a successor and go ahead and ascend? Sound good?"
"Pfft, keep dreaming!" Skyler spat on the ground and grinned slyly. "No way am I letting my medical skills die with me! I've got ways to make you say yes. So think about it. Are you gonna agree on your own, or do I have to force you?"
Then Skyler gave Jonah a weird, suggestive look and even licked his lips.
"You..." Jonah shuddered and stammered, "What are you trying to do? You can't scare me into agreeing!"
"It really doesn't hurt that much, just feels like getting lightly punched a few times. Come on, be a good boy and just accept it!" Skyler rubbed his hands together and paced around Jonah, grinning from ear to ear. "Other people would kill for a chance like this. Just say yes, and once I've passed it on, I can finally ascend!"
"Really?" Jonah eyed Skyler suspiciously. "Once you're done, I can go home, right?"
"Absolutely!" Skyler patted his chest. "Look at me. Do I look like someone who'd trick a kid at my age?"
Jonah gulped and nodded. "Alright, I accept… ah!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Jonah felt a stabbing pain, like he was getting jumped by a whole gang. At the same time, Skyler disappeared.
"Ow… you old… scam artist!" Jonah yelled, gritting his teeth to bear the pain. Suddenly, he felt a blast of wind rush into his head, shooting through his whole body like a lightning bolt, making it feel like his bones were getting ripped out. The pain was so bad he blacked out on the spot.
