Chapter 10: Edwin Passed Out

On the monitor, the blue numbers showed that the heartbeat had gone up by ten, looking a lot better than before when it was really weak. The blood pressure numbers were up a bit, too, and other factors, such as breathing and oxygen levels, were also changing slightly. "Mmm..." Just then, the kid who hadn't moved at all suddenly waved his hands a little and reached for the oxygen mask. On the way over, Dawson had told Jonah that the kid could barely breathe and pretty much always had to wear an oxygen mask. So when Jonah saw the kid fighting off the mask, he happily jumped in to help him remove it. "Mommy! I want my mommy..." As soon as the mask came off, the kid squinted and looked around, crying weakly, "Mommy... mom... mommy..." Seeing this, Jonah finally felt certain that the energy he'd inherited could make a difference in people's health. He quickly stepped out, opened the door, and said with a smile, "Looks like the treatment's working!" Right then, the kid's weak cries came from inside, and everyone outside just froze, not sure if they'd really heard it. The kid had been in the hospital for almost two weeks, getting weaker every day. Except for when he threw up, he barely showed any signs of life, just slept all the time. But now, after Jonah treated him, it was like he'd come back to life. "Baby!" The kid's mom snapped out of it first and rushed in. "Mommy's here! Mommy's here!" "Son!" The dad ran in after her, tears running down his face. "Wait, they haven't even disinfected yet!" "This is unbelievable! How did he do that?" The doctors watching outside all started talking at once and hurried into the room. "Just keep taking care of the patient like you normally would," Jonah said with a smile. "I'll be back tomorrow to check on him." Then Jonah turned to the excited Dawson and grinned. "Mr. Moore, does this mean I passed the interview?" "It does! It does!" Dawson said, grabbing Jonah's hand like he was afraid he might run off. As they turned to go, Jonah suddenly spotted Edwin. Edwin, holding some medicine, saw Jonah walking with Dawson and immediately thought, "Uh-oh, this isn't good." His face turned pale, and he tried to sneak into a room, hoping nobody would notice. "Edwin!" Dawson called out, smiling. "You're one of the best young doctors we've got. Let me introduce you to Jonah Lyson. He's amazing. You guys should really get to know each other." "Uh, sure..." Edwin almost tripped over his own feet, nodded, and forced a smile. "I got it, Mr. Moore." Dawson, still beaming, couldn't help but add, "Tomorrow I'll officially introduce him to everyone at the hospital meeting." "What?!" Edwin saw stars and dropped to the floor with a thud. "Somebody help! Dr. Jauncy just passed out! Quick, get over here!" Jonah shouted. A few nurses rushed over and put the still-dazed Edwin onto a stretcher. Back in his office, Dawson poured Jonah a cup of his best tea and said quietly, "I've got to say, I never thought someone so young could be this good. I bet you've got even more tricks up your sleeve. So, tell me, how much do you want for your salary?" "Mr. Moore, I can tell you're a really good person. No wonder the hospital has had such a great reputation all these years with you in charge." Jonah sincerely smiled. "Just pay me whatever's fair." "That's great!" Dawson said, nodding. "We don't see many young people like you these days. The people of Herton City are lucky to have you!" Dawson then asked Jonah how he'd gotten so skilled. Jonah already had a story ready- he said he'd learned traditional medicine from a mysterious person when he was a kid, which is why he later went to med school. It all sounded pretty convincing, and Dawson just marveled at the number of talented people in Chiton. After chatting a bit longer, Jonah got up to leave. Outside the hospital, he hopped on his e-bike, stopped for a moment, and pulled out his phone to check WhatsApp. Daisy never expected Jonah to really pull this off. After exchanging a few sweet messages, they both returned to their previous activities. Jonah put his phone away, twisted the throttle, and sped off down the street. "Stop! Stop right there. Hey!" Just as Jonah took off, he nearly ran into a female cop in uniform. He glanced over and saw a guy in a baseball cap running off into the crowd. "What the hell are you doing?!" The cop's pretty but icy face looked even scarier under her hat. Jonah had blocked her way, so she watched the thief get away and kicked Jonah's bike, yelling, "Are you trying to interfere with police business? Are you working with that thief?" Jonah, who'd just been mentally rating how cute the cop was, nearly jumped out of his skin when she kicked his bike. He quickly shook his head and said, "Sorry, officer, I swear it wasn't on purpose! I don't know that thief. I hate thieves!" "Yeah, right!" She kicked the bike again, not caring about all the people watching, and pointed at Jonah, snapping, "Don't think I don't know you two are together. He got away, so you're coming with me to the station! Get off!" When he heard the cop tell him to get off and come to the station, Jonah thought, "Great, just my luck." But while she wasn't looking, he twisted the throttle and tried to make a run for it. "Trying to run, huh?" The cop reacted fast- she jumped and tackled Jonah right to the ground. With a loud crash, they both hit the ground, and the cop pinned Jonah down, holding his arms behind his back. Embarrassed and pissed off, Jonah yelled, "You crazy lady! Let me go! You broke my bike! I don't even know that thief!" "Oh yeah? If you don't know him, why'd you try to run? That's suspicious as hell," she said, pulling out her handcuffs. More and more people started watching, and Jonah felt like he'd never been so embarrassed in his life. He tried to struggle free. "Stay still, or I'll kick your ass!" the cop warned, giving him another kick. "Ow! Stop hitting me!" Jonah yelped, feeling totally humiliated; he couldn't believe this lady was actually stronger than he was! Damn, was she even a woman?!
