He rushed out in a hurry, then came back moments later, handing Jonah five stacks of cash, almost in tears of gratitude. "Thank you so much, doc! I've never seen anyone as skilled as you."
"You're welcome," Jonah replied, accepting the money and handing a prescription to Luciano. "Take this prescription to the pharmacy, get these herbs, simmer them over low heat, and drink the decoction. Take three doses and you'll be all set. Your symptoms down there will be gone within three days."
"Alright, alright!" Luciano carefully tucked the prescription away as if it were gold, took a few steps, then turned back, a bit embarrassed. "Uh, hey doc, mind if I get your number? Just in case I have friends who might need..."
"Sure, jot it down," Jonah said, not caring whether Luciano really wanted to refer friends or just didn't trust him. After giving his number and seeing the man off, Jonah happily returned to his room to pack up his silver needles, then counted the cash over and over again.
This was the first money he'd made since graduation, and it wasn't a small amount. For a moment, Jonah almost regretted not bowing a few more times to Skyler back then.
While counting, he glanced at the time and suddenly remembered he had to pick up his girlfriend, Daisy, from work that afternoon. Tucking the cash into his pocket, he rushed downstairs. Seeing his parents cooking, he told them everything was taken care of and that he wouldn't be home for dinner, then hopped on his e-bike and took off.
Jonah weaved through traffic and crowds, checking the time as he went. Twenty minutes later, he arrived at Herton Hospital, where Daisy worked. After parking, he was about to head to her office when he spotted a slender figure nearby.
From where Jonah stood, he could see how attractive she was: white blouse, chest out, denim shorts showing off her long legs. She was seriously stunning.
Jonah couldn't help but take a few more glances, realizing this girl looked just like his girlfriend. Quickening his pace, he approached.
She had fair skin, a cute face, and mesmerizing almond-shaped eyes, though her slightly furrowed brow hinted at displeasure.
As Jonah drew closer, he confirmed it was indeed Daisy, but the next moment, he immediately got pissed!
Some guy was shamelessly hitting on his girlfriend, blatantly checking out her chest!
Daisy looked annoyed, barely responding and glancing around, obviously wanting to get away.
Seeing her unfazed, Jonah breathed a sigh of relief, hurried over, and smiled. "Daisy! Sorry, I'm late; traffic was crazy. Did I keep you waiting?"
He apologized and reached out to help Daisy with her bag.
"So this is that unemployed boyfriend of yours?" Before Daisy could reply, the man, Edwin Jauncy, spoke first, eyeing Jonah with disdain. His voice dripped with sarcasm, "You're just some deadbeat living off your parents. How'd a guy like you land a girlfriend as gorgeous and sweet as Daisy?"
"Hey, Edwin, what's with the attitude?!" Daisy retorted, glaring at her hospital colleague. "I like him because he's honest and treats me well. Got a problem with that?"
"I'm just annoyed! The world is so unfair." Edwin sneered, unfazed. "If you were dating someone who actually had something going for him, fine. But this dude's got nothing but a half-decent face. I just can't stand it."
"Oh, like you're such a big shot." Jonah noticed Edwin still wearing his white coat, glanced at his ID badge, and smirked. "Edwin Jauncy, huh? Bold of you to try stealing my girl right in front of me. You're just a junior surgeon, acting all high and mighty. You think having a job suddenly makes you hot stuff?"
Edwin was stunned, staring at Jonah with wide eyes. He couldn't believe this pauper dared to look down on him.
Their argument started drawing a crowd. Seeing people staring, Edwin's face turned red with embarrassment and anger. "Herton Hospital is the largest in the city. You're not even qualified to set foot in here, so who are you to talk to me like that? Sure, I can't do surgeries yet, but at least I'm a real doctor, not like some people who can't even get hired!"
"That's only because I don't feel like looking for a job yet." Jonah grinned, ready to leave with Daisy.
But Edwin called after him. "Can't find one, more like. Stop making excuses! I heard you graduated from Herton Medical University. If you're so great, why don't you join us at Herton Hospital?" Edwin, now showing off in front of the crowd, added, "If you don't get in, don't blame me when I steal your girl. You've been warned!"
Jonah held back the furious Daisy and sneered, "If I can't get into Herton Hospital within three days, I'll call you grandpa."
