Edwin burst into laughter and retorted, "You? Don't make me laugh! Let me tell you, if you can get in within three days, I'll call you Grandpa at Monday's meeting and lick the soles of your shoes! Ha, you're like a toad trying to eat a swan... And you think you can get a job at the hospital? Keep dreaming!"
"Are you for real?" Jonah glanced around, asking, "This guy bet with me that I couldn't get a job at the hospital. If I do, he'll call me Grandpa and lick the soles of my shoes at the meeting. Can anyone here be a witness?"
"Yes, we are all hospital staff; we can vouch for you!"
"We just happened to be passing by. We'll be witnesses. Go ahead and place your bet!"
"I got it on video. If you back out now, you're just messing with us!"
The crowd grew, and as Jonah asked around, people started chiming in, turning the whole scene into a spectacle.
"Alright! Thanks for being my witnesses. Bet's on! It's ridiculous how this random single guy who can't even get a girlfriend tried to steal mine?" Jonah said, pulling Daisy out of the crowd.
Edwin's face turned awkward as he raged, "Kid, get ready to call me Grandpa in three days!"
*****
"Jonah, how could you bet with him?" Daisy wrapped her arms around Jonah's waist, clearly worried as they got onto the e-bike. "How can you possibly get into the the hospital in three days? Guys like him aren't worth your time."
"Don't worry, I've got my plans and considerations." Jonah waved a confident hand, smiling. "Let's go, I made a little money today. Let's go celebrate! Order whatever you want! Let's not worry about anything else tonight."
"Really?" Daisy's eyes lit up, and she giggled, planting a kiss on Jonah's neck.
The two of them headed to Larky Plaza, the biggest mall in town, and had a big meal at a fancy Jastonian spot.
As they left, Daisy let out a small, satisfied burp, feeling totally stuffed. She blushed and leaned on Jonah's shoulder, asking with a smile, "We just blew a couple hundred on dinner... Jonah, be honest, how'd you get that kind of money without a real job?"
Since they started dating, Jonah hadn't really spent much on her, never taken her out for a nice meal, or bought her anything.
Seeing Daisy so happy, Jonah felt elated too. He ruffled her hair and grinned. "Why do you care? As long as it's not dirty money. Come on, let's get you some nice new clothes!"
"I..." Daisy glanced nervously at the fancy designer store in front of them, trying to back out. "It's too expensive... let's not."
"What are you afraid of? It's not like we're broke!" Jonah just laughed and tugged Daisy inside.
"Welcome..." Two salesgirls exchanged a look when they saw how simply Jonah and Daisy were dressed.
One tall, stylish-looking clerk forced a fake smile and asked, "Can I help you find anything today?"
Jonah was immediately displeased, giving the clerk a once-over. "Why else would we come in here if not to shop?"
"I didn't mean it like that..." The snobby clerk gave an awkward smile, pointing to a rack of clothes. "These are our brand's latest summer collection, and I think this one..."
"We'll look around on our own, thanks." Jonah waved her off impatiently, noticing Daisy's discomfort. "I don't like being hovered over when I shop. Just ring us up when we're ready."
"Alright... sure." The clerk stepped back, looking a little annoyed, but didn't go back to the counter.
"How about this one?" Daisy held up a brown summer dress, batting her big eyes at Jonah.
He glanced over, delighted, "It looks great on you already, and you haven't even tried it on yet! Go try it!"
"Well..." Just as they were about to head to the fitting rooms, the clerk stopped them, a little apologetic. "Sir, this summer dress is our newest arrival; it was just on the runway at Paris Fashion Week last week. Your girlfriend is tall and has a great figure, and she'll look amazing in it. But... it's a bit pricey: $4188."
"Oh my god." Daisy blushed, like she'd touched a hot stove, and quickly put it back.
Jonah frowned, giving the clerk a once-over. "What's your problem? Think we can't afford it just because of how we're dressed? Back off."
With that, Jonah grabbed the dress, pulled Daisy toward the fitting room, and on the way, quickly picked out a couple more outfits that caught his eye.
